Since Bird Ladyall Greta GerwigHis films have been adaptations – including his upcoming reboot of The Chronicles of Narnia – so, after finishing your work in Narniashe should go back to telling original stories. After Bird Lady putting her on the map as one of cinema's most exciting new voices, Gerwig got the chance to adapt one of her favorite novels for the screen: Louisa May Alcott, Little Women. When this proved to be an even bigger box office success, she was given a blockbuster budget to direct Margot Robbie's film. Barbie film.
BarbieGerwig's massive box office success, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2023, has secured Gerwig one of Hollywood's most sought-after directors. Next up, she's adapting another of her literary favorites – The Chronicles of Narnia – in a new franchise for Netflix. Gerwig has signed on to write and direct at least two films in the rebooted franchise. Two Narnia Gerwig's films are certainly an interesting prospect, but it means she will have directed five films and only one will be an original story. After leading Netflix Narnia reboot, Gerwig must finally return to the original narrative.
After Rebooting Narnia, Gerwig Should Tell Another Original Story
All of Gerwig's films since Lady Bird have been adaptations.
When Gerwig Chronicles of Narnia the reboot ends, it should go back to its roots and tell another original story like Bird Lady (and his previous co-written screenplays, Frances Ha and Lady America). Bird Lady it was the last time Gerwig created her own characters and told her own story; every film she has directed since then has been an adaptation. Little Women and The Chronicles of Narnia they are both attempts to translate a different writer's work to the screen. Gerwig is passionate about these stories, but ultimately they are not her stories.
There has been some debate about whether or not Barbie It's an adaptation. There was a small controversy when Barbie was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars. Technically, it's not based on any previous literary material, but the IP predates the film. The characters Barbie and Ken have existed in pop culture for decades, but not with the personalities Gerwig gave them. After restart NarniaGerwig should go back and tell an original story that is unquestionably her ownwith no prior source material to anchor it.
Lady Bird is still the best film Greta Gerwig has ever directed
It is deeply personal and idiosyncratic
Every film Gerwig has directed has been great. Little Women nails both Alcott's self-conscious deconstruction of clichéd romance narratives and the poignant emotionality of the Marches' sisterhood, with a refreshingly modern clip subverting the usual rigidity of period pieces. Barbie is both a crowd-pleasing comedy blockbuster, with plenty of absurd laughs and a thought-provoking meditation on existentialism. But as great as these films are, Gerwig still hasn't surpassed her first feature. Bird Lady it's one of the greatest directorial debuts ever made; instantly established Gerwig's soulful and idiosyncratic voice as a filmmaker.
Lady Bird captures the complexities of a mother-daughter relationship – the good, the bad and the ugly – more effectively and movingly than almost any other Hollywood production.
Bird Lady and Gerwig's most personal film. It's not directly autobiographical, but it's set in her hometown, it's filled with characters that reflect the people she grew up with, and it exudes her unique personality. It perfectly balances hilarious comedic moments with poignant dramatic moments. Bird Lady captures the complexities of a mother-daughter relationship – the good, the bad and the ugly – more effectively and movingly than almost any other Hollywood production. All of Gerwig's films have been brilliant, but she still hasn't surpassed her original coming-of-age masterpiece.
Gerwig's Next Original Film Could Be a Spiritual Lady Bird Sequel
Gerwig said she wants to make “A Sacramento Film Quartet”
If and when Gerwig returns to the original narrative, her next original film could return to Sacramento for a spiritual sequel to Bird Lady. In February 2018, Gerwig appeared in an episode of The A24 podcast with Moonlight director Barry Jenkins. She said she still hasn't finished filming in Sacramento after Bird Lady; she wants to do “a quartet of Sacramento films”as spiritual successors of Bird Lady. This Sacramento quadrilogy would be inspired by Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan novels — a series of stories built around a specific location with a special place in the author's heart.
These spiritual sequelae to Bird Lady there would be no direct sequels bringing back Saoirse Ronan as Christine McPherson; would be separate stories with a similar tone and style, chronicling the lives of similar characters living in Sacramento. Bird Lady it's just a Sacramento perspective; Greta Gerwig saw his hometown from many different angles. Bird Lady explored Sacramento through the eyes of a teenager who can't wait to leave and go to college out of state. The next would be a successful filmmaker returning to her hometown as an adult, after years away.
