After 84 Years, Superman Lore Redefines an Iconic Character (and Metropolis Just Got the Hero It Really Needs)

Notice! Spoilers ahead for Action Comics #1075!An underrated character in Superman The myth finally had the chance to do something really good for Metropolis. Clark Kent and his Kryptonian family may have real superpowers, but the Man of Steel’s former boss just gained a surprising amount of political power.

Perry White had to resign as editor-in-chief of The Daily Planet after suffering a stroke (caused by Lex Luthor, making the world forget Superman’s secret identity). While Lois Lane stepped in to keep the newspaper running, Perry found an important calling and began running for mayor of Metropolis. Now, after an arduous and enduring campaign, Perry is embarking on a new chapter in his life.

Perry White wins race for DC mayor

In Action Comics #1075 story “Memory Lane” by Joshua Williamson, Jon Bogdanove, Norm Rampund, Hi-Fi and Dave Sharpe, it’s the eve of the mayoral election and Perry is having trouble sleeping. The polls are as tight as they can be and experts have no faith in White winning. Wanting to clear his head, Perry takes a walk down the street remembering his history with Metropolis including every time he witnessed Superman in action. Before long, White returns to the offices of The Daily Planet, thinking about when he ran the place.

But Perry isn’t the only one working until midnight, as Clark is also in the newspaper office finishing up a story. Perry asks where the current editor-in-chief of The Daily Planet is and Clark covers for Lois (who is doing superhero business as Superwoman) by saying that she is sleeping. Perry tells Clark about how he misses the Planet and the doubts he has now that he’s about to become the city’s mayor. Perry tells Superman he’s not sure if he’s ready to stop writing about Metropolis and become responsible for it.

… Election Day has arrived in Metropolis and White sets out to face his future.

As Perry finishes venting to Clark, the sun rises and Election Day arrives in Metropolis and White sets out to face her future. The day ends and the polls close and Perry and his wife wait for the results to come back. Lois stops by Perry’s campaign headquarters with a copy of the latest issue of The Daily Planet, wanting Perry to be the first person to see the headline. The people spoke and Perry White was elected mayor of Metropolis in a landslide victory.

Perry White could take Metropolis into a new era

The Superman Family and Mayor White are what the city needs

This was not an easy campaign for White. In addition to recovering from a stroke, White had to briefly suspend his campaign when Superman was injured during a battle with the Chained Ones. Not to mention that White was running against Garon Blake, a far-right extremist supported by the anti-alien movement Blue Earth (and that’s not even mentioning Brainiac’s devastating attack on Metropolis during “House of Brainiac”). But despite the obstacles in his path, White remained steadfast and true to his message of hope, inspired by the example set by Superman.

Metropolis has never exactly been a hotbed of corruption like Gotham, although it has had some unsavory figures in the mayor’s office (like Bradford Sackett, a puppet controlled by Lex Luthor in his villainous days). But the city never had anyone who truly saw Superman for what he commanded. Perry was never one for physical strength, but he was always a bastion of integrity. Now the house of Superman has a leader as dedicated to truth and justice as the Man of Steel himself.and they can do a lot of good together.

…White remained steadfast and true to his message of hope…

Superman has already considerably improved Metropolis by working with Lex Luthor, who seems to have really turned the page. But now Superman has an ally in the most powerful politician in the city, and he can help bring about changes that can actually improve other people’s lives. That doesn’t mean Metropolis doesn’t always be in danger, but with a person of strong moral character like Perry White in charge, Superman’s city couldn’t be in better hands.

The future is brighter than ever for Superman City

Perry White is exactly where he needs to be

Some may have thought that Perry would eventually return to The Daily Planet, but Lois actually got to run the paper, and frankly, she deserves to be editor-in-chief. And Perry has been around long enough to need a new challenge, and what better challenge than being in charge of a city regularly threatened by aliens and other supervillain threats? It could be a new direction for Superman former boss, but Perry White is definitely the right person for the job.
