AladdinThe genius of is getting a new imagination in a gender-swap cosplay. Aladdin was originally a 2D Disney animated film released in 1992. It featured the late comedian and actor Robin Williams as the iconic blue genie who sings “Friend Like Me” and grants the titular character three wishes. Aladdin was followed by a 1994 TV series as well as film sequels The Return of Jafar and Aladdin and the King of Thieves. In 2019, Disney made a live-action version of Aladdin.
More than three decades later AladdinIn the initial release of, a new gender-swapped genie cosplay was revealed.
From @missjazminadart shows a woman as the genius. Although she has fuller hair than the animated version of Williams, she wears a high ponytail similar to the original. She wears a stunning gold top to match the jewelry on her wrists and neck. Its waistband is red, mirroring the original. The first image shows her in a fluffy white cloud with a light bulb at the bottom of the photo, implying her exit from said light bulb.
What does this mean for Aladdin
Aladdin didn’t have a female genie
So far, both main representations of genius in Aladdin were played by men. In the animated version, the voice acting role went to Williams, and in the 2019 live-action remake, the character was played by Will Smith. This cosplay provides an alternate version of the genie that has been portrayed most often in the classic story. It’s interesting to see how the cosplayer borrows elements of the animated film’s look and at the same time makes it her own.
As for the real Aladdin series, there are currently no plans to change the genius character’s gender. The live-action version of the 2019 film was a box office success, grossing more than $1 billion over the course of its run. Because of this success, Disney confirmed Aladdin 2 in 2020. However, it has not been confirmed whether Smith would return to his genie role. Technically, this leaves the option open for another actor, who could be a woman, to take on the role of the genie.
Our take on a gender-swapped Aladdin
Classic gender-swapping characters are common now
Given Smith’s relatively recent controversies surrounding the Oscar slapping incident, the prospect of the actor returning to Aladdin 2 looks thinner. As a result, the option to change the representation of the genie is even more open than it would be otherwise. Making gender-swapped films and characters, as seen in 2016 Ghostbustersfor example, it is increasingly popular in Hollywood these days. This could point to a female genius coming into the world. Aladdin universe in the future, although as with many Disney live-action castings, this would almost certainly create controversy.
