Witch Universe is a defining aspect of modern horror films and has produced some of the scariest moments the genre has ever seen. With a mixture of supernatural events, real events and ancient curses. Spell is a franchise that constantly keeps viewers on edge.
It is important to note that each film in Witch Universe scary in some way, shape or form. Annabelle (2014)
Plays safe with fears
First Annabelle the film is often regarded as one of Spellthe weakest both in terms of storytelling and its ability to scare its audience. In fact, some people believe Spell the franchise is better off without it. Being a spin-off of the first film, Annabelle tells the story of the titular doll who becomes possessed by a satanic demon and torments a young couple. It serves as an interesting entry into the franchise, but ultimately doesn’t deliver the same sense of true horror as the others. Witchcraft films could.
Annabelle relies heavily on jump scares and familiar scary imagery, which makes the film fail to stand out from the rest. This is especially harmful considering that Annabelle was released just a year after Spell itself a film that completely changed the modern horror landscape. However, a notable frightening moment in Annabelle The basement scene where Mia (Annabelle Wallis) is tormented and haunted by a demonic force possessing a doll is well executed.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)
Sacrifice your shyness
The third part is basically Witchcraft row, The devil made me do it certainly tells a compelling and unique story. The film focuses more on the legal implications of the idea that demonic possession makes a person unaccountable for their crimes, which makes for interesting viewing. However, this tonal shift means that The devil made me do it sacrifices some of the most chilling moments that make the franchise so great.
The plot centers around Arne Johnson (Ruairi O’Connor), who is on trial for murder and enlists the help of the Warrens to defend his case. The devil made me do it it’s actually based on the first trial in US history to use demonic possession as a defense, but it’s not necessarily scary. However, the film’s opening scene, in which a nine-year-old boy is exorcised, is one of the most heartbreaking and grotesque moments of the entire franchise and certainly adds to the film’s fear. The devil made me do it.

The Curse of La Llorona (2019)
Formula screamers
This film is a unique entry in Witchcraft The universe is like The Curse of La Llorona exists entirely outside of the franchise’s main narrative. Taking inspiration from Mexican folklore, the film introduces the universe to the tale of La Llorona, also known as the Weeping Woman. La Llorona is a vengeful spirit who preys on children, which makes the film’s plot intriguing, but ultimately… The Curse of La Llorona fails to create real, terrifying fear in the audience.
The film has some particularly scary moments, but fails to maintain that consistency throughout the film. The Curse of La Llorona often resorts to jump scares to scare viewers, which, while effective in the short term, ultimately detracts from the creepiness of the overall story. However, a particularly harrowing and disturbing moment comes when Anna (Linda Cardellini) is attacked by La Llorona in her swimming pool while trying to save her daughter from a demon.

The Nun II (2023)
Stronger than the first, but not as scary
Last entry in Witch Universe, Nun II builds on the foundation laid in the original Nun movie. In many ways it is similar to its predecessor, which is set in 1950s France as the story of the demonic Valak continues to unfold. Taissa Farmiga returns as Sister Irene, the only person who encountered Valak in the previous film and survived, as she is called upon to investigate a series of deaths attributed to the demon.
Just like the original Nun II makes heavy use of the gothic atmosphere to bring fear to the big screen, and certainly builds on the narrative set by its predecessor. However, the scare is short-lived and doesn’t really live up to what audiences have come to expect from the film. Witch UniverseAt the same time, throughout the entire film there is a noticeable lack of sustained tension. Narratively, Nun II is an improvement over its predecessor, but it never reaches the heights of fear that the franchise has become so famous for.

Annabelle Comes Home (2019)
Chaotic and stressful
Third film in Annabelle series is one of the most interesting rooms in the whole Witch Universe. It tells the story of the Warrens, who decide to return the infamous Annabelle doll back to their home. However, once the doll is returned to the Warrens’ haunted artifact room, it begins to release other evil spirits trapped inside.
This rather chaotic premise means that Annabelle comes home really creates a feeling of constant tension throughout. The claustrophobic setting of the Warren home and artifact room gives the film a unique opportunity to scare audiences. However, it must be said that the rare comedic relief and somewhat lighter tone make it impossible Annabelle comes home really scare the audience just like other films in Witch Universe done.

Nun (2018)
Contained by his weaknesses
Bye Nun Upon release, the film received mixed to negative reviews from both critics and audiences, making it impossible to criticize the film for its scare factor. Nun is a side story revolving around Valak, a terrifying demon who appeared in The Conjuring 2. Set in 1950s Romania, Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) is sent to a convent to investigate a mysterious death at the hands of a demonic nun.
The gothic setting, religious iconography and Valak’s intimidating presence all create Nun terrible addition to Witch Universe. The film’s opening scene is as iconic as it is terrifying: a frightened nun chooses to die by suicide rather than allow Valak to possess her. However, narrative weaknesses Nun mean that some fears have less impact because they don’t fit into the story in a coherent or reasonable way.

Annabelle: Creation (2017)
A truly terrifying origin story
Prequel to Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation often called one of the best films Witch Universe. It breathed new life into the franchise by exploring the horrifying origins of Annabelle herself. It tells the story of a puppeteer and his wife who take a nun and orphan girls into their home. When one of the girls discovers Annabelle locked in a closet, a powerful demon is released and begins to torment the characters.
A significant step up from its predecessor, both in terms of storytelling and fear. Annabelle: Creation excels at creating tension and letting those fears pay off. The sheer evil of the doll and its demonic possession manage to evoke a true sense of horror, especially in relation to the character of Janice (Talitha Bateman). One of the film’s scariest scenes is when the demon targets Janice’s soul, seriously injuring her and leaving her in a wheelchair.
2
The Conjuring (2013)
The start of something terrifying
Spell was the first in the Conjuring universe and to this day remains one of the scariest supernatural horror films in modern cinema. Spell introduces viewers to demonologists Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) as they investigate hauntings in the Perron family home. It’s a masterful blend of tension and dread, creating a true sense of terrifying, unbearable dread.
Instead of just relying on jump scares, Spell creates an unsettling atmosphere through unnerving silence, creaking floorboards and off-screen sounds. Every scene seems to be possessed by demons that the Warrens are trying to capture, and it all culminates in a climactic exorcism scene. One of the most brilliant and terrifying moments Spell there’s the infamous peek-a-boo scene as Carolyn (Lili Taylor) is led into the basement before a pair of hands reach out and clap, extinguishing her only source of light.

The Conjuring 2 (2016)
Heartbreaking Fears
The Conjuring 2 undoubtedly the scariest movie Witch Universe. The action takes place in London in 1977. The Warrens are sent to investigate the infamous real-life Enfield ghost. What puts The Conjuring 2 so high above the rest is its pure intensity. It introduces the demonic Valak and builds tension through an atmosphere of fear, suspenseful sounds, and religious iconography.
Undoubtedly the most iconic and frightening fear in the world. The Conjuring 2 occurs when Ed looks at a zoetrope toy with a gnarled figure walking around it. The figure disappears from the toy before Ed looks up to see the Crooked Man materialize in front of him and begin to chase him. Incredibly suspenseful, with solid storytelling and incredible performances. The Conjuring 2 is a truly terrifying master class in how to scare an audience.
