Sunny is originally from Bangladesh but lives in Durham with his father where he helps run his father's business. Sunny, 25, met Veah, 27, from Florida, on a dating app a year before filming began. Veah flew to meet Sunny in South Africa, but brought along her ex-boyfriend turned best friend, Rory. Rory's presence upset Sunny, but there was something else threatening to end their relationship.

Veah complained to Rory that Sunny was hiding her from her family. He didn't take her to meet them, even though he was serious about having a future with her. Sunny claimed that his family knew about Veah, but he had never taken a girl to meet his family. Veah was sure that Sunny thought her family I would never accept her because of her tattoos. However, it was more than just the tattoos. Both Sunny and her family also wanted Sunny to marry a Muslim woman. Someone who was submissive and followed their religion and traditions.

Sunny took Veah to the Drakensberg to celebrate her one year anniversary. They met his father and the meeting did not go well, with Sunny's father commenting on his religion and tattoos. However, the conversation made Sunny more determined to have a Muslim wife, even though his actions suggested otherwise. Sunny was having premarital sex with Veah and consuming alcohol, partying, etc. He didn't mind Veah filming intimate scenes with him while wearing lingerie. Sunny told Veah: “You know I'm Muslim. So if we are together, you have to change your religion. You have to.”

It remains to be seen whether Sunny's father gives in to his son's happiness and accepts Veah as she is.
