The race to take Marty McFly back to 1985 is frantic, so it's easy to overlook how Back to the futurethe math doesn't add up. As Back to the future Coming to the end, Marty and Doc Brown race to get the DeLorean to speed toward the Hill Valley clock tower in time for the fateful lightning strike that will send Marty back to the future. Despite their meticulous planning, everything that could go wrong does go wrong, from Doc's cables getting tangled to the DeLorean's engine failing.
Amid the chaos, Marty is also worried about his friend's imminent death. Doc Brown will be shot in 1985, but Doc Brown will Back to the futureThe 1955 timeline refuses to allow Marty to warn him of upcoming events. Out of options, Marty decides to recalibrate the DeLorean's control panel. Instead of returning it to the exact moment Back to the futureWith the iconic car from 1985, Marty will arrive with enough time to warn Doc about the angry, machine gun-toting Libyans heading their way. It is during this process that Back to the futureThe main character makes a small, but still amusing, continuity error.
Marty sets the wrong time in the DeLorean during Back to the Future Finale
Never let Marty McFly operate a microwave
Just as Marty decides his plan to save Doc Brown by arriving earlier in the future, he mutters "10 minutes I must do this" and grabs the control panel. Michael J. Fox's bouncing hero then changes fate from November 5, 1985, 1:35 am, to November 5, 1985, 1:24 am. Despite saying "10 minutes", Marty actually sends himself back 11 minutes early.
It can be assumed that Marty is simply wrapping up this scene. Many people asked for the time at 1:49 would respond with "10 minutes for two," and Marty may be doing something similar here. Looking closer, however, this explanation doesn't hold up. The line "10 minutes I must do this" suggests Marty is just estimating how long he needs to get to the mall parking lot and warn Doc Brown - pulling a vague figure out of thin air because he can't be sure how long this will actually take.
If Marty intentionally schedules 11 minutes to Back to the futureThe DeLorean's - a very specific number - suggests that he calculate exactly how much time it will take by figuring out the distance between the clock tower and the mall, how fast the DeLorean can go, what time the Libyans arrive, and what traffic he you can find. Obviously, Marty doesn't go into that much detail, which means he intends to give himself 10 minutes, but strangely sets it to 11.
Marty's assumption was wrong, regardless of the time error in Back to the Future
Marty didn't take into account the DeLorean's unreliability
The one-minute difference turns out to be a moot point, as Marty's estimate is based on the assumption that the DeLorean will still function after reaching 1985. This does not happen, and Marty is forced to run, arriving at the Lone Pine Mall just fine. time to watch Doc Brown get shot. If the scientist hadn't broken Back to the futureAccording to the rules of time travel, upon reading the letter Marty wrote about the future, his death would have been permanent.
It's interesting that, despite the DeLorean breaking down and forcing the driver to run from the clock tower to the mall, Marty only arrives at the parking lot a few seconds late. This further suggests that 10 minutes, with a working car, would have given Marty more than enough time to save Doc Brown. The argument that Marty deliberately set the DeLorean's control panel to 11 minutes therefore becomes even more unlikely. A minute wouldn't make a difference if the car was running.
The only explanation for Back to the futureThe 11-minute joke is that Marty gets numbers wrong on the keypad and doesn't have time to correct himself before he starts climbing to 88 mph. Either that, or he spent too many math classes passing notes to Jennifer.
Marty McFly, a 17-year-old high school student, is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his close friend, maverick scientist Doc Brown. In 1955, he met his parents when they were his age and must intervene to ensure they stay together before returning to 1985.
