All Upcoming DC Movies in 2024 and Beyond

There are many upcoming DC films are yet to come will be released in 2025 and beyond, with a wide range of films in various stages of development at the newly formed DC Studios. Essentially, 2024 marked a new beginning for DC’s on-screen properties as the stage was properly set for James Gunn’s 2025 revival to begin. Superman. Batman Azteca: Choque De Imperios (AKA Clash of Empires) is a fresh take on the story of the Dark Knight based in the Aztec Empire, following the story of Yohualli Coatl as he fights the Spanish conquistadors after they kill his parents. Coco screenwriter Matthew Aldrich will write the script for the film, and animation will be handled by Swaybox Studios. Dynamic Duo, following in a similar vein, could set the project apart from most comic book adaptations. The film will be directed by Swaybox co-founder Arthur Mintz and produced by DC Studios co-CEOs Peter Safran and James Gunn.

DC has a storied history of creating films and TV shows featuring some of the most infamous comic book villains. Suicide Squad has two movies, Joker of course has two starring Joaquin Phoenix, and Harley Quinn and Penguin have their own TV shows. THR reported in late September 2024 that the next such project would be Bane and Deathstroke.

He was last played by Tom Hardy in The Dark Knight Rises and Joe Mangianello in the DCEU, the villains will lead DC Studios film written by Matthew Orton (Captain America: Brave New World). No director has yet been attached to the project, and casting has not been confirmed.

Swamp Thing – TBA

Prior to the creation of DC Studios in November 2022, several other projects were in development. While some of these may never come to fruition, others could easily be included in James Gunn’s new DC Universe or created as DC Elseworlds projects like Batman And Joker franchises. Potential DC projects seem to come and go, with some only forming as rumors and others being canceled just months before their expected release, e.g. Batgirl.

Here are all the upcoming DC movies that have been heavily rumored, have significant question marks marking their production, but have either been reported by reputable industry sources or confirmed by talent associated with them to be still in active development:

  • Black Canary was announced for development in August 2021 upon release Birds of Prey. In Max’s exclusive film, Jurnee Smollett will reprise her role as Dinah Lance, aka Black Canary. In June 2022, Smollett revealed that the film was still in development.
  • Sergeant Rock There was almost a movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in the late 1980s. It remained in various stages of production until 2010, when reports about it dried up. There are rumors that a new DCU project, Sergeant Rock, will be coming to the DCU, focusing on the World War II hero. Luca Guadagnino has been discussed as a possible candidate to direct.
  • Lobo had been in development since 2009 but never came to fruition and went through various directors including Guy Ritchie, Brad Peyton and Michael Bay. Aquaman actor Jason Momoa has expressed interest in portraying the character, although Gunn and Safran confirmed that he will not be playing two different characters in the future of the DCU.
