Notice! SPOILERS for Grey’s Anatomy Season 21, Episode 5 ahead.
Schmitt’s story gained prominence in Grey’s Anatomy
season 21, episode 5, and in doing so introduced its perfect exit plot that could lead to a multi-layered happily ever after. Ahead of Grey’s Anatomy release of the 21st seasontwo major departures had already been confirmed, resulting in new intern Mika Yasuda and longtime resident Levi Schmitt both ending up away from Gray Sloan Memorial. While the arrival of Mika’s younger sister and her cancer hinted at Mika’s exit storyline, including its fair share of drama, Season 21 Episode 5 seemingly showed that Levi’s story will go in the opposite direction.
First introduced in Grey’s Anatomy In the Season 14 premiere, Levi Schmitt belonged to a group of interns who thrived studying under Gray Sloan doctors around the time Meredith Gray earned her Harper Avery, but also suffered most when Gray Sloan lost its residency program. Between this and briefly leaving his residence after not following the Webber method and painstakingly killing his patient, Levi has had a rough road. Yet, decide on a specialty in Grey’s Anatomy season 20 apparently got him back on track, before his ABSITE scores ended up being too low to be considered for a Peds scholarship.
Schmitt’s Ofelia Case Proved He Was Right in Choosing Pediatricians in Season 20 of Grey’s Anatomy
Schmitt seemed to choose pediatrics out of convenience, but it is actually his calling
Schmitt’s insistent way of showing his interest in Pedology to Monica Beltran in Grey’s Anatomy season 20 angered her and recommended her as a possible companion. Schmitt spent hours in Pedology and had someone who supported him but guaranteed him a future in the specialty of his choice, but everything changed the moment Schmitt’s ABSITE scores were not high enough for that. However, how Schmitt handled Ofelia’s case in Grey’s Anatomy Season 21, Episode 5 Proved His Initial Choice of Specialty Was Rightcausing him to care for her well-being despite the death-defying circumstances he and Adams found themselves in.
The fact that Schmitt overcame his terror of helicopters during a thunderstorm because his attention was focused on treating Ofelia further confirms how his ABSITE scores mattered less than his natural inclination toward Peds.
Although the specialty chosen by Schmitt in Grey’s Anatomy season 20 felt wrong because it felt like he chose it out of convenience, the way Schmitt took care of Ofelia’s health and quality of life made it clear that pedology was her calling. Without his intuition, Ofelia would probably have lost her leg because of the storm that delayed her arrival. The fact that Schmitt overcame his terror of helicopters during a thunderstorm because his attention was focused on Ofelia’s treatment further confirms how his ABSITE scores mattered less than his natural inclination toward Peds, making his missed chance in that specialty all the more unfair.
How joining Beltran’s Texas teammate sets up Schmitt’s best future
An Alternative Path to a Pediatrics Fellowship Could Give Schmitt What He Wants
How Schmitt saved Ofelia was not lost on Beltran, who finally saw how Peds was Schmitt’s calling, going so far as to admit that she had never been “more certain than a resident belongs to Peds.” Beltran’s proposal to send Schmitt to do research with his colleague in Texas before reapplying for a Pedology fellowship thus charts Schmitt’s future away from Gray Sloan but also closer to his dream specialty.making it the best possible exit plot for him as it would bring him closer to his goal.
Schmitt’s early relationship with Grey’s Anatomy Season 21’s new chaplain, James, could also factor into Schmitt’s potential move to Texas and happily ever after. Meeting him already revealed how James loved to travel and had already done a lot. That would Schmitt’s move to Texas is an opportunity for professional and personal happiness forever. In fact, moving away from Gray Sloan Memorial to pursue the specialty of his choice and not having to lose his precious connection with James would make Schmitt’s exit storyline into Grey’s Anatomy season 21 the best it could be.
