WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for the finale of What We Do in the Shadows.
The series finale What we do in the shadows ends with Guillermo and the team of vampires abandoning their “documentary”. Each key member of the What we do in the shadows cast returned to the celebrated series created by Taika Waititi and Jermaine Clement, who also wrote, directed and starred in the original 2014 film of the same name. After Alexander Skarsgård's surprise appearance in the penultimate episode of WWDITShis brief cameo did not make it into the final episode. The series finale was released on FX on December 16, 2024, and notably features three alternative versions of Nadja's hypnosis scene.
What we do in the shadows Season 6, Episode 11, simply titled “The Finale,” begins like any other episode. It sets up a hilarious premise in which Cravensworth's Monster is uncontrollably horny, forming a new romantic interest in the Guide. The whole “corporate world” theme of season 6 is barely mentioned in the finale. New characters like Jerry the Vampire – who made a big introduction in the season 6 premiere – are literally ripped from the story. Ultimately, the series finale What we do in the shadows ends up going easy on the emotional punches and instead maintains its ingenious brand of comedy until the final frame.
Why the Documentary Team Is Shutting Down Production
Vampires are hilariously oblivious to this
What we do in the shadows' finale slams the brakes on the narrative storylines established throughout Season 6 and instead abruptly lifts the veil on its documentary team, who have finally – after 61 episodes across six seasons – gathered all the production coverage they need. It's unclear exactly what the team plans to do with the documentary, but they have decided that they will no longer film the vampires' daily lives and will have all the necessary footage. Guillermo is the only one demanding a response to the sudden end of the documentarysince the rest of the vampires seem naturally indifferent to it.
Nadja's Alternative Hypnosis Scenes Explained
1 parody of a TV comedy and 2 recreations of classic movie endings
What we do in the shadows' finale features three different versions of Nadja's “perfect ending” scene, which are all available to watch on Hulu under the “Extra Hypnosis Features” tab. THE What we do in the shadowsThe premiere final episode that first aired on FX on December 16 featured Guillermo and Nandor's bed scene parodying the popular sitcom Newhartwhich ran on CBS for eight seasons between 1982 and 1990. The scene implies that Nandor and Guillermo are normal people in a romantic partnership and that the entire WWDITS series was just a dream that Nandor had.
The second scene spoofed the classic 1995 psychological thriller film The usual suspectsrecreating some of his most iconic scenes, scene by scene. This one features Colin Robinson, The Guide, The Monster, and the vampires' neighbor, Sean Rinaldi. The Guide portrays Dave Kujan of Chazz Palminteri of The usual suspects and features a series of flashback cuts from previous seasons of WWDITSincluding Matt Berry's celebrated Jackie Daytona character. The third scene recreates the ending of Roman Polanski's Oscar-winning horror, Rosemary's Baby and features several key members of the WWDITS cast.
The Vampire Crew's Old Black-and-White Movie Explained
Guillermo discovers that the vampires haven't changed at all
Guillermo expresses how upset he is with the ending of the documentary throughout the first half of the What we do in the shadows end. Nadja explains that this isn't the first time the vampire team has been filmed by a documentary crew. Colin takes out an old film projector and plays “Vampires”an unreleased black and white film directed by the Maysles Brothers in 1958.
The Maysles brothers, Albert and David, were real brothers and documentary filmmakers who made films like Seller (1969) and Gimmie Shelter (1970). It also features Jerry announcing his decision to enter super sleep, Laszlo building his Monster, and the return of Jackie Daytona. Guillermo discovers when watching the film that vampires haven't changed at all.
Why is Cravenworth's monster so excited
He is eager for Laszlo to make his bride
The opening scene of the final episode features a heavily aroused Cravensworth Monster, who makes several romantic offers to the Guide. Later, during Guillermo's heartfelt monologue, The Monster tries to have sex with a fake bear at the end of the scene. The running gag provides a lot of great comedic moments node What we do in the shadows end. Laszlo was still in the process of creating a female counterpart to The Monster at the beginning of the finale. The episode would have continued this story if it weren't for the documentary crew pulling the plug.
Why Nandor wants to get into crime fighting
Nandor is inspired after defending Guillermo in episode 10
At the beginning of the episode, Nandor attempts to recruit Guillermo to become his crime-fighting partner, to which Guillermo reluctantly agrees. After Nandor protects Guillermo from his abusive corporate boss in the previous episode, he apparently feels inspired to become a hero and help others in the community and wants Guillermo to be his sidekick. He launches a secret lair similar to Batman's bat cave beneath the vampire's mansion where he and Guillermo will begin their vigilante venture. Guillermo breaks the bad news to Nandor who wants to follow his own path and has no interest in fighting crime, but wants to remain friends.
What's next for Guillermo after the finale
He is trapped in Nandor's secret vigilante lair.
Guillermo tries to get away from the vampires so he can discover his next steps after the documentary ends. Although Guillermo fulfilled his biggest dream of becoming a vampire, he is no longer interested in following this life, which is one of the most shocking conclusions of the finale. He tries to say goodbye to Nandor – once at the end of the documentary and once for real. Guillermo plans to stay in touch with Nandor and the crew, but is finally ready to go his own way.
That is, until Nandor gives him no choice but to become his superhero sidekick. Nandor invites Guillermo to his coffin for the first time in the show's historywhich initially seems like a kind gesture of gratitude. Instead, Nandor reveals that he has already built the vigilante's lair that he introduced to Guillermo at the beginning of the episode. Nandor's coffin turns into an elevator that takes them “about 1,000 feet below the house” to the lair. Although this is truly the end of What we do in the shadowsit looks like Guillermo will continue to be a part of Nandor and the vampire crew for many years to come.
