Baldur’s Gate 3 gets a whole new mission in the ambitious Spelljammer mod

Baldur’s Gate 3 has a whole new mission thanks to an ambitious modder. BG3 mods (now available on all platforms) have already taken the impossibly expansive game and made it even bigger. Larian’s initial claims maintained that mods would not support story content and would largely be relegated to things like new classes, character traits, and cosmetic options. However, modders have apparently found a way, as new story mods have appeared on Nexus and the official mod manager over the past few days.

One of these mods is “DnD Spelljammer Features,” submitted to Nexus Mods by bibsanwhich adds a variety of features Dungeons and Dragons‘Spelljammer configuration. However, this doesn’t just happen by adding new items, backgrounds, and enemies to the game; also includes an all-new mission for players to tackle in Act 3. The mission involves purchasing the title to a Space Galleon from Popper at the Circus of the Last Days. It then transports Tav and his party to the Astral Sea, which they can explore a small slice of before returning to the main quest.

It is admittedly a very brief quest, but it is also enormous in its scope and implications for BG3 tradition. Furthermore, it is indicative of a larger trend within the modding scene, and may point to some revolutionary developments for the future BG3 fashion.

Character characteristics, spells, enemies and more

Antimagic can disable a D&D spell-blocking ship.

The Spelljammer mod starts at character creation, when players can select one of two new backgrounds: Astral Drifter, which grants permanent advantage on Wisdom saving throws, and Wildspacer, which grants the character an extra hit point for each level they gain. It also adds new spells such as air bubble and Elmo Spelljamming Attunementboth learnable by craftsmen and fully integrated with KiderionLykonmod to add this class to the game.

Throughout the game, players can get new itemslike a parchment Summon Giant Space Hamstera gythka polearm and several pieces of Talarith armor. There’s also a special set of Spelljammer-themed custom dice, which come in light blue and glow softly like the stars of the Astral Sea.

Later, during the Spelljammer-themed mission, players will have access to their Space Galleon and a small new map. In it, they’ll fight a handful of new Astral Plane-themed enemies, such as Space Hamsters, Eye Mongers, and Githyanki pirates. But perhaps most interesting, the Space Galleon can be upgraded during and even after the missionand can later be summoned to help the group in battles in the main game. Players can set work orders to add ballistae and cannons to their ships, then call in airstrikes on the city of Baldur’s Gate.

Screen Rant’s take: Bodes well for BG3 mods

In a word, the Spelljammer mod is amazing and demonstrates almost infinite potential for the future Baldur’s Gate 3 fashion. Apparently, story content is now up for grabs, and while this particular mod is quite short and sweet, that probably won’t always be the case. Others are already working on similar (if not more) expansive mods, such as Lotrich3 on Reddit, which is developing an extra section of the Underdark for players to explore between Acts 2 and 3.

It’s only been a few months since modding tools became publicly available. Over time, players could create entirely new campaigns to Baldur’s Gate 3in massive and total conversion mods that introduce new characters, new scenarios, new conflicts, etc. Think big, like what Enderal did for Skyrim: Players can bring entire customization D&D campaigns for Baldur’s Gate 3 in a short time.
