Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy's friendship fueled the canyon in more ways than one
“[We Have] We have loved each other for a long time”
ScreenRant: Whether it was a person, part of the script or something else, what made you most excited about saying yes to starring in The Gorge?
Anya Taylor-Joy: [What got me the] The most exciting thing, I must say, is working with this one. Miles and I have known each other for a long time, we've loved each other for a long time, and I'm a big fan of your acting, so I wanted to work with you.
Miles Teller: I can repeat that, for sure. I think Anya is a phenomenal actress, and we've known each other before this, and I've never had that experience before where I already felt like I had a bond with someone coming into a story. And then in terms of the script, I just thought it was highly original. Nobody has ever seen anything like this. I had never read anything like this and I thought it would be really fun, and I knew we were going to show a lot of different skills, and there are a lot of different genres in this thing.
This is a story about people with a literal gulf between them who are forming a bond. Since you had this bond in real life beforehand, is this something you found very easy or did you have to try to stay separate at first to build this relationship dynamic?
Anya Taylor-Joy: No, no, we did, in the beginning… We had all the best intentions that we really wanted to be there for each other and have each other's back. And then the first day I showed up and Miles was in his tower and they put me on a pulley and I thought, “This is just not going to work.” [work]we can't see each other.” But yeah, I think having that relationship was invaluable because you have shorthand and you can understand the way the other person moves, and that helps in every way. With weapons, even in the moment when that we were both fighting together, there was an awareness of each other that was really fun and really helpful, honestly.
Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller spent a lot of time in the canyon's real-life towers
“[My Tower] It was a fun tower”
So you're talking about being on a pulley and not a tower. What's actually in the room with you when you're filming in the towers overlooking the canyon? What was that like on set?
Anya Taylor-Joy: The towers are real. They're not as tall as they are in real life, but the towers are totally real. The difference is that we could visit each other's towers whenever we wanted. Miles spent a lot of time in my tower because it was the fun tower. We had music and flowers, I had a piano, I was killing it.
Miles Teller: It must be nice to live high here, I have nothing. [Chuckles]
Anya Taylor-Joy: [Laughs] But yeah, I will say the beauty of this particular movie is because we shot so much of it on location, there's that kind of feeling of, “Ugh, are we going to miss something when something is done on a sound stage?” ?” And support for departments, it seemed incredible.
Anya Taylor-Joy was grateful that the gorge didn't use much green screen
“I struggle with color”
The realism should help you get into the right space rather than just having to play against a tennis ball.
Anya Taylor-Joy: 100%.
Miles box: [Anya,] Did you do that tennis ball thing?
Anya Taylor-Joy: Very, very briefly. I struggle with color, but color makes me nauseous.
Miles Teller: Oh right, I remember you saying that.
Anya Taylor-Joy: Yeah, if I walk into a room that's all green, I'm like, “[Pained groan].”
So there won't be any big, all-green movies in your future?
Anya Taylor-Joy: Ehh, I would have a hard time. [Chuckles]
Miles Teller: There's a scene, I think it was just released in Vanity Fair, where we're in this jeep being stopped, and I believe there's a green screen in the background there. But that said, we're still being pulled up in this Jeep.
Anya Taylor-Joy: Everything is in motion, yes.
Miles Teller: Everything is in motion.
Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller were excited about the film's Valentine's Day release
“I think people will have fun watching it”
The film will premiere on February 14th, which is Valentine's Day. What makes this movie good to watch on Valentine's Day?
Anya Taylor-Joy: I think there's something for everyone. I think whatever floats your boat, we'll probably have it in this movie. There are so many different genres and it's fun. I had a lot of fun making it and I think people will have fun watching it.
Miles Teller: Well, I also think it's good alternative programming to your typical love story, and they meet for the first time, and you're going to see them fall in love. But they have to go through some really fun, engaging, high-octane, hellish things to end each other, so that's cool.
