Summary
-
Each Pokemon is assigned a single type, or a combination of two types, which dictates their abilities, weaknesses and resistances.
-
Of 171 possible type combinations, only nine have never been used in the Pokemon Games.
-
Some unused type combinations would make a Pokemon exceptionally weak, while others are likely to be included in future games due to their relative weight and ease in designing a Pokemon.
The Pokemon Games are steadily getting more complex as each new generation emerges, but there are still a number of Pokemon type combinations that haven't been used yet, even until Scarlet and violets last Indigo Disc DLC. Pokemon types are categorizations that affect the abilities, strengths, and weaknesses of Pokemon in battle, ranging from basic elements to fantasy creature categorizations. Pokemon started With 15 types, but there are now 18 total as of generation 9, not counting the stellar type unique to terrestrialized pokemon, nor the defunct ??? Type. 171 unique Pokemon type combinations are possible, and Only nine type combos remain unused.
While many types of Pokemon reflect the creatures' origins, physiology, or way of battling, other types may be assigned to address game balance needs. Some early-generation Pokemon, for example, received the Fairy type, added to resist Dragon. In some cases, like Togepi's, Fairy took the place of the old type, while other Pokemon, like Mr. Mime, received Fairy in addition to their original type. Despite the roughly 1,000 total Pokemon that roam the regions of Paldea, Galar, and the rest, there are still some Pokemon type combinations that remain unused. Some combinations would make a Pokemon extremely weak, and other type combinations wouldn't make sense in the established universe of games.

Which unused Pokemon type combinations may still appear
Each new game offers the possibility to finish an unused type combination
Almost half of the currently unused Pokemon type combinations normally pair with another type. Some of these would make for fairly weak combinationsWith normal either failing to balance the shortcomings of the secondary type or doubling down on weaknesses. If no Pokemon Given the normal/ice-type combination, for example, it would be at an incredible disadvantage in battle. Pokemons ice type is notoriously weak, and normal would hardly make up for any of its deficiencies; Normal only has resistance against Ghost, and Ice is only resistant against itself. A normal/ice-type Pokemon would therefore only do medium damage and have very little resistance to incoming attacks.

Some still unused Pokemon type combinations, however, seem certain to eventually appear in the games. Bug/Dragon-type, for example, would make a natural inclusion in an upcoming title. Generation 9 Bug/Flying-type Pokemon Yanmega feels as if it should have been Bug/Dragon-type, and the pairing would be equally balanced. Fire/Fairy-type is another combination that could be effective in combat and could easily be incorporated into a design that would make sense. Psychic/Fire-type Victini offers a reasonable example of what a Fire/Fairy-type Pokemon might resemble, with shining eyes and a cute design that still manages to summon flames.
With an ever-expanding roster of Pokemon Accompanying new game releases, More of these unused type combos will likely be seen in the wild. Whatever the next Pokemon Game to come is, fans can reasonably expect it to follow Scarlet and violet In slimming down the pile of unused Pokemon type combinations. If PokemonS gen 10 games learn from Scarlet and violets strengths and weaknesses while bringing new Pokemon type combinations to the table, fans may have a lot to look forward to.
for this, however, Players can be treated to new creatures with the release of Pokemon Legends: ZA. The upcoming game will take the franchise back to the area of Kalos, but as a title under the Legends series, a whole new avenue of possibilities opens up. The title will not be a remaster or remake, but a completely new story in Kalos - one that will likely introduce some new Pokemon that will, temporarily, be exclusive to the game and its region.
This can be found based on Pokemon Legends: ArceusThe previous title of the same structure. in Legends: ArceusNew Pokemon are presented in the Hisui area. Creatures like Ursaluna and Basculegion, evolutions to the already existing Ursaring and Basculin, respectively, made their debut. Seven new Pokemon have been added to the franchiseAs well as seventeen Hisuyan forms and alternate forms that are not considered Hisuyan but are released in the game.
Many of the new Pokemon and Hisuyan forms have different type combinations. Although it is unconfirmed, this type of approach to new Pokemon in Legends: ZA is expected, meaning there is a chance for an unused type combo to finally get its first user. Of course, if any unused type combination is struck from the current list, the hope lies with the Gen 10 Pokemon Games that are likely to see many more Pokemon that will raise the odds of the unused combos - even if they are used for new legendaries, mythicals or special forms like the new mega evolutions.
