If Jacob wasn't so sensitive and serious, it wouldn't be so strange for him to live with the brusque, tough-talking Melissan. Similarly, Melissa's friendship with Barbara is unexpected precisely because of the differences between the street-smart teacher and her soft-spoken, church-going best friend. This makes one season 4 twist particularly surprising because it highlights an unexpected character similarity.

Since the series began, Abbott ElementaryJanine and Ava have always been at odds. Janine is a sincere, sweet, mild-mannered teacher who is defined by her cautious attitude and her wide-eyed idealism. Both Ava and Janine are uncomfortable by their parallel thinking and, in a classic sitcom gag, the duo even end up speaking the same lines in unison for a moment. The gag emphasizes just how much Ava and Janine have grown and changed over the years, to the point that the two characters aren't necessarily all that different anymore.
