The following contains spoilers for season 6 of Cobra Kai.
THE Cobra Kai The season 6 part 1 finale finally revealed the teams for the long-awaited Sekai Taikai tournament. First introduced in Season 5 as an international karate competition, Sekai Taikai is being treated as the ultimate Miyagi-do destination, with Daniel LaRusso even calling it “karate’s swan song.“Whether that is the case or not, there is no doubt that Sekai Taikai is the biggest stage Cobra Kai characters could be competing in the series.
After all, the tournament brings together dojos from all over the world. Instead of just fighting the best fighters in the Valley, Daniel and Johnny’s students are fighting at a higher level than ever before in Season 6 Part 2, fighting kids from dojos they’ve never heard of. This creates a huge unknown factor for the show, with Daniel himself originally acknowledging to Johnny that they have no idea what they’re up against. While there isn’t time in Season 6 for every person on every team to take the spotlight, there are still three main teams whose characters spend a lot of time on the mat.
Cobra Kai
Senseis: John Kreese and Kim Dae-Eun
Cobra Kai has officially returned, courtesy of Kreese and Kim Dae-Eun. In Cobra Kai 5th season, the dojo won a spot in the Sekai Taikai when Kenny beat Hawk in front of the tournament’s executive directors. Cobra Kai was closed, but Terry Silver’s fall didn’t completely take him off the board. By contacting Silver’s Cobra Kai partner Kim, Kreese was able to get the dojo back up and running, complete with its own roster of students.
Before Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 1 None were trained by Kreese, but they still represent the founding principles of Cobra Kai, as they are overseen by Kim Dae-Eun and Kim Sun-Yung, Kreese’s karate mentor. Kreese was the one who instilled in them his own particular brand of “fighting” when they entered Sekai Taikai.
That said, not all of Kreese’s students are new to him. In addition to Kwon, Kreese has Tory Nichols – who won him the championship in season 4 – back by his side. Tory is her captain, with Kwon acting as her male captain.. Four other students from Kim’s dojo are also on the team to provide the full roster.
Miyagi-Do
Senseis: Johnny Lawrence, Daniel LaRusso and Chozen Toguchi …all of Johnny’s students now wear Miyagi-do kimonos, illustrating the complete dissolution of Eagle Fang Karate.
After all the speculation about how the merger of Eagle Fang Karate and Miyagi-do would affect the name of the dojo, it was finally decided in Cobra Kai Season 6, Part 1, that Johnny would simply join Miyagi-do in an official capacity. Putting an end to theories that the two dojos would become “Miyagi-fang“All of Johnny’s students now wear Miyagi-do kimonos, illustrating the complete dissolution of Eagle Fang Karate.
As for the Sekai Taikai team, Mike Barnes helped them select a mix of Miyagi-do and Eagle Fang alumni, with their final roster consisted of Miguel, Robby, Sam, Devon, Demetri, and Hawk. Sam and Robby serve as the female and male captains, respectively. Tory was originally going to be on the team, but her fight with Daniel over not being able to finish his fight with Sam led her back to Kreese, paving the way for Hawk to take her place.
Kenny probably would have been a member as well, but Devon’s cheating cost him the opportunity to make it to Sekai Taikai. Of course, when Miguel is forced to briefly withdraw from the tournament in Season 6 Part 2, Kenny is given the chance to join the rest of the team in Spain, proving to be a great asset to them. The team is shaken by the familiar faces at the tournament and each other’s own insecurities, making it difficult to concentrate during the competition.
Iron Dragons
Sensei: Wolf …the current champions.
The only other team of fighters that even come close to the same spotlight as the two central teams are the Iron Dragons. The team is from Hong Kong, with Lewis Tan starring as Sensei Wolf giving commands in English and Chinese to his students. The team is just as aggressive as Cobra Kai and even more skilled. They are considered the defending champions.
The main fighters highlighted are the two team captains. Zara is a social media influencer who pretends to be a girl on camera, but is determined to take Tory down on the mat. Axel is physically abused by his sensei in order for him to perform well for the team. He is seen as the perfect fighter by outsiders, but Sam LaRusso is one of the only people who sees the truth in the way he is treated.
The rest of the team doesn’t get the chance to make a big impression, as they often give in in group fights to let the captains run the show. Of course, as part 2 of season 6 demonstrates, there’s even more to Iron Dragons than meets the eye.
Wolf is not just a sensei. He is also an underground fighter who is not afraid to break the law or take a life. He is also only employed as the Iron Dragons’ sensei because Terry Silver bought the dojo and hired him to make the team as bloodthirsty as he was. By making Silver the person behind the Iron Dragons, the series brings all of the franchise’s main players back for the final season.
All other Sekai Taikai teams
There are 16 karate teams from around the world
The last scene of Cobra Kai The Season 6 Part 1 finale briefly showed the other teams, but did not reveal specific details about them beyond their logos and gis. However, as part 2 demonstrates, Miyagi-do and Cobra Kai fight against a diverse roster of karate dojos. As reflected in their names, they represent a variety of countries including Japan, Ireland, Germany, Italy and more. These are the other 13 teams participating in the tournament:
-
Panther’s Fury (Spain)
-
Falchia Della Notte (Italy)
-
Hirobukan (Japan)
-
Tiger Attack (Russia)
-
Wasp’s Nest (Thailand)
-
Polarslaget (Sweden)
-
Tempete de Viperes (France)
-
Redeemers (Brazil)
-
Dojo Berlin (Germany)
-
West End Warriors (UK)
-
Dublin Thunder (Ireland)
-
Los Scorpiones (Mexico)
-
Nyumba Ya Duma (Kenya)
While Season 6 Part 2 doesn’t allow the audience to meet the individual fighters of these other teams, it’s important to note that each team is portrayed as even more aggressive than Cobra Kai at different points in the tournament. Everyone also makes it clear that they are aiming for Miyagi-do, the only American team in the competition and the newest team to be added to the tournament. It is implied that everyone else is a veteran of the tournament.
The Fighting Dragons Didn’t Appear
Jackie Chan’s team would hardly participate
A possible addition to Sekai Taikai that would be familiar to the franchise is the Fighting Dragons. In the film led by Jackie Chan in 2010 Karate Kid remake, the Fighting Dragons were introduced as a Chinese martial arts team. At the end of the film, Chan’s character Mr. Han took control of the Fighting Dragons. With Mr. Han will soon meet Daniel in the next Karate Kid movie, many fans were wondering if Sekai Taikai could be used to bring them together.
While the international aspect of the tournament made this seem feasible, it should not be forgotten that Cobra Kai Season 6 will not be used to set up The Karate Kid film. Not only that, but the Fighting Dragons are not karate practitioners. Despite the film’s title, the martial arts style presented in The Karate Kid the remake was kung fu, not karate. So, since Sekai Taikai is strictly a karate competition, Fighting Dragons would have no place Cobra Kai 6th season.
Set decades after the events of the Karate Kid franchise, Cobra Kai changes direction and puts viewers in the perspective of a former rival/antagonist, Johnny Lawrence. In his 50s and down on his luck, a chance encounter with a bullied young man leads Johnny back to Karate. Agreeing to help him, Johnny takes the opportunity to revive his old home, the Cobra Kai dojo – becoming a haven for outcast teenagers.
