The Dark Tower is coming to Netflix
Why you should watch it after its release
Seven years after its controversial release, The Dark Tower is coming to Netflix. Inspired by King’s books, the film follows Roland Deschain (Idris Elba) as he leads a young boy (Tom Taylor) on a mission against the shadowy Walter Padick (Matthew McConaughey). It was supposed to be the first in a series, but poor responses from critics led to its eventual rejection. Now the film will be Coming to Netflix December 1stwhere it will join several other Stephen King films, including Geraldo’s game (2017).
Mike Flanagan is now developing his own Dark Tower adaptation, which should be more faithful to the books. It will come on the heels of a film that grossed just 16% on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer and 44% on the audience-led Popcornmeter. The film was criticized for its Limited runtime of just 95 minutesits endless exposition and strange pacing. However, despite all the criticism, it’s still worth watching, even as Flanagan tries to create a better representation.
Elba and McConaughey deliver inspiring performances and their dynamic is the film’s saving grace. Anyone who enjoys either acting style should find the film a fun adventure. It also serves as a glimpse of the Dark Tower world. This could provide a warm, nostalgic reminder or an early entry into an expansive universe, depending on the viewer’s familiarity. It’s not a perfect film, but it’s still exciting enough to watch on Netflix when it finally comes out, and it’s short enough that it hardly takes up much time or space.
What ScreenRant said about The Dark Tower:
In short, The Dark Tower is not the film that fans of King’s novels have been waiting decades to see on the big screen. With a new story, condensed mythology, underdeveloped characters, and a rather simplistic Hero’s Journey arc – save the Tower, save the world – The Dark Tower doesn’t actively improve on the source material, and fans of King’s universe will likely find it lacking. On its own, The Dark Tower is a decent fantasy action adventure that provides an enjoyable experience for casual viewers. However, the film never lived up to the expectations set by its source material and long development process, failing to capture the magic of King’s novels despite the efforts of Arcel and the film’s screenwriters.
