This article contains spoilers from Lost.
At the end of the present timeline LostMost of the characters have either left the island or died there, but some are still alive and on the island. Before LostS Jack Shepherd died in the same place where he woke in the jungle years before, he saw the repaired Ajira Airways flight 316 flying away from the island. The plane was flown by pilot Frank Lapidus, and its passengers included Kate Austen, James “Sawyer” Ford, Claire Littleton, Miles Strome and Richard Alpert, all of whom successfully left the island and returned to civilization.
While most of LostThe characters were no longer on the island when Jack died and Ajira Flight 316 flew away, some important characters still remained. Most of the characters still on the island at this point chose to stay, whether it was to protect the island or because the island brought them peace the regular world could not provide. For others, they are still on the island by circumstance and not by choice.

Hugo “Hurley” Rice
Hurley became the protector of the island
Hurley remained on the island because he was chosen to be his new protector. Jack volunteers to inherit the role of the island’s longtime protector, James. After Jack is mortally wounded while saving the island and his friends in Losts series finale, Jack made Hurley the island’s new protectorEmphasizing that the compassionate Hurley always knew how to take care of other people, making him a perfect fit for this position moving forward.
In “The New Man in Charge” epilogue, Hurley was seen outside the Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute in Los Angeles, waiting for Walt Lloyd to come back to the island with him and to give him a job. Even if Hurley had physically left the island, he was still its protector, and only left to recruit Walt. Hurley’s scene with Benjamin Linus in The Flash-Sideways also suggests Hurley stayed in the role and on the island for many years, with Ben fondly telling him, “You were a great number one, Hugo” As they said goodbye to each other.

Benjamin Linus
Ben became Hurley’s “number two”
Although Ben had a chance to leave the island via Ajira Flight 316, he refused the opportunity, claiming that if the island went down, he would go down with it. After the island was saved, Hurley asked Ben if he could help him in his new roleAs Ben has many years of leadership experience and extensive knowledge of the island. Ben was honored and gladly accepted Hurley’s offer as he stayed on the island with a renewed sense of purpose.
Following Hurley’s instructions, Ben later traveled to Guam to close a warehouse after sending Dharma Initiative food drops to the island, and went to Los Angeles to recruit Walt. He then returned to the island with Hurley and Walt and presumably continued to thrive in his position as Hurley told Ben in the flash sideways, “You were a real good number two.” Ben was loyal to Hurley in a way he had never been loyal to anyone else.

Desmond Hume
Desmond probably didn’t stay on the island for long
Shortly after removing the cork from the heart of the island, Desmond became trapped, and he remained in this state as Ajira Flight 316 took off. When Hurley was overwhelmed and unsure how to begin his work as protector of the island, Ben suggested that Hurley begin making sure Desmond returned home. Harley was initially concerned about the proposal because people were not allowed to leave the island in the past, but Ben encouraged Harley that he could handle things in a different and better way now.
While Desmond is technically still on the island the last time he was seen in LostIn today’s timeline, he probably didn’t stay there long. Hurley and Ben probably ensured that Desmond left the island and returned home to his wife Penny and their son Charlie. Desmond refused to willingly return to the island with the Oceanic Six on Ajira Flight 316 and only returned after being kidnapped by Charles Widmore, meaning he obviously did not want to stay there and wanted to be reunited with his family.

Rose and Bernard Nadler
They agreed to never leave the island
In season 2, episode 19, “SOS,” Rose and Bernard agreed that they would never leave the island Because the island has cured Rose of cancer. They did not want to risk leaving because the cancer might come back, so they chose to stay on the island where they can live a healthy and peaceful life. They stood by their word, built a cabin for themselves when the island sent them back to the 1970s, and made an effort to stay out of the drama happening elsewhere on the island.
They broke their rule to help pull Desmond out of the well during Losts series finale, and are threatened by the Man in Black, but Desmond agrees to go with him as long as Rose and Bernard are not hurt. The Man in Black left with Desmond and that was the last time Rose and Bernard were seen in the present timeline. They probably spent the rest of their lives on the island.

Vincent
Everyone on the island loved Vincent
walt’s dog, Vincent, was last seen next to Jack in his final moments On the island, bringing the series full-circle, and proving that, despite Jack’s frequent phrase, “Live together, die alone,” He didn’t have to die alone. After Jack’s death, Vincent probably returned to Rose and Bernard, as he lived with them when they traveled alongside others. Lost letters, and when they returned to the present. Many people looked after Vincent on the island, but Rose and Bernard looked after him the longest.
With Walt choosing to return to the island in the series epilogue, Vincent probably was able to reunite with Walt as well. This would certainly help Walt feel at home again on the island. It could also ensure that Vincent would have someone to look after him when Rose and Bernard died, and while Hurley probably would have been happy to do that, it would have been more fitting for Walt to be the one to do it.

Cindy Chandler, Zach and Emma
They came a long way from being taken by others
Cindy was a flight attendant on Oceanic Flight 815 and was among the tail section survivors, like young Zach and Emma, who traveled on the plane without their parents. Zack and Emma are taken by the others on Losts island, and Cindy was also later taken. In season 3, it was revealed that Cindy, Zach and Emma acclimated well to being with each other And are now part of their group.
Cindy, Zack and Emma reappeared in season 6 in the others’ temple, where they have lived for the past several years. They left the temple when the Man in Black threatened to kill all who remained behind, and later survived Charles Widmore’s team attacking their camp. Cindy, Zack and Emma remained on the island after the Man in Black was defeated and Hurley took over as the new protector.

Michael Dawson
His spirit was still on the island
Although Michael died when the Priest Freighter exploded, his spirit remaining trapped on the island afterwards, joining the ranks of Losts whispers. Hurley saw and communicated with Michael’s ghost in the season 6 episode “Everybody Loves Hugo.” Michael also told Hurley that if he saw Libby Smith’s ghost, he wanted Hurley to tell her he was sorry, a reference to the unresolved guilt he felt for shooting and killing her in Lost Season 2.
When Ben went to see Walt in Los Angeles in LostHe tells Walt that Michael needs his help. Walt did not understand how he could help his late father, and Ben did not explain, but When Walt returned to the island, he probably helped his father’s spirit move on. It would also give Walt and Michael a chance to have the reconciliation they never got in the series.

How the future of the island probably looked like The island would also be a less hostile environment than in the past.
It is interesting to consider how the island might have viewed Hurley and Ben as the men in charge. Although Hurley was a much more laid-back character than Ben, he was also a much more empathetic individual. Ben was more clinical and practical in his approach to conflict in his everyday life. The two would definitely have balanced one another in their desire to protect the island from those who would exploit it. that is, With Hurley in charge, the islanders would likely have functioned very differently.
for starters, There would be fewer people on the island. As Ben points out, with Harley in charge, he can give people access to leave the island if they don’t want to live out the rest of their days there, unlike Rose and Bernard. That means The children who survived the plane crash would probably be allowed to go home to their parents.
Hurley and Ben setting out to stop the Dharma food drops is also a great indicator of this. If they don’t need the dharma supplies to drop, they probably have fewer people to supply or are better off supplying themselves from other sources. With Hurley seemingly not leaving the island much, there is the possibility of setting up some crops or having a regular supply team to go to and from the island instead.
The island would also be a less hostile environment than in the past. after all, The survivors of the plane crash, those who were first called the Others, and even the ghosts of the island like Michael, all seemed to be able to coexist at this point. Harley wouldn’t encourage kidnapping to grow the population and he certainly wouldn’t have approved of experimenting on anyone who didn’t want to be there like the previous inhabitants of the island.
The only time there could be any danger would be from outside forces looking to get to the island again. With the number of people who even know of his existence being much less after so much bloodshed on the island, it is likely that these incidents would be few and far between and Hurley is the one in charge.
The island would be much closer to the paradise that Rose and Bernard wanted when they realized that Rose’s cancer was cured in Lost.
