Fruits Basket may be a great romance anime, but that’s not why I like it

I’m a big fan of the romance anime genre. I’ve watched so many different series that fall under this category and I’m always looking to discover something new, but there is one series that I admittedly have a soft spot for and continue to watch over and over again. Among these stories Fruit Basket seems unique to me and even after watching many other romance anime, I still haven’t found anything that quite replicates its magic.

Fruit Basket really romantic and touching, contains one of the cutest couples in anime, Kyo and Tohru. Their story is beautiful, meaningful and interesting, and it showcases two broken, grieving people learning to love themselves and each other despite the challenges life throws at them.

I really can’t get enough of the adorable interactions between Tohru, Kyo, and the other couples in the movie. Fruit basket, from Hatsuharu and Rin to Yuki and Machi are almost as touching to watch. However, while it may seem shocking, the romance of the series is not the main reason I love the series. Fruit Basket so much.

Fruit Basket Explores other types of relationships besides romantic ones

The series proves that all connections are important, not just those between couples like Tohru and Kyo.

Fruit Basket portrays romantic relationships very well, covering all the emotions and experiences associated with falling in love, exploring many different love stories. But one of the things that makes me enjoy this series is how… equal time and attention is given to platonic and familial relationships too much. Fruit Basket does not prioritize one type of relationship over another and explores different ways of communicating between people. Some romance anime fall into the trap of only treating romantic relationships as important, allowing the main characters’ other friends and family to fall through the cracks and be quickly forgotten.

Connected

I was pleasantly surprised by how the relationships within the Sohma family, Tohru’s relationship with her mother, Tohru’s relationship with her best friends Saki and Arisa, and Kyo and Yuki’s relationship were fleshed out and played an important role in the story. All these bonds are issued as just as important to the whole story as the main coupleKyo and Tohru. By offering such a comprehensive view, I found that Fruit Basket to be more intimate and soulful on many levels as it embraces all types of connections, many of which remind me of relationships in my own life.

Family and platonic relationships are just as important to the plot as romantic ones.

Fruit Basket Explores the relationships within the Sohma family and how the curse of the Zodiac affects everyone.

Still from the series “Fruit Basket” “Who are you?”

One of the plot points of the story includes The Sohma family lifts the Zodiac curse because of this, each of them turns into an animal after hugging a person of the opposite sex. The curse had a very negative impact on their lives and strained relationships within the family. For example, members of the Sohma family resented Akito, the head of the family, due to her controlling and abusive behavior. Eventually, Tohru and the others confronted her and she began to show remorse for her harmful actions, but this is just one example Fruit Basket Discovering interpersonal issues not related to romance.

Kyo and Yuki hated each other, fighting bitterly at every turn. As the story progresses, they learn to love each other and make amends by putting past hurts aside and truly accepting each other. However, the series is definitely not all doom and gloom and features many happy family moments, with the Sohmas enjoying a relaxing beach day or simply spending time at home in each other’s joyful company. Thanks to these varied stories filled with many emotions, Fruit Basket reveals the value of family relationshipsno matter how emotionally and difficult they may be at times.

By exploring human connection in all its forms, the series becomes more interesting

True friendship also plays an important role in this story, reminding me of my own important friendships.

Fruit Basket collected all together Cropped

Fruit Basket it is a story about families overcoming their conflicts and past wounds.just like it is a love story between Kyo and Tohru. The anime also delves into Tohru’s family relationships, showing her strong bond with her grandfather, with whom she lived for some time, as well as her deep grief after losing her mother. The flashbacks give viewers a clear picture of how strong Kyoko and her daughter’s relationship was, and the series explores how much such a life-changing loss affected a teenager like Tohru, who continued to miss his mother dearly.

Connected

Finally, the importance of genuine, supportive friendships is a key theme V Fruit basket. Arisa and Saki, Tohru’s best friends, are ride-or-die friends who supported Tohru after her mother’s death and her attempts to break the Sohma family curse. Tohru also became best friends with everyone in the Sohma family, from Momiji to Ayame. She didn’t just maintain a relationship with Kyo and ignore the other Sohmas, she developed a genuine relationship with every member of the family. Tohru’s quest to get to know the people around her makes the series more interesting as it depicts many different connections beyond just romantic ones.

Other relationships in Fruit Basket Helped me appreciate romance even more

Exploring the other relationships in their lives made Tohru and Kyo feel like compelling and realistic characters.

Kyo smiles as she holds Tohru's hand from the fruit basket.

I was pleasantly surprised by the accurate picture of life Fruit Basket written by delving into the complexities of human relationships and the different forms they can take. From minor family relationships to love triangles, the series covers it all and offers fans from all walks of life storylines they can relate to personally. Relationships between Kyo And Toru is one of the most striking moments of history, but since Fruit Basket did such a wonderful job showing the other relationships in their lives, I appreciated their romance and understood them even better as people than I might otherwise have.
