All 15 Multi-Medic TV Stories in Doctor Who Explained

Over the years, there were several Doctor Who stories that feature more than one version of the Doctor. Many of the biggest Doctor Who stories of all time focused on the titular character crossing paths with himself. However, some of these episodes or serials did not primarily focus on more than one Doctor together.

Some of these multi-doctor stories saw the doctors overlap for just a few scenes or even a brief moment, while others consumed the entire plot. While many Doctor WhoThe best companions also appeared, the main focus was that there were one or more incarnations of the Doctor.

The three doctors

Introducing: The First, Second and Third Doctors

“The Three Doctors” was the first multi-doctor story in Doctor Who. This series marked the tenth anniversary of the show, in which the Third Doctor’s exile on Earth finally came to an end, and he crossed paths with his first two incarnations.

When the Time Lords faced a power problem, the President of Gallifrey broke his own laws, reached across the temporal streams and summoned the Second Doctor to aid his successor. However, when the two clashed, the Time Lords tried again and captured the First Doctor from a rose garden in the hopes that he could keep their future in order.

The Five Doctors

Introducing: The First, Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth Doctors

“The Five Doctors” was another birthday story, but it was also a fantastic story 90 minutes long Doctor Who special charity. This was the first time that all the doctors at the time appeared together in one episode. Tom Baker technically didn’t reprise his role, but the Fourth Doctor was there, and the show used archival footage from “Shada.”

Richard Hurndall also played the First Doctor, as William Hartnell passed away eight years earlier. Because of the strange Time Scoop device, the Doctors and their classic companions were transported through time and space and fell into Gallifrey’s Death Zone. It was incredible to see so many doctors at once, as well as some of their closest confidants together.

The two doctors

Introducing: The Second and Sixth Doctor

“The Two Doctors” saw a rather unusual combination of the titular characters working together, the Second and Sixth Doctors. Patrick Troughton’s final Doctor Who episodes also included the first appearance of the Sontarans in Doctor Who for more than seven years as well.

When the Second Doctor and Jamie tried to stop the Sontarans from accessing time travel, the aliens fought back, which altered the Sixth Doctor’s memories of his past. Together, Peri and the Sixth Doctor returned to try and save his former self from the tyranny of the Sontarans. The personalities of the Second and Sixth Doctors were totally different, but they also proved that, regardless of their individual qualities, Doctors always encountered problems wherever they went.

The Timelord’s Trial

Introducing: The Sixth Doctor and the Valeyard

“The Judgment of the Lord of Time” introduced Doctor WhoIt’s the Valeyard for the audience while the Sixth Doctor was on trial on Gallifrey. The Valeyard’s true identity has never been fully clarifiedbut the Master stated that he was possibly “somewhere between [the Doctor’s] twelfth and final incarnation.” This was later refuted, but Doctor WhoThe plot of The Timeless Child allowed the Valeyard to still be some version of the Doctor.

Regardless of whether he was a direct incarnation of the Doctor or not, it was evident that he was part of the titular Time Lord. Colin Baker’s final series, “The Trial of the Timelord”, took the Sixth Doctor to extremes, and he tried to make his case that his adventures across the universe were not as detrimental to historical events as the Time Lords believed.

Dimensions in time

Introducing: From the First to the Seventh Doctors

“Dimensions in Time” was another charity special for underprivileged childrenwho starred in the first seven incarnations of the Doctor. However, the First and Second Doctors did not appear on screen, but they were frequently mentioned and were still crucial to the story. In this story crossed with the British soap opera EastendersThe Rani captured the Doctors and moved them to Albert Square in East London over three time periods.

For British viewers familiar with EastendersThis was a hilarious watch. The Doctors and their companions’ interactions with several iconic soap opera characters they were fantastic, and Rani’s chaos was right for her. Although it was unclear whether “Dimensions in Time” was officially canon or not, the Doctors ended up reunited in one place at the end.

Introducing: The Fifth and Tenth Doctors

While the Titanic crashing into the Tenth Doctor’s TARDIS at the end of the Season 3 finale was quite unexpected, “Time Crash” made things even more complicated with the sudden arrival of the Fifth Doctor. This was the first time that the Doctors met together Doctor WhoThe classical and modern eras, and their hilarious yet brief meeting, was a great way for the show to do that.

While the TARDIS shields were down, when the Titanic crashed, the two Doctors’ ships collided. “Time Crash” made excellent references to the past Doctor Who stories like “Love and Monsters” and was a fabulous opportunity for new generations of viewers to become familiar with the series’ classic characters.

Introducing: The Tenth Doctor and Doctor Metacrisis

“Journeys End” didn’t initially appear to be a multi-doctor story until the second half of the episode. After Donna touched the Doctor’s hand as the TARDIS burned, she transformed into an identical copy of the Tenth Doctor – the Metacrisis. The creation of Doctor WhoThe Metacrisis Doctor’s was a wonderful storyline that not only helped save the universe from the Daleks and the reality bomb, but also paid off a prequel “The Christmas Invasion” storyline.

During the first fifteen hours of the Tenth Doctor’s regeneration cycle, he lost his hand in a sword fight with the Sycorax leader on Christmas Day, and it was later returned to him by Captain Jack Harkness. Metacrisis was part Doctor Whois DoctorDonna, with the Doctor’s mind and Donna’s humanityand so he could live out his days with Rose.

Doctor’s day

Featuring: The First to Ninth Doctors, the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors, the War Doctor and the Twelfth Doctor

The ending of “The Name of the Doctor” created one of the Doctor WhoThe biggest plot twists and introduced John Hurt as the War Doctor. The Eleventh Doctor entered his own time stream to find Clara, where he saw all past incarnations of himself, including the War Doctor. The War Doctor finally interacted properly with the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors node Doctor Who 50th anniversary special “The Day of the Doctor”.

The War Doctor was the version of the titular character who fought in the Time War. When the episode’s three main doctors found a way to save Gallifrey from destruction, they again worked with their entire pasts to freeze their home planet in time. However, they also saw the Twelfth Doctor come to their aid. Previous doctors were shown through archival footageexcept Tom Baker, who made a surprising appearance as curator.

Introducing: The First and Twelfth Doctors

“Listen” wasn’t a multi-doctor episode in the traditional sense, but more than one doctor appeared. The episode delved into the Doctor’s upbringing on Gallifrey and revisited the barn from “The Day of the Doctor”, where the War Doctor seized the moment. When Clara overheard a conversation about the Academy and the Time Lords, she realized she was in the Doctor’s timeline.

She quickly slid under the Doctor’s childhood bed and instinctively grabbed his ankle as he left. Although the Twelfth Doctor did not interact with his younger self, the episode still featured two distinct versions of the character. “Listen” was complex and focused primarily on Danny and Clara’s relationship, but it also provided some intriguing insights into the Doctor’s life before he was the Doctor.

Twice once

Introducing: The First and Twelfth Doctors

After the First Doctor’s moving appearance at the end of “The Doctor Falls,” in the following episode, “Twice Upon a Time,” the Twelfth Doctor returned to the moment he first regenerated. David Bradley played the First Doctor in “Twice Upon a Time,” after playing William Hartnell in An adventure in space and time.

This was an intriguing concept for an episode, as Not only was the Twelfth Doctor preparing to regenerate, but the First Doctor was as well. Together, the two Doctors worked to save the life of Alistair Lethbridge Stewart’s ancestor Archibald, and also faced the Testimony, who allowed the Twelfth Doctor to say a proper goodbye to Clara and Bill before regenerating.

Judo fugitive

Introducing: The Thirteenth and Fugitive Doctors

“Fugitive from Judo” was an interesting story of several doctors. After the Thirteenth Doctor met Ruth Clayton on Earth, she later discovered that the human was also the Doctor.hidden by a Chameleon Bow. With the help of Yaz, Ryan and Graham, the Doctor attempted to protect humanity from the Judoon’s search for an escaped criminal – Ruth.

The Thirteenth Doctor did not remember being Jo Martin’s Fugitive Doctor, nor the events that led her to work for the Division. However, the Fugitive Doctor also had no memory of being the Thirteenth Doctor, which complicated matters further. While Judo was kicked out and the pair split up, the two still had no idea which of their pasts was correct.

The timeless children

Introducing: The Thirteenth and Fugitive Doctors

“The Timeless Children” reunited the Thirteenth and the Fugitive Doctors for the second time. Doctor WhoThe plot of The Timeless Child finally started to get answers when the Master’s anger got the best of him. Throughout the episode, the Master revealed that the Doctor was the model for the entire Time Lord race after they were discovered as abandoned youths and experimented on on Gallifrey.

The Thirteenth Doctor found the Fugitive Doctor inside the matrix. The Fugitive Doctor was considered a visionalthough she was confused by his sudden arrival, she offered invaluable advice to her counterpart who helped her escape the Matrix. Through information provided by the Master and the presence of the Fugitive Doctor, it was determined that the former Ruth Clayton was likely one of the Doctor’s incarnations as the Timeless Child.

Once upon a time

Introducing: The Thirteenth and Fugitive Doctors

The Thirteenth and the Fugitive Doctors met for the third time at Doctor Who Stream episode “Once Upon a Time”. After the Thirteenth Doctor threw himself into a time storm to try and save Yaz and Dan, his past, present and future were undone. Inside the Temple of Atropos, the Doctor caught her reflection, shocked to see the Fugitive Doctor looking at her.

The Thirteenth Doctor then realized that she was actually living in a memory of her Runaway incarnation. Throughout different points in the episode, the Doctor oscillated between her only two known female forms, while also jumping back and forth in time and space between memories, specifically how his Runaway self caused the end of the Dark Times.

The power of the doctor

Featuring: The Thirteenth, First, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth and Fugitive Doctors

“The Power of the Doctor” was Jodie Whittaker’s final episode of Doctor Who as the Thirteenth Doctor. As the Master attempted to steal the Doctor’s regenerations, for the third time in Doctor Who story, Yaz, Dan and the Thirteenth Doctor leapt through time and space in search of answers about a series of strange occurrences. After the Master took over the Doctor’s body, she woke up in a rocky landscape and was faced with several versions of herself.

“The Power of the Doctor” saw the return of the First, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Fugitive Doctors, all dressed in Gallifreyan robes. The other Doctors identified themselves as the Guardians of the Edge, encouraged her to embrace the end of her life and told her not to hesitate to regenerate, which was a fascinating way to end the Thirteenth Doctor’s journey.

Introducing: The Fourteenth and Fifteenth Doctors

“The Giggle” was a groundbreaking episode of Doctor Who because of the unexpected official arrival of Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor. While the Fourteenth Doctor, Donna, Mel and Kate tried to save the world from the tyrannical Toymaker who was manipulating the minds of humanity, the Doctor was shot dead on the UNIT helipad.

However, in a shocking twist, the Fourteenth Doctor did not disappear, and the Fifteenth Doctor was literally separated from him instead of. Doctor WhoThe bigeneration was a first for the program and a surprising moment for the program. The two Doctors worked together with their former companions to capture the Toymaker, a member of the Doctor Who‘s Pantheon of Gods, before separating into their individual TARDISes.
