There’s a line from the first Cutting thorns and roses book that has intrigued readers for years, and Maas has yet to reveal how this might impact the rest of the story. During Feyre’s first few days at the Spring Court, Tamlin, during a discussion about Fae culture, asks her: “Didn’t your mother tell you anything about us?” This could just be an innocent question about Fae bedtime stories told to children, but the way Tamlin phrases the question, specifically about his mother, suggests a history between the two characters.
The question was also purposely phrased in relation only to Feyre’s mother, disregarding the fact that her father could have equally told his children stories about the Fae. Because of this, theories suggest Feyre’s mother may have had previous experience in the Fae courts, or was likely the Fae herself.. Amarantha also mentions in a later scene that Feyre’s name is derived from a very ancient Fae dialect – a name that Feyre’s mother wouldn’t know if she were human.

Knowing that it’s possible her mother was Fae, it’s strange that Maas hasn’t yet established a connection between the Archeron family and Prythian. Given that Feyre’s mother passed away 11 years before the events of Cutting thorns and roses start, the only details readers can glean from her character are those from Feyre and Nesta’s memories. Mrs. Archeron is described as cold and frivolous, and we learn in A Court of Silver Flames that she divided her attention unequally between her daughters – favoring time with Nesta and preparing her to secure power and wealth through marriage.

In addition to the few characteristics collected from Feyre and Nesta, Maas has revealed very little about her mother’s background or family. And from these brief descriptions, it is evident that their mother is extremely unhappy living in human lands – perhaps because she has experienced and knows that a better life awaits her in Prythian. The Archeron sisters have always been something of an anomaly when it comes to humans interacting with the magical world of the Fae – and on several occasions have possessed abilities that should not be accessible to someone with pure human lineage. For example, throughout the Cutting thorns and roses series, both Feyre and Nesta prove to be much stronger than most humans. Each with incredible talents for both interacting with magical creatures and resisting Fae glamours, respectively.
These abilities, although for some they can be explained as a natural instinct, currently contradict everything that has been described about the Fae so far in Sarah J. Maas’ books. If Maas were to reveal that the Archeron are descended from a lineage of ancient Fae, it would be would help explain the inconsistencies found in the series’ lore regarding the Fae and humans. With so many coincidences surrounding the Archeron and the Prythian – and Elain’s book on the horizon – it’s likely that Maas will reveal more about her family lineage in the future.
