Adam Sandler’s disastrous Pac-Man movie, with 18% on Rotten Tomatoes, will finally be rescued thanks to this video game show

Adam Sandler Pixels was a critical disaster, despite featuring amusing references to Pac-Manbut the next iteration of the latter could redeem the former when Secret level arrives on streaming platforms. Pixels was released in 2015 and attempted to tell an interesting and comical story about aliens who invaded Earth using the forms of iconic video game characters who were found in a time capsule in space. Although this concept and Pixels’ cast of characters was promising, the film did not meet expectations. Plus fun references, including PixelsPac-Man cameo from the creator, the film abandoned fun nostalgia for exaggerated and irritating humor.

This took Pixels to become a critical failure, with the film currently holding an 18% score from professional reviews recorded on Rotten Tomatoes. As one of the few different interpretations involving an iconic game like Pac-Manmany are wondering where the next one will come from. One of them is Amazon Prime Secret level video game anthology series; Interestingly, the Pac-Man episode of Secret level was teased by the show’s creators, promising a strange, perhaps even frightening, redemption of the iconic character’s latest portrayal in film and TV.

Secret Level’s Pac-Man Episode Looks Incredibly Fun (and Weird)

What could the secret level hold for Pac-Man?

Speaking exclusively to Screen speech at New York Comic-Con 2024, the executive producer and supervising director of Secret levelDave Wilson, teased the adaptation of the show Pac-Man. Of course, it is common knowledge that Pac-Man it has little narrative value as an arcade game, making the anthology episode based on the IP all the more intriguing. However, what was promised by Wilson may not be what many expected:

“You’ve seen Pac-Man, it’s weird – and I think in the best way possible… look what Victor and Alfredo, the directors of Headless, did… And I remember when that story reel came from them… It was like, ‘Holy shit, this is amazing.’ It’s so strange. It felt like we were destroying people’s childhoods with that episode… They referenced Mandy. Like, Mandy and Pac-Man don’t seem like a good fit as a creative touchstone, but it was amazing.”

As is evident from Wilson’s comments, it is safe to assume that Secret levelof Pac-Man episode will be incredibly different from anything that has come before. The reference to Mandy raises eyebrows given its nature as a psychedelic revenge thriller starring Nicolas Cage. Somehow, the creators of Secret level mixed this violent strangeness with the last element of Pac-Man. Overall, this looks overly appealing and strange, but incredibly exciting before Secret levellaunch.

Secret level will be released on December 10, 2024, on Amazon Prime.

With Secret level releasing a Pac-Man adaptation, Pixels will no longer be the only strange interpretation of the iconic franchise. However, the benefit Secret levelThe iteration will be very interesting. As alluded to thanks to the exploration of Pixels‘, Adam Sandler’s film failed to capture the video game’s iconic nostalgia in a way that worked. It seems that Secret level we will do this by going beyond what was considered possible from an adaptation of Pac-Manrather than the more surface-level exploration found in Pixelshopefully to better critical reception.

In Pixels, invading aliens misinterpret classic 1980s arcade games as declarations of war and attack Earth in the form of various characters from the game, such as Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Peter Dinklage, Josh Gad, Michelle Monaghan and Brian Cox star in this 2015 sci-fi action comedy directed by Chris Columbus.
