Donald Glover, Dominic Dirks and D.S. Pearson first met at New York University. performing together in the college comedy group Hammerkatz, they quickly discovered they had similar creative and comedic abilities (via MelJournal). Derrick Comedy never intended to become a major internet phenomenon. They launched their YouTube channel, DerrickComedyin 2006, just a year after the site launched, and before anyone was sure how big it would become and how it would change the way people consumed content. This was before YouTubers figured out how to game the system and algorithm to earn big paydays. The only way to stumble upon something like Derrick Comedy It was either by accident or because a friend passed it on.

“We never thought of ourselves as a YouTube sketch group. I don’t know if anyone thought at the time. For most of Derrick’s life, we joked about when we would get paid with our “YouTube dollars,” not knowing if that was what it was all about. At that time, most sketch groups we knew of did not post videos online. We felt a little ahead of the game, but we never invested in trying to figure out how to maximize our reach on YouTube. .Many bands that came after us completely surpassed us in this regard.”

Even the name seems random. Although the name “Derrick” comes from the names of the founders, Pearson has no idea why it is spelled that way. The Comedy part was created simply because Pearson wanted to make sure that anyone who came to his page understood what type of video they were about to see. In Girls Can’t Be Trusted, Glover’s character creates a short film for his class that is a desperate plea to his ex-girlfriend Melanie.
