Warning: This article contains spoilers for Wicked.Evil continued to be one of the most successful films of the year, with solid box office success during the holidays, bolstered by the great word of mouth the film received when it was released. With Evil: forever officially revealing its title and release date, all eyes are now on the sequel to find the same level of success as Evilstellar reviews and box office returns. While Evil makes a number of major changes to the musical, there is one small change that makes ForeverThe work as a sequence is a little more difficult.
EvilThe characters are definitely the film's biggest success, with Elphaba and Glinda becoming even more iconic characters than in the musical, and Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande's performances standing out as the film's most highly rated aspects. The longer running time of the film, as opposed to the musical, means that these characters can be explored in even more depth, but one aspect of Elphaba was left aside – in relation to her wardrobe.
Elphaba is more stylish in Wicked than in the first half of the musical
Elphaba from the film is very fashionable when compared to the musical
Elphaba's fashion comes up a bit in the film, as she dresses differently than the rest of the family. EvilStudents and staff at Shiz University, which eventually culminates in the iconic witch's hat given to her by Glinda. However, when it comes to our real-world fashion sense, nothing Elphaba wears during the film actually looks bad, it's just different from what the people of Oz see as good fashion. This contrasts with the musical where even though she doesn't look horrible, she wears a somewhat unflattering blazer and skirt before transitioning into some very simple black dresses.
She returns after being labeled a fugitive in an incredible, sparkling black dress with some purple accents, signifying her big change from the first half.
In the film, Elphaba wears two beautiful textured black dresses and an elegant blazer, as well as a school uniform that also looks good on her. Even before she gets the cape and fully commits to the classic Wicked Witch of the West look, she has a solid fashion sense. On the other hand, in the musical, Elphaba's look remains quite mundane until the second actwhen she returns after being labeled a fugitive in an incredible, sparkling black dress with some purple accents, signifying her big change from the first half.
Elphaba's wardrobe in Wicked Part Two better be amazing
Wicked: For Good has to up the ante even more than the musical
This fact then becomes a problem when the musical obviously uses Elphaba's different style to enhance her transformationfrom the simple student wearing simple clothes, to the Wicked Witch wearing an incredible and sparkling dress. EvilElphaba changed the character's iconic look, so the sequel will need to create something truly unique and interesting to maintain the same sense of transformation that the series achieved. With how good the costumes are Evilthey absolutely have a chance to succeed, it will just require something totally exceptional.
