All in the family One of the most iconic sitcoms of the 1970s, it was so popular that it spawned a total of 7 spin-offs, filling the on-screen lives of many supporting and supporting characters with their own shows. Created by Norman Lear and Bud Yorkin, this working class sitcom was set in Queens, New York and was based on a British sitcom called Until death do us part. All in the family known for its prejudiced patriarch Archie Bunker (Carroll O’Connor), who was used as a vehicle for commentary on social issues in the 1970s.
The Bunkers and their neighbors the Jeffersons developed relationships with other characters throughout the series. All in the familymany of whom have made their own spin-offs. Given the show’s cultural significance and fandom, this is not surprising. All in the family, JeffersonsAnd Good times were also revived for a special live performance in 2019. Looking back over the past decades, it’s amazing how seven concerts followed. All in the family and belong to his universe.

All in the Family (1971–1979)
The revolutionary sitcom that started it all
All in the family primarily takes place at Bunker’s residence at 704 Hauser Street.. Archie and Edith Bunker (Jean Stapleton) live in the same house with their daughter Gloria (Sally Struthers) and her husband Mike Stivic (Rob Reiner). Archie and Mike are always arguing as Archie is politically conservative and Mike is usually portrayed as a liberal.
Archie’s bigotry should never have been accepted.
Another of Archie’s sparring partners is neighbor George Jefferson, and they both criticize each other’s race. Archie’s bigotry should never have been accepted. Most likely, the entire sitcom was intended to “shed humorous emphasis” on human “weaknesses, prejudices and problems”, as disclaimer before the first episode.
All in the family Over nine seasons, CBS aired 205 episodes. It had such a cultural impact that it was referenced in many other shows over the decades, including The Simpsons And It’s That 70’s Show and the Archie and Edith chairs are now on display at the Smithsonian Institution. The show also won several Golden Globe and Emmy Awards during its original run, including the Globe for Best Television Series – Musical/Comedy three years in a row from 1972 to 1974.
Maude (1972–1978)
Hit spin-off starring Bea Arthur
Maude is a comedy television series that first aired in 1972. The series centers on the life of Maude Findlay, an outspoken middle-aged woman living in the New York City suburbs who is considered an outcast in her conservative community. First All in the family The spin-off was almost as popular as the original show, thanks in large part to the legendary Bea Arthur in the title role. This show was of course Maud, which ran for 141 episodes over six seasons from 1972 to 1978.. Maud Findlay (Bea Arthur) first appears as Cousin Edith Bunker in the 1971 film. All in the family episode entitled “A Visit from Cousin Maud”. Maude comes to the Bunker house to help when the family gets sick with the flu. Maud becomes yet another person with whom Archie disagrees politically.
After the 1972 backdoor pilot All in the familyMaude has her own show. Like his predecessor, Maud dealt with some serious problems throughout my day. Maud received almost the same critical acclaim as the original show. It was nominated for numerous awards, including an Emmy and a Golden Globe, as evidenced by the fact that in 1973, the only reason Maud didn’t win Best TV Show (Musical/Comedy) at the Globes because All in the family back off.

One of the key topics All in the family there were race relations, exemplified by the relationship between Archie and his neighbor George Jefferson. Second spin-off All in the family was Good timesand it did even more to bring the lived experiences of black Americans to families across 1970s America. (although technically it was a spin-off Maud).
Florida Evans (Esther Rolle) was Maude Findley’s maid in Tuckahoe, New York. Good times continued to develop Florida life with her family in Chicago. They live in a public housing project and struggle to get by at times.
While Florida’s husband Maud was a fireman named Henry (John Amos), her husband Good times there was James, a hard-working man who often held multiple jobs to support his family.
While Florida’s husband Maud was a fireman named Henry (John Amos), her husband Good times there was James, a hard-working man who often held multiple jobs to support his family. Amos continued to play the role of James until the character’s death. Florida and James have three children: JJ, Michael and Thelma. Another interesting connection to the sitcom universe is that Mike Evans (who played Lionel Jefferson on All in the family And Jeffersons) created Good times with Eric Monte. Just like Maud, Good times lasted 6 seasons, although there were slightly fewer episodes – 131.
The Jeffersons (1975–1985)

Bye Good times was a spin-off Maud, he used All in the family universe to shed light on the black American experience at a time when it was almost controversial. Next spin-off Jeffersons, did the same thing, although it was taken directly from the characters All in the family (and may have been much more successful than Good times). The Parenting Show wouldn’t be the same without the Jefferson family next door, so it’s no surprise that they got their own spinoff.
In their own show, the Jeffersons interact with new friends and neighbors while embracing new lifestyles.
Although Archie and George (Sherman Hemsley) fight a lot, Louise Jefferson (Isabel Sanford) is Edith Bunker’s close friend, and they both find it difficult to say goodbye when the Jeffersons move away. George owns a profitable chain of dry cleaners, so he and his family move into a beautiful apartment on New York’s Upper East Side, a backdoor pilot. All in the family. In their own show, the Jeffersons interact with new friends and neighbors while embracing new lifestyles.
Jeffersons was one of the longest-running sitcoms, lasting an impressive 11 seasons consisting of 253 episodes. This is one of the few All in the family a spin-off that was arguably more successful than the original show and had an equally impressive cultural legacy. Unfortunately, this did not lead to success in winning awards in the same way, although it can be argued that this was also due to the prejudices of the time – prejudices that Jeffersons actively tried to fight.

Although many shows are related to All in the family did extremely well Registration lasted only four episodes. The show was a spin-off Jeffersonsalthough it failed to capture the charm and appeal of its parent show or any other All in the family side effects such as Maud or Good times. Low ratings were cited as the reason. Registration cancel.
As is the case with Maud And Good timesThe main character of the new series was the maid from her previous series. Florence Johnston (Marla Gibbs) worked for the Jefferson family on their show, but Registration focused on her life as an executive housekeeper at the St. Frederick’s Hotel in New York City. Florence Johnson is back Jeffersons after Registration ended. When Florence returned for her original show, it was discovered that the St. Frederick’s Hotel had burned down.

All in the family took a leaf out of its book and spawned another sitcom after the series ended. Archie Bunker’s place began with both Archie and Edith, but Jean Stapleton left the show and was killed off shortly after the series began. Unlike others All in the family spin-offs, Archie Bunker’s place was a direct continuation of the parent show and was a sequel of sorts (though unfortunately this didn’t make it as popular as All in the family or other side effects such as Jeffersons And Maud).
Archie Bunker’s place extended Archie’s role on television to over twelve years.
Even earlier All in the family ended, Stapleton expressed her desire to distance herself from the role of Edith. Edith’s death in the context of the spin-off left Archie a widow, and although he missed Edith terribly, he continued working at his pub and focused on caring for Edith’s young relative, Stephanie Mills (Danielle Brisebois). Archie Bunker’s place extended Archie’s role on television to over twelve years.
Gloria (1982–1983)
Another short-lived All in the Family spin-off
Spin-off All in the family the spotlight is on “Gloria” by Sally Struthers.
Sally Struthers was the next to get hers. All in the family spin-off as Gloria Bunker Stivic, daughter of Archie and Edith. She reprized her role several times in Archie Bunker’s place and then took center stage Gloriathe latest series dedicated to a member of the Bunker family. The series began after a backdoor pilot on Archie Bunker’s place entitled “Gloria: The First Day”. Gloria and Mike are no longer together, so Gloria and her son Joey leave California and return home to New York. Gloria works as an assistant to two veterinarians.
Like Checking, Gloria had an incredibly short mileage compared to others All in the family spin-offs, although they managed to reach 21 episodes instead of 4. It was also not as critically received as the original show or shows like Maud And Jeffersons. Interestingly, one of Struther’s co-stars Gloria there was Burgess Meredith, best known for playing the Penguin in the 1960s. Batman television series and as Mickey Goldsmith in Rocky.
704 Houser (1994)
The final spin-off was also one of the least successful
The final spin-off of this world of the Norman Lear show – 704 Hauser. Location is the only specific link from All in the family to the series, but it is strong, despite the fact that 704 Hauser was only aired for five episodes. The Cumberbatches are a Black family that moves into the old Bunker house in Queens. John Amos (who played James Evans in Good times) is the father of Ernie Cumberbatch. In a spread All in the familyErnie is liberal, but his son is quite conservative.
Unfortunately, this lack of hostility was not enough to make 704 Hauser success
The series gave John Amos and Norman Lear another chance to work together after tensions on set caused Amos to quit. Good times. Amos discovered that 704 Hauser had a much better backstage experience than Good times (by using electronic warfare):
“IN Good timesI thought we should have had more black writers on staff… I felt like I should have been more involved in the development of the scripts. But we don’t have such fights. 704 Hauser. Today Lear listens more willingly. He softened. We both softened. We really enjoy working together.”
Lear called 704 Hauser characters”responsible” and explained that they know what they are talking about in disputes. Unfortunately, this lack of hostility was not enough to make 704 Hauser was a success and became one of the least successful spin-offs Everyone is in the Family.
Other TV shows that have had multiple spin-offs
TV viewers are accustomed to criminal trials that have side effects. Law and order, CSIAnd NCIS they all have extra shows. Even Criminal Minds there were two additional shows, but they were unsuccessful. In most cases, the flagship series will survive the spin-offs.although not always. However, crime procedurals are not the only series that have several spin-offs.
Genre television is also known for its many spin-offs. The Vampire Diaries had both Originalsabout the original family of vampires and Heritageabout the next generation of supernatural beings. The Walking Dead had many side effects: Fear the Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, The Walking Dead: Dead Cityand much more. Star Trek And Doctor Who are also known for their many spin-offs. Each of these spin-offs was able to expand the knowledge of different universes.
Less often they do shows like All in the family get a spin-off series. It was much more common to see crossovers between sitcoms or family shows airing on the same network.. All in the family helped change that. Happy days there were actually five side effects: Laverne and Shirley, Mork and Mindy, Joanie loves Chachi, Blanksy beautiesAnd Completely unexpected. Many of these shows even had their own spin-offs. However, only the first two were truly successful.
One show that television fans may not have realized had a few spin-offs is Golden girls. Golden Palace saw three characters take over a hotel. Empty nest was technically also a by-product Golden girlsalthough it did not feature any of the show’s main characters. Series Nurses also came out of this.
Even superhero TV shows have spin-offs.. CW Arrow created Arrowverse. Most of the superhero shows that aired on The CW after Arrow escaped from the existing universe. Flash was a more direct by-product, while Supergirl was eventually incorporated into the universe following the move from CBS to The CW. Following these series there were Legends of Tomorrow, Black LightningAnd Batwomanalthough the latter two were only revealed to be part of the same universe during the Multiverse Threat storyline.
Superman and Loisalthough, apparently, the action takes place in a different universe than the main one Arrowversealso dropped out of the show and became the last one spin off I’m on CW.
