The cinematic future of Star Wars looks admittedly brilliant given the 10 projects in development, but the unfortunately common production issues Lucasfilm has faced at Disney make some more unlikely to happen than others. The last decade has been huge for Star Wars. Not only was the sequel trilogy released, but the franchise also gained a foothold on the small screen via Star Wars several TV programs. After a long break from the big screen, Star Wars the upcoming films should return the franchise to its former cinematic glory.
This shift from films to TV shows occurred as a result of sequels being some of the Star Wars films with the worst rating by the public. The divisive nature Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalkerspecifically, it saw Disney shift focus to TV shows like The Mandalorian. Since 2019, Star Wars success was confined exclusively to Disney+ after the controversial reaction to the sequel trilogy and the troubled productions of Lucasfilm's anthology films.
As long as it's coming Star Wars shows are still expected, the galaxy far, far away is ready to return to the theater. This is certainly exciting after a recent hiatus, but the production issues that plagued the anthology films and sequel trilogy still loom large in the minds of audiences. For this reason, many of the next Star Wars it is unlikely that the films will come to fruition, although some are certain for the next few years.

Taika Waititi's Star Wars film
Updates have been few and far between
Not even six months later The Rise of Skywalkerit was announced that Taika Waititi would write and direct a Star Wars film. Waititi worked The Mandalorian 1st season as director and voice of IG-11, leading him to launch a new Star Wars film that left the limits of the Skywalker Saga. It was announced that Waititi would write the film while filming other projects such as Thor: Love and Thunder. Fast forward three years to 2023, the film still has no script amid rumors of its cancellation.
Regardless, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that the film was still in development. It was reported that Waititi would continue working on the script after the 2023 WGA strike was resolved, but little has been heard about the film more than a year after the strike ended. When combining this lack of news with Waititi's latest projects being less well-received than his previous Hollywood work, This movie is the least likely Star Wars next films actually happen.

Lando
Newer updates don't make Lando more likely
In 2020, it was announced that a Disney+ series centered on Lando Calrissian would be developed. After a long period of inactivity on this project, it was announced that the original showrunner – Justin Simien – was leaving the project. This came with the news that the actor responsible for young Lando in Solo: A Star Wars Story, Donald Glover would join his brother Stephen to turn Lando in a Star Wars feature film.
It seems that Lucasfilm is betting more on other films, making Lando an unlikely probability…
This was last confirmed in September 2024, but no news has been provided since then. Although the concept of a Lando film written by the Glover brothers is excessively exciting, inactivity regarding the project's development between 2020 and 2023 is cause for concern. Furthermore, it seems that Lucasfilm is betting more on other films, making Lando an unlikely probability.

Shawn Levy's Star Wars Movie
A big TV show gets in the way of this project
In November 2022, another Star Wars the film was announced in development by director Shawn Levy. It was reported that Levy would begin active development on the project after working on the Marvel Studios film. Deadpool and Wolverine and Stranger Things 5th season. As was the case with Waititi's film, the 2023 WGA strike halted early development, but Levy remained steadfast that the film would happen.
At the end of 2024, Levy has already completed the Deadpool and Wolverine. Similarly, Stranger Things Season 5 is expected to finish filming in early 2025, with the installment releasing later that year. With that in mind, Levy should have time to commit to a Star Wars film in 2025, making this project more likely than Lando or the Waititi film. That said, it remains to be seen whether Levy will begin work on another MCU film after Deadpool and Wolverinesuccess or whether he will openly confirm that full development with Lucasfilm has already begun.

Rian Johnson's Star Wars Trilogy
Will the divisive director ever return to Star Wars?
Despite being the most divisive Star Wars movie of all time, Star Wars: The Last Jedi caused Lucasfilm to have a lot of faith in writer and director Rian Johnson before the film's release. This faith and this clear love for Episode VIII of the Skywalker Saga, was rewarded with a deal for Johnson to create a Star Wars trilogy. Like Waititi's film, these three films were removed from the main line Star Wars saga. Then the storm came.
Lucasfilm's departure from the original Episode IX script, which was closer to The Last Jedi what The Rise of Skywalker proved how reactive the studio can be, reducing Johnson's chances of a return.
The Last Jedi divide the Star Wars fan base by two, and it still hasn't recovered seven years later, putting Johnson's trilogy in doubt. Moving away from Star Wars as a result, Johnson began working on the Knives out trilogy for Netflix. Despite claims from Kathleen Kennedy and Rian Johnson that the trilogy will happen as soon as the latter finishes his work with Netflix, it doesn't seem hopeful. Lucasfilm has proven to be reactive to fan protests since operating under Disney's direction, making the chances of a figure as controversial as Rian Johnson returning to Disney less likely. Star Wars unfortunately thin.

Star Wars Trilogy by Simon Kinberg
The most recently announced Star Wars films
In November 2024, the Star Wars the fandom was hit by big news: Simon Kinberg is developing a Star Wars trilogy. Rumors arose between these three films being Episodes X, XI and XII, or simply another independent trilogy of stories devoid of connections to the Skywalker Saga. Regardless, it appears the reports are true and Kinberg's series is underway.
As the most recent announcement on this list, Kinberg's trilogy already has more credibility than Johnson's trilogy, Landoor the films in development from Levy and Waititi. Lucasfilm and Disney wouldn't allow these rumors and reports to circulate if they weren't true, which means the likelihood of this coming to fruition is, for the first time, quite high. 2025 will, without a doubt, be a great year to confirm or condemn whether Kingberg's films will flourish, but, at this moment, they cannot be discarded like some other projects prospected in a galaxy far, far away.

Rogue Squadron
Patty Jenkins' Long-Awaited Film Has New Hope
If this list had been written a year ago, Rogue Squadron would come in last place in terms of ranking the probability of this happening. However, the long-dormant film based on Star Wars video games received new hope in March 2024. Rogue Squadron was first announced to be in development by director Patty Jenkins and was set to be the next Star Wars movie after The Rise of Skywalker. After a troubled initial production schedule Rogue Squadron it was repeatedly delayed until it was shelved indefinitely, which many thought would mean it would never see the light of day.

That being said, in March 2024, Patty Jenkins revealed the Collider that she and Lucasfilm had rekindled their initial agreement shortly before the WGA 2023 attacks took place. Jenkins claimed this meant she was back working Rogue Squadron and intended to deliver a script to Lucasfilm. This was a result of James Gunn's new look DC Universe, which removed Jenkins' commitment to work on Wonder Woman 3. With the film dead, Jenkins turned his attention to Star Warsdoing Rogue Squadron more likely to happen than it has been in years.

Rey’s “New Jedi Order” movie
The first of four likely Star Wars films
The rest of this list consists of Star Wars films that have at least a 65% chance of happening. As far as Rey Skywalker's “New Jedi Order” story goes, this Star Wars The film hits this mark well. It's simply more likely that the film will happen than not, given the huge importance of its announcement, the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey, and the hiring of Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy as director. Admittedly, the loss of Steven Knight as the film's screenwriter has hurt hopes of it happening as early as 2026, but it should still see the light of day.
3
Film “Rise of the Jedi”, by James Mangold
The Jedi Prequel Movie Could Arrive Sooner Rather Than Later
Before Steven Knight's departure from Rey's “New Jedi Order” project, it would have ranked higher than James Mangold's “Dawn of the Jedi” film. Instead, this development, as well as some rumors that have been circulating, have changed in his favor. Mangold was announced as the writer and director of this film, set 25,000 years earlier Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, at the same time Rey's return was confirmed. This came with the caveat, however, that Mangold would have to finish the work in Indiana Jones 5 and A complete stranger first.
After work was completed on these two projects, it was up in the air whether Mangold would work on his “Dawn of the Jedi” film first or the DCU film. Swamp Thing. Rumors in late 2024 claimed that Mangold chose Star Wars as your next project which, when combined with the addition of AndorBeau Willimon, as screenwriter, makes this film more likely than ever to actually happen. Hopefully some concrete information that Mangold will be filming this next film will be provided in 2025. Until then, the signs look promising.

Dave Filoni's New Republic Movie
The lack of updates doesn't hurt this film's chances of coming to fruition
Ironically, the film Dave Filoni announced alongside “Dawn of the Jedi” and “New Jedi Order” has received the fewest concrete updates, but is still the most likely to happen of the three. The reason for this is Filoni's great importance to Lucasfilm as of late. In 2023, Filoni was named Creative Director at Lucasfilm and went on to direct most creative projects, from TV projects such as The Mandalorian and Ahsoka to Star Wars films like the story of the New Republic that he revealed he was writing.
Filoni isn't going anywhere and neither are his stories…
Filoni's work has also been mostly praised by critics and fans, including his recent work in live-action and animated projects. So Filoni isn't going anywhere and neither are his stories. This film was said to culminate the events of Star Wars' New Republic timeline, stemming from another upcoming film and Ahsoka season 2. After Filoni finishes production on the latter, work will undoubtedly begin on his first directorial Star Wars feature film.

The Mandalorian and Grogu
The Next Theatrical Star Wars Movie Is a Guarantee
Most likely next Star Wars movie to happen is The Mandalorian and Grogu. Announced in January 2023, The Mandalorian and GroguProduction has been incredibly smooth, with filming wrapping in December 2024. Post-production has already begun and the film is on track to meet its May 2026 release date. With such a smooth production, The Mandalorian and Grogu It seems strange, but it will start Star Wars back on the big screen, seven years after the franchise's hiatus began.
