Mickey defends himself inside prison
After Mickey is accused of first-degree murder in The Law of Innocence, A judge sets his bail at an excessively high $5 million because of a grudge over an old case. The court eventually reduces the amount to $2.5 million, which is much closer to the $2 million base amount for the crime in Los Angeles courts (via 2024 Criminal Bail Schedule).
Thanks to the bail agents, Mickey would only need to pay 10% of the bail amount; however, he chooses to stay behind bars. Since he is helping Hayley while she studies law, he has no money to pay and is unwilling to stop funding his daughter’s education. Consequently, he will have to stay behind bars for the entire trial, planning most of his defense in the prison library while his team helps investigate the crime and frame the work externally.

Hayley Haller decides to be a defense lawyer instead of a prosecutor
Mickey Haller’s trial changes Hayley’s perspective on the law
At the end of Lincoln’s lawyer In the third season, Hayley Haller reveals that she wants to pursue law, but that she is interested in being a prosecutor, not a defense lawyer. This reflects the Lincoln Lawyer series where Hayley Haller practices criminal law. At the beginning of The Law of Innocenceshe is studying law, having graduated from university. She has every intention of becoming a prosecutor when she graduates. However, his intended career changes after Mickey is wrongly accused of first-degree murder.
She already expressed at the end of Lincoln’s lawyer Season 3 that innocent people deserve lawyers who represent them effectively, and Mickey’s situation shows this to Hayley, making her want to be a defense lawyer instead of a prosecutor. Because of the age difference between Hayley in the books and the Netflix series, it is unlikely that she will already be in college and studying law when Mickey’s trial begins. However, she could still change her mind about her career even if her career started further down the line.
The FBI keeps Mickey in prison even though they know he was framed
The FBI puts its own interests ahead of Mickey’s freedom
In The Law of Innocencethe FBI has a massive investigation into Louis Opparizio and his company BioGreen Industries, which Cisco and Jennifer Aronson know. Even if the FBI discovers that Mickey was being framed, they do not disclose this information to the district attorney, prosecutors, or the LAPD. Although Judge Violet Warfield has subpoenaed agents to testify in Mickey Haller’s court case, the FBI refuses to comply, which falls under the Lincoln’s lawyer Season 3’s themes of corruption and misconduct within the government and police.
Mickey’s charges were dropped, but he was not found innocent
The FBI pressures the district attorney to drop the charges
Instead of being found innocent by a jury, Mickey Haller’s court case ends unexpectedly. As the FBI is pressured to allow its agents to testify in Mickey’s court case, they find a way to do the right thing by the wrongfully accused defense attorney without publicly revealing their investigation into BioGreen Industries. They go to the Los Angeles district attorney with their evidence about Opparizio killing Sam Scales, and the prosecutor’s office decides to drop the charges against Mickey.
Unfortunately for Mickey, when the charges are dropped, it doesn’t mean they are legally innocent. It simply means they are no longer being accused of a crime. As such, dropped charges are not entirely satisfactory to the defense attorney, who likes to win in a trial rather than out of court. Additionally, Opparizio is not accused and convicted of the crime, which would have effectively rendered Mickey innocent.

Mickey and Maggie Rekindle Their Romance Just Before COVID-19 Lockdown
An imminent event in The Law of Innocence is a mysterious illness that turns out to be COVID-19. At the end of the book, Mickey and Maggie rebuild their romantic connection and decide to quarantine together.
