The best moveset for Gengar in Pokemon GO is having Lick as your quick attack and Shadow Ball as his charged attack. It’s a close call because Gengar’s dual Ghost and Poison typing means you can use both types of moves to get a 20% STAB (same type attack bonus). Alternatively, you can swap Shadow Ball for Sludge Bomb and get roughly the same results.

However, when analyzing the numbers, Lick and Shadow Ball achieve a higher overall DPS (damage per second) of 16.28 compared to 15.73 for Lick and Sludge Bomb. This is part of why Shadow Ball is also great to use in counter move sets against Dynamax Ghastly in Pokemon GO. Even when you’re not gearing up a Gengar to fight Pokémon of types that are weak to Ghost-type attacks – Psychic and Ghost types – this moveset will still make yours a decent all-around attacker for dealing strong neutral damage.

With a high Attack stat but lower Stamina and Defense, Gengar is widely considered a glass cannon, but can still be good at Pokemon GO to certain PvE clashes and PvP battles. Its four weaknesses; Dark, Ghostly, Earthly and Psychic; and its low volume doesn’t make it great for defending Gyms, as it can be easily countered.

On the other hand, when facing Raids alongside Great League and Ultra League matches, Gengar is fantastic for dealing massive amounts of damage at a fast pace, especially when you take into account its Mega Evolution and Dynamax forms. It’s only facing top Master League contenders with better stats that it falls short. Just remember to add Lick and Shadow Ball to your moveset.and you will have the best Gengar to add to your Pokemon GO team.
