In the main DC Universe, Selina Kyle and Bruce Wayne only met after becoming more than just normal civilians. The exact circumstances of the encounter are ambiguous. During Tom King’s run on Batman title, Selina remembers being on the street when Bruce started fighting crime and hadn’t even become Batman yet. Batman remembers this differently. He believes they met on a boat, where Selina was planning to steal something, and she was already Catwoman by this point. Iin the Absolute Universe, as revealed in Absolute Batman #2, they knew each other long before.
While this new reunion may seem like a small change, it’s actually huge. When Bruce and Selina meet as Batman and Catwoman, they have already decided who they are. Most of them have settled into the type of person they will be and the things they believe in, making their relationship truly complicated. But in this universe, Bruce and Selina met as children. As Snyder says, “They met when they were cruel and uncertain,“giving them both much more knowledge about each other when they realize who they have become as adults.
Batman and Catwoman’s relationship is complicated in every universe
There is more news for Bat/Cat in the Absolute Universe
The big problem with Batman and Catwoman’s relationship in the Prime Universe is that they try to overcome their differences in beliefs. Bruce is a rich kid who grew up in a luxurious mansion and believes that all crime should be eradicated. Selina is someone who grew up in poverty and believes that sometimes the law has to be broken to survive. In the Absolute Universe, they both grew up in poverty and grew up together. It seems that no matter what universe they are in, Batman and Catwoman relationship will always be complicated.
