Apple TV+ is planning to temporarily change its streaming model to Charlie Brown. Apple TV+ launched in November 2019 and has since featured numerous movies and TV shows. Its production company, Apple Originals, is behind several popular series, including Termination, Ted Lasso, Siloand For all humanity. Normally, Apple TV+ movies and TV shows are on the platform via streaming and available only to subscribers. A Charlie Brown Christmas is currently available to all subscribers.
Now, Litter will be temporarily changing its model to the Charlie Brown specials this holiday season and will take place this weekend. On Saturday, December 14th and Sunday, December 15th, A Charlie Brown Christmas will be available to stream for free to anyone, regardless of subscription status. This means that non-subscribers will be able to access A Charlie brown christmas for a limited window.
What this means for Apple TV+
They did this with other Charlie Brown specials
This weekend of Charlie Brown This isn't the first time Apple TV+ has made room for non-subscribers for a short period. This fall, they announced limited free viewing windows for both It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. The classic Big pumpkin special was made available in the pre-Halloween viewing window of Saturday, October 19th and Sunday, October 20th, and A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving can be seen by everyone on Saturday, November 23rd, and Sunday, November 24th.
Now, Apple TV+'s likely hope with this model is to attract more people to Apple TV+ during these windows. Although non-subscribers cannot access other content, using the service for Charlie Brown Special promotions can get them to see what else is on the service. Some people will simply enjoy the free content while they get it, but others may be asked to subscribe. After the fall of free Peanuts special events, it will be interesting to see how the Apple TV+ subscriber base grows, if at all.
Our Take on Apple TV+'s Charlie Brown Model
This could help with your next original show
I think this is a creative move on Apple TV+'s part as it is something that few streaming services are adopting such a tactic for their users. This is an especially strategic move for Apple TV+ ahead of the Termination season 2 premiere. The Emmy-nominated series' sophomore effort debuts on Friday, January 17, so now will be an ideal time for the streamer to gain significant traction. It appears that the temporary free model is only for Charlie Brownbut it will be interesting to see if Apple TV+ applies this strategy again.
