Nightwing #119 officially introduces a new creative team, with Dan Watters, Dexter Soy, Veronica Gandini and Wes Abbott replacing Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo. This issue is significant for a number of reasons, but two stand out: the debut of Nightwing’s latest enemies.
The first is a mysterious, nameless clown with metapowers, with a disturbing obsession with Dick Grayson that dates back to his childhood. The second is Olivia Pearce, CEO of a weapons company that specializes in creating weapons specifically designed to kill heroes. At the end of the edition, it is revealed that these two villains are conspiring, and have both marked Dick Grayson for “death.”

Despite appearing on the first three pages of the Nightwing #119, the meta-clown only reappears in the final moments, where it is revealed that he and Olivia are in cahoots. The two villains watch Nightwing through security feeds as he fights Spheric Solutions’ laser-firing security system. The clown draws attention to the “mark” on Dick’s chest, saying“A curious brand for a circus boy to wear… Because the circus has its own language. Your own code and beliefs, which derive from us. So tell us, faithful servant of the Cirque du Sin… what does a bird in the circus tent mean?” Olivia responds, “A bird means death.”
This exchange imbues Nightwing’s symbol with the ominous meaning of “death” while also marking him for that fate. One could interpret this moment as the villains believing that Dick sealed his own destruction the moment he took on his Nightwing persona. This inference is further supported by the clown’s previous narration revealing that he and a mysterious group have been watching Dick since his childhood and that when he became Robin “…it was then that [they] knew he was [theirs].” That’s why, For reasons yet to be revealed, Dick’s heroic journey marked him for death.
