A stunning development has occurred in Japanese copyright law: the arrest of three operators of spoiler and transcription sites, thanks to the cooperation of Kadokawa Corporation, Toho Co., Ltd., and Content Overseas Distribution Association (CODA). The arrest was announced by Kadokawa Group and press release from CODA. The offending group in question was investigated after uploading SOVEREIGN season 3, rights held by Kadokawa. This arrest was the first of its kind and a revealing development of copyright law enforcement in Japan.
As confirmed in the press release, the SOVEREIGN uploaded content included transcriptions of “detailed content of the entire story” and characters, dialogue, and scene developments, all while reaping advertising revenue. Thanks to the cooperation of the Miyagi Prefectural Police and Tome Police Station, these men were arrested after confirming that they conspired, despite violating copyright law, to generate profit. All in the interest of protecting the spread of culture, this demonstrates the seriousness of this offense under the Copyright Act and the effectiveness with which CODA has coordinated these measures.
