Superman and Lois has featured many incredible artists over the years, though few have felt as significant to DC Universe lore as the one in the last episode. In episode 8 of Superman and Lois, the tension between Lex and Superman grew even further, culminating in a horrific revelation of Superman’s violent actions to the world.. While this storyline is effective and adds a lot to the Superman mythos, it is helped by the prominent feature of a memorable star.
The canonicity of Superman and Lois for the Arrowverse is a bit strange, with Earth-1 being the main setting and Superman and Lois‘Earth-38 being secondary. Other universes were also presented in the various shows. With inclusions even in the DCEU, separate canons can become difficult to manage, leading to the need for DC to differentiate its new DCU from other stories. However, there was one artist who has played several different DC characters who was able to fit seamlessly into DC’s story. Superman and Lois.
Superman & Lois marks Tom Cavanagh’s 6th appearance on a DC TV show since 2014
The Canadian actor debuted on Flash
Tom Cavanagh has been an important part of this DC multiverse since appearing in the pilot of The Flash in October 2014. The actor played several different roles in that series. Cavanagh played Eobard Thawne for a while, then Harrison Wells, among other characters. With his complex characterization skills, there were even rumors that Cavanagh would join Superman and Lois like Brainiac, although this has been proven to be false.
After appearances in The Flash, Supergirl, Arrow, Bat womanand DC’s Legends of Tomorrowit is appropriate that the artist would appear as Gordon Godfrey in the last episode of Superman and Lois. The character appears to be linked to Glorius Godfrey, a New God in DC Comics continuity, although this is unlikely to be realized in this series. Instead, Cavanagh’s appearance appears to be a simple cameo, allowing fans of the universe to see him once again in his canon.
Why Tom Cavanagh Appears as an All-New Character in Superman & Lois
Gordon Godfrey is an excellent use of the actor
There’s already so much going on Superman and Loisincluding stories of Superman losing his powers and conflicts with a complex version of Lex Luthor, who there’s little room in these final episodes to explore any of Cavanagh’s previous lore in this multiverse. Using the character as Harrison Wells could have had some success, although it would probably have distracted the series and felt out of place, especially at the end of this season. Using Cavanagh as Godfrey makes more sense.
With the episode’s story using a charismatic talk show, and with Cavanagh already having an association with the audience, this important scene connects immediately. Cavanagh’s appearance here seems consistent with how Superman and Lois used exciting artists and memorable comic book details without distracting from its important stories. There’s a lot to balance in the final episodes of Superman and Loisbut it’s good that the show found a way to give Cavanagh one more appearance before the series ended for good.
DC clearly cares about its continuity as well as its fans. Using Arrowverse alumni in Superman and Lois helps the series feel more connectedwhile the story’s details successfully keep those winks and nods at bay. Somehow, Superman and Lois found an incredible balance throughout its series. Seeing the show finally come to an end is disappointing, though the great care put into concluding this story, and the Arrowverse as a whole, feels done with love and satisfaction.
Superman and Loisthe Arrowverse’s seventh spinoff series, will take the titular characters from Metropolis to Smallville. The CW series is set after the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover, which saw the collapse of the multiverse and the merging of worlds into what is now Earth Prime. Superman and Lois sees Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) and Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin) dealing with all the pressures of their jobs, as well as being parents to two teenage children. Lois and Clark are no strangers to the Arrowverse, with Hoechlin’s Superman having been introduced way back when. Supergirl season 2. Meanwhile, Tulloch’s Lois made her debut in 2018’s “Elseworlds” crossover. The pair are joined by a growing cast of characters that includes a new iteration of Lana Lang.
