THE Scream killers continue to build following Scream 6and the The Ghostface mask has been used by almost 20 different people. Over the course of the six films, an impressive number of characters have worn the Ghostface mask, which is only added to the franchise’s TV series. While many got their hands dirty with the murders, others acted more as mentors or distractions. Scream VI Here’s the fun of looking at the film’s set and trying to decide who plays Ghostface before the final unmasking reveals everything.
Wes Craven Scream presented the world with a new face of horror. The villain wasn’t a maniac who targeted random people and kept returning – like icons Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, or Craven’s own Freddy Kreuger. Instead of, Ghostface was the disguise used for assassins on a specific mission, which invariably ended up with Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) as the target. Each Scream the film contained a large mystery surrounding Ghostface’s identity. THE Scream 6 The reveal of the Ghostface killer reminds audiences how much fun it is to see which actor or actors are the Scream killers.

Billy Loomis – Scream (1996)
Played by Skeet Ulrich
Billy Loomis is introduced as Sidney Prescott’s dark and brooding boyfriend in the first film. He was the stereotypical bad boy in the first Scream film, taking him to a new level after he shockingly revealed himself as the Ghostface killer alongside Stu Macher.
Billy planned to kill Sidney and frame Sid’s father for the murders, including that of Maureen Prescott. Billy blamed Maureen for pushing his mother away because the woman was having an affair with Billy’s father. Sidney managed to escape Billy’s attack a few times and ended up killing him with the help of Gale and Randy.
Billy remains one of the most effective Ghostface killers in the world. Scream franchise because of how obvious it seemed at first. The film, well aware of the tropes, knew that audiences would be suspicious of Billy from the beginning and embraced it. Billy looked so guilty that the audience started looking elsewhere only for the final reveal to sell the surprise.
18
Stu Macher – Scream (1996)
Played by Matthew Lillard
Stu Macher played Sidney Prescott’s goofy friend, but never seemed threatening. It was a complete surprise that Stu served as Billy’s Ghostface accomplice in his murderous mask, acting as the second of Scream killers in the original film.
Stu cited “peer pressure” as the reason he agreed to help Billy get revenge on Sidney. Sidney used Stu’s strong-willed nature to antagonize him and later managed to kill him while Billy was unconscious. However, Scream 6 potentially confirms Stu’s theory, which suggests he is still alive.
Once the truth is revealed, Matthew Lillard leans into Stu’s unhinged nature, adding a wild component to the climax.
Stu is another shocking revelation simply by virtue of being the first time the public was confronted with the idea of two killers. It’s a brilliant way to play with genre expectations and hide Stu’s revelation while also casting doubt on Billy. Once the truth is revealed, Matthew Lillard leans into Stu’s unhinged nature, adding a wild component to the climax.
17
Sidney Prescott – Scream (1996)
Played by Neve Campbell
Sidney was not one of the Scream murderers, but she wore the mask in a brief scene as she turned the tables on her attackers. After Billy and Stu revealed their plan, Gale caused a distraction that led to Sidney escaping. Billy was furious that she had run away, so he went through the house looking for her. When he opened the closet door, Sidney jumped out wearing the Ghostface costume and stabbed Billy several times with an umbrella, a move that really hurt ScreamSkeet Ulrich.
THE Scream The films love to subvert tropes, including the cliché girl endings Sidney plays throughout the franchise. The moment she turns the tables on the would-be killers is a crowd-pleasing scene that helps solidify her as one of horror’s most iconic heroes and the franchise’s most important character.
16
Mrs. Loomis – Scream 2 (1997)
Played by Laurie Metcalf
When a copycat Scream killer goes after Sidney at her college, the mystery of Ghostface’s identity begins again. Ms. Loomis disguised herself as a journalist when the media stormed the campus. At the end of the film, it was revealed that she orchestrated the second wave of murders because Billy was her son. To avenge his death, Mrs. Loomis hired Mickey to commit the murders. She was later killed by Sidney and Cotton.
Despite the fact that Mrs. Loomis isn’t mentioned before her reveal, it’s an extremely shocking moment that the film covers up well. The introduction of new characters that blend in with the survivors from the original film can sometimes make it obvious that they are the killers. However, Mrs. Loomis was a small enough character to work while also being a fun reference to the original Friday the 13th killer revelation.
15
Mickey Altieri – Scream 2 (1997)
Played by Timothy Olyphant
Mickey was a close friend of Sidney’s in college. Turns out he was actually a vicious young man that Mrs. Loomis met online. She paid his tuition in exchange for him carrying out the copycat murders as Ghostface. Mickey kept his end of the bargain and shared that he wanted to get caught to become famous. Mrs. Loomis then turned on him after her motive was revealed. He ultimately died from multiple gunshot wounds at the hands of Mrs. Loomis, Gale, and Sidney.
Although Timothy Olyphant has a lot of fun embracing Mickey’s villainous side in the climax, the character simply doesn’t stand out enough in the rest of the film to make his reveal impactful. He is present in several scenes, but is not involved enough in the story. However, his motivation of wanting to go to trial and blaming the movies for his actions is interesting.
14
Roman Bridger – Scream 3 (2000)
Played by Scott Foley
Not only was it revealed that Roman Bridger was the Scream 3 killer, but he was also the brains behind the previous two films. Roman was Maureen Prescott’s son, but she wanted nothing to do with him. Roman’s jealousy of the Prescott family drove him to revengeso he filmed Maureen’s affairs and showed them to Billy. He then gave Billy the idea to carry out Ghostface’s first murders, which in turn led to his mother’s involvement in the crime. Scream 2. Sidney finally discovered his half-brother’s murderous plan.
There are too many silly elements in his story to make it interesting.
Roman is the only Ghostface killer who works alone but it is often seen as one of the weakest in the franchise. There are too many silly elements in his story to make it interesting. The half-brother’s secret revelation feels like something out of a soap opera, his perfect voice replication technology is ridiculous, and the revelation that he was behind Billy’s revenge is a disappointing portrayal of a better Ghostface killer.
13
Jill Roberts – Scream 4 (2011)
Played by Emma Roberts
Jealousy must be present in the Prescott family because it became the main motivation for Jill’s role as the Scream 4 assassin. She was Sidney’s distant cousin and the target of the new murders. It turns out that Jill craved the attention that Sidney always received, so she organized a murder spree for her mother and friends. Jill thought she killed Sidney, but she was wrong, so they had a final confrontation at the hospital. Although the original plan had Jill survive Scream 4Sidney finally kills his younger cousin.
The fact that Jill is the villain that Sidney needs to defeat is a huge reversal of those expectations.
Although there is a somewhat mixed answer when it comes to Scream 4 and its killer reveal, it’s actually a lot of fun when you consider it’s toying with the idea of rebooting the franchise. Going to the movie, Many suspected that Jill and the younger cast would take over the franchise from the original heroes. The fact that Jill is the villain that Sidney needs to defeat is a huge reversal of those expectations.
12
Charlie Walker – Scream 4 (2011)
Played by Rory Culkin
Charlie played Jill’s secret boyfriend, who helped with Jill Scream 4 assassination plan. He portrayed the second Ghostface to make it appear that Jill was also being targeted at the time. Although Jill wanted the entire world’s attention, Charlie appears to have been purely motivated by wanting Jillsomething she handled effortlessly.
After they revealed themselves to Sidney, Charlie and Jill were planning to hurt each other to act like they were victims instead of Scream killers. Instead, Jill realized she would rather be the sole survivor, so she killed Charlie.
Charlie is one of the most pathetic Ghostface killers, which is quite effective. Seen through his anger at trying to kill Kirby, Charlie has a lot of repressed emotions towards girls, so it’s satisfying to see Jill use that against him, even though she’s just as evil. For someone obsessed with horror films, he certainly didn’t see this obvious twist coming.
11
Amber Freeman – Scream (2022)
Played by Mikey Madison
The first killer in 2022 Scream it was amber, Tara’s friend who lived in Stu Macher’s old house. The location led to his obsession with the original Woodsboro Massacreand in turn, the Stab film franchise.
In recent years, Amber felt the franchise went off track and she wanted to give the series new material that honored the original. In doing so, she set up a chain of events that involved bringing back the legacy Scream characters, killing some of their friends, and framing Tara’s sister, Sam, for the murders because she is Billy Loomis’ daughter.
The reveal comes as a solid shock, as the audience initially doesn’t know what Amber’s motivations could be. There’s another lover angle to this murderous duo as well with Amber and Richie being a couple. Mikey Madison gives a chilling performance after the revelation and, interestingly, suffers a similar death to his role as a member of the Manson family in Once upon a time in Hollywood.
10
Richard “Richie” Kirsch – Scream (2022)
Played by Jack Quaid
Amber couldn’t do it all alone, so she enlisted the help of Richie, the second of two Scream killers. Although he was considered Sam’s loyal boyfriend he was actually a sadist Stab fan that Amber met on a subreddit. Also upset with the recent direction of the Stab films, Richie agreed to help Amber act out Scream Ghostface Murders in 2022 to Fix the Franchise. In reality, he personified the toxic fanbase he claimed to hate. Sam later killed him after a one-on-one confrontation.
Jack Quaid gives one of the best performances as a Ghostface killer. Juxtaposed with Billy Loomis’ bad boy boyfriend in the original film, Richie seems like a goofy, genuinely likable guy for most of the film. Quaid makes the audience hope that Richie isn’t the killer, but ultimately makes him memorable.
9
Piper Shaw – Scream: The TV Series, Season 1
Played by Amelia Rose Blaire
Initially posing as a podcaster investigating the new murders in Lakewood, Piper Shaw was eventually revealed to be the daughter of Brandon James, the original Lakewood serial. Scream assassin. Piper’s main motivation for the murder was jealousy towards her half-sister Emma Duvall.who grew up with her mother while Piper was given up for adoption. However, as she prepares to reveal another shocking aspect of her murder spree, she is shot dead by Emma.
Piper is an interesting character who builds on the legacy of Scream franchise. It’s pretty clear that she’s intended to be a TV show version of Gale Weathers, with his nosy and aggressive journalism tactics seeming very reminiscent. Making her the killer worked well with this idea, while she also connects to past killers like Roman and Jill as a member of the last girl’s revenge-seeking family.
8
Kieran Wilcox – Scream: The TV Series, Season 2
Played by Amadeus Serafini
Unbeknownst to the survivors of Piper’s massacre during Season 1 Keiran Wilcox was her secret lover and accomplice and probably the big secret she didn’t reveal before she was killed. Kieran helped Piper coordinate her deaths and sometimes posed as the killer when Piper was unable to do so.
After Piper ended up dead, an enraged Kieran embarked on a new murder spree in the Scream story of the season, but ended up being captured and imprisoned. He later died in prison after being killed by a different, unidentified Ghostface killer. Unfortunately, this storyline was dropped in the third season.
He also falls into the lover category, following Piper down this deadly path of twisted love.
Once again, this is a killer that ties into some of the tropes from the previous films. He’s a mysterious bad boy like Billy Loomis who is the new kid in town, making him seem too obvious to be the killer. He also falls into the lover category, following Piper down this deadly path of twisted love. However, the fact that he was killed by another killer and it doesn’t matter makes him feel like a lackluster entry into the Ghostface legacy.
7
Jamal Elliot – Scream: The TV Series, Season 3
Played by Tyga
Jamal’s Ghostface motif in Scream the third season was more common for Scream patterns of killers, arising from problems with their family, mainly one of your brothers assuming the identity of another deceased brother. Jamal was a time bomb waiting to explode by a calculating Beth. However, Jamal wasn’t bad like his accomplice, Bethleading him to reveal her identity to his brother and her to brutally kill him by stabbing him.
Jamal’s motivations for going on his murder spree were a bit too questionable for it to really make an impact. However, the identity reveal was an interesting addition to the franchise. As Jamal lies dying, another victim of the Ghostface killer, he reveals himself as the mastermind of the entire plan. It’s a surprising moment, but in the end it makes Jamal a less impressive killer.
6
Beth – Scream: The TV Series, Season 3
Played by Giorgia Whigham
Notably, this third and final Scream the season rebooted the series’ story, moving away from Lakewood. THE Scream the killers also wore the classic Ghostface mask from the films and were voiced in costume by Roger L. Jackson. A horror-obsessed goth with seemingly antisocial tendencies, Beth basically did what she did for fun and had no real motive for revenge like some of the other deaths in the franchise. She was killed by Kym in the end.
Beth fits into the franchise’s collection of other secondary Ghostface killers, like Mickey and Charlie, who support the main killers who have personal motivations. However, even though these two were eliminated by their partners when they no longer served a purpose, Beth was able to turn this trope on its head and kill Jamal. She is revealed to be a master manipulator and one of the most intelligent assassins in the series.
5
Detective Bailey – Scream VI (2023)
Played by Dermot Mulroney
However Scream 6 features more Ghostface Scream killers than any film in the franchise, Detective Bailey can be considered the main killer. Bailey is introduced as a police officer and the father of Sam’s roommate Quinn, who helps the group when Ghostface returns. However, it is finally revealed he is Richie’s father Scream 2022, looking to get revenge on Sam for killing his son. Bailey makes it a family affair, bringing her surviving children only to see them dead before Sam dons the Ghostface mask to finish Bailey off with a knife to the eye.
It’s interesting to have a killer who is much older than the main group of victims. Although Ms. Loomis falls into this category, Bailey is a much more active killer, earning one of the highest kill counts of Ghostface killers. Unfortunately, he also appears as a very predictable killer whose motivations are not very interesting due to having already seen his father as vengeful.
4
Ethan Landry – Scream VI (2023)
Played by Jack Champion
Ethan is introduced as one of Sam and Tara’s college friends and a bit of an outcast. Interestingly, after being absent from one of Ghostface’s major attacks, the group immediately suspects him of being the culprit. These instincts turned out to be correct, as Ethan reveals he is Ritchie’s younger brother. After being stabbed in the mouth by Tara, Ethan gets the distinction of getting the final scare when he tries to attack Sam and Tara only for Kirby to end up with the same TV that got Stu.
Adding a third killer to the list for Scream VI helped keep suspicion away from Ethanespecially with the rest of the characters already so suspicious of him. However, it also raises questions like why Ethan let Mindy live when he could have easily killed her and still protected her identity.
3
Quinn Bailey – Scream VI (2023)
Played by Liana Liberato
Quinn is introduced as Sam’s roommate in New York City and Detective Bailey’s daughter. However, the film tries to take her off the suspect list early when she is apparently killed by Ghostface (although the fact that it was an off-screen death doesn’t help). After revealing that she is alive, being one of the Scream murderers, and helping with his father’s revenge planQuinn actually dies when Sam shoots her in the head.
THE Scream the franchise has never been one for off-screen deaths, so something immediately feels off when Quinn is supposedly dispatched like this.
Quinn’s reputation as a Ghostface killer suffers due to how much the film put into the “twist” that she was still alive. THE Scream the franchise has never been one for off-screen deaths, so something immediately feels off when Quinn is supposedly dispatched like this. The character doesn’t have time to develop before leaving the film and the fact that she says “I Bet You Didn’t Expect That” when she reveals herself is particularly irritating given how obvious the reveal was.
2
Jason Carver – Scream VI (2023)
Played by Tony Revolori
Scream 6The opening scene plays with the audience’s expectations of the formula these films have established. After a young girl is killed by Ghostface, instead of going straight to the title, Ghostface removes his mask to reveal Jason Carver. The scene continues showing Jason, one of the Ghostface hopefuls. Scream killers along with his roommate Greg (who never gets the chance to put on the mask). His plan is to kill Sam and Tara in an attempt to finish Richie’s film. Instead, a rival Ghostface attacks him and stabs Jason to death. after discovering Greg’s dismembered body in the refrigerator.
Jason’s time as Ghostface is certainly short-lived, as it’s a memorable way to play against the formula of these films. Seeing Ghostface revealed in the film’s opening minutes immediately leaves audiences unsure of where the film is going. It also establishes the film’s true Ghostface as a more formidable killer.
1
Sam Carpenter – Scream VI (2023)
Played by Melissa Barrera
Following in the footsteps of Sidney Prescott, Scream 6the last girl Sam dons the Ghostface costume in the final act to take down Bailey. However, seeing Sam in the Ghostface mask has different connotations, as she is Billy Loomis’ daughter and has struggled with whether or not she has his killer instinct. In fact, Bailey refers to the mask as his birthright. Although she is hesitant to become the monster everyone thinks she is, she gets Tara’s approval to kill Bailey anyway.
Scream VI really delves into this struggle in Sam’s life with some theories among the online community suggesting that she was the real killer in the previous film and attributed it to Richie and Amber. The film’s final moment shows her discarding the Ghostface mask, seemingly ready to let go of her past.
Which characters could be Ghostface in Scream 7?
Scream 7 has been confirmed, but it’s already gone through a lot of production drama to bring Ghostface back. This makes it harder to predict who will wear the mask this time. Although the new “Core Four” of Sam, Tara, Mindy and Chad was only established in the last film, it has already fallen apart with Sam and Tara will not return for the sequel because their actors have left the franchise. This leaves Mindy and Chad’s fate uncertain, but it’s possible they could become the new lead siblings.
However, Scream 7 will bring back legacy characters as well with Neve Campbell confirmed return to the franchise after sitting out the last inning. Patrick Dempsey will also return as Mark de Scream 3, who is now Sidney’s husband. Gale will also return with Courteney Cox being the only actor to appear in all of the films. There is also the possibility that Kirby will return after Scream VI and although Sam is dead, her love interest from the last film, Danny, is a possibility.
However, when it comes to who Ghostface will be, it seems probably this Scream 7 will follow the trend of the franchise’s sequels and make the new characters the killers. However, with so few ways to fool fans now, perhaps it’s finally time to see a legacy character embrace his killer instinct.
Scream 7 will likely have to abandon its ongoing Ghostface story
One of the most interesting aspects of the latest Scream films has been the connection between Sam Carpenter and the legacy of Ghostface. As the daughter of the original Ghostface killer, Billy Loomis, Sam often fears being drawn down the same dark path as her father and having the killer instinct as if she had inherited his murderous habits. This adds to other people’s suspicions of her, with several characters accusing her of being the killer, with Scream VI presenting public opinion that she framed Richie.
Throughout her two films, Sam remained the heroine, but she also showed her ruthless side, even donning the Ghostface mask in Scream VI to finish off Bailey. Making Sam the killer in one of the Scream films would have been bold, but sometimes it also seemed like a possibility. With the plot still under construction, it now appears that the Scream the franchise will have to abandon that idea now that Sam will no longer be involved.
Sam was the character needed to continue this story, increasing the disappointment of seeing her leave the Scream franchise.
It’s a shame that the potential of having such a conflicted and possibly deadly Final Girl is wasted. With Sidney returning to the lead role, trying to do the same thing with her character would never work, as the audience already sees her as too much of a hero. Sam was the character needed to continue this story, increasing the disappointment of seeing her leave the Scream franchise.
Which Ghostface killer was the best?
THE Scream the sequels, while not overshadowing the original dynamic duo of Billy Loomis and Stu Macher, introduced several Ghostface killers who continued to elevate the series with their unique motives and distinct killing styles. In Scream 2Mrs. Loomis emerges from the shadows of her son’s actions, bringing cold, calculated revenge. His story provided depth, illuminating the consequences of the events of the first film on the families left behind. His crazy sidekick, Mickey, was behind one of the franchise’s most iconic scenes. THE The soundproof room sequence was the Ghostface killer at his most sadistic, vengeful, and intelligent..
The uniqueness of Ghostface’s identity proved to be a cornerstone in subsequent films. Roman Bridger in Scream 3 stood out not only for his direct family ties to Sidney, but also for his dual role as director of the Stab series. This provided a fascinating meta-commentary on the blending of reality and fiction. Furthermore, Roman deserves credit for being so successful, being the only Scream murderer and not having a partner. The villain was also the mastermind behind the previous films, which makes Romand a front-runner for the best Ghostface killer.
Scream VI saw the most Ghostface killers yet, but even with three people wearing the mask, they still couldn’t complete their mission to avenge Richie’s death by killing Sam and Tara Carpenter.
The new era of Scream films that started with Scream V also presents interesting takes on the Ghostface killers, but none of the villains are all that smart and rather clumsy Scream killers, even when they are not wearing the mask that obscures their vision. Scream V Richie and Amber were fans of Stab series and met online, and their plan was all over the place. Scream VI saw the most Ghostface killers yet, but even with three people wearing the mask, they still couldn’t complete their mission to avenge Richie’s death by killing Sam and Tara Carpenter.
However, the original Scream killers, Billy Loomis and Stu Macher are without a doubt Ghostface’s best killers. His reasons were deeply personal and unnerving. Billy’s fury resulted from his mother’s abandonment following his father’s affair with Sidney’s mother. Their killing styles were distinct: Stu was more unhinged and frenzied, while Billy transformed from Sidney’s loving boyfriend to her most fearsome adversary. The two had chemistry and played with the self-awareness of the horror genre, which is the franchise’s greatest trademark. Ultimately, the first Scream The Killers established the Ghostface killer’s distinct troublemaker and prankster style, along with the element of surprise.
Scream’s many killers make it an exception among slashers
One of the best things about Scream movies is what they deliver an incredible horror experience while also commenting on the genre itself. Ghostface has earned a place as one of the most iconic horror movie killers of all time. However, unlike other icons like Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers, it’s not a single character that always returns, but rather a mantle to be taken up by new killers with each new film. This has allowed Scream and its sequels will be horror films and also detective mysteries.
However, Ghostface also gives the film more opportunities for meta-commentary. With each new person deciding to continue Ghostface’s legacy, the films can comment on the legacy of the franchise itself. There is no better example of this than the opening of Scream 2 with a theater full of people in Ghostface masks. Within the film, they are all fans of the Stab films, but this shows how much of an icon Ghostface has become since the first one. Scream.
