This is the Zodiac brings to light new evidence from the Seawater family, who intimately knew prime suspect Arthur Leigh Allen. As discussed in the Netflix documentary series, new evidence indicates that Allen was present at every known Zodiac crime sceneand was also around for three additional unsolved murders. However, one of the victims of the Zodiac attack who survived to tell the tale, Bryan C. Hartnell, was partially responsible for throwing the police off Zodiac’s scent in 1969.
By that time, the Zodiac had already struck twice, shooting two victims to death on Lake Herman Road in Benecia on December 20, 1968, and another pair in Vallejo seven months later. The killer had already sent letters and figures to the SAPD threatening new deaths, when he approached couple Cecelia Ann Shepard and Bryan C. Hartnell at a picnic at Lake Berryessa, Napa County, on September 29, 1969.

Hartnell attempted a description of his attacker
According to zodiacciphers. withHartnell, 20, and Shepard, 22, were simply talking, reading and watching the water when they noticed a man spying on them from behind trees about 300 yards away. The stranger appeared, put on a black executioner’s hat and a bib around his waist, and approached them, brandishing a gun. Shepard warned Hartnell, “Oh my God, he has a gun,” and Hartnell tried to strike up a conversation with the man, who told him he was a fugitive and needed his money and car keys.. He then ordered Shepard to tie up Hartnell, tied up Shepard himself, and pulled out a knife.
Hartnell was stabbed six times in the back, while Shepard was stabbed ten times in the back and abdomen. Hartnell pretended to be dead and his would-be executioner eventually left. Hartnell managed to crawl to the side of the road and alert police. Shepard lived long enough to agree with Hartnell’s description of his hooded attacker: “He had brown hair, weighed 225-250 pounds and was 5’8″ to 5’10” tall,” and “her hair fell over her forehead and showed through her eye sockets.“Before leaving, the Zodiac marked the crime scene, writing on Hartnell’s Karmann Ghia door:”Vallejo 12-20-68, 7-4-69, September 27-69 – 6:30 am. by knife.”
Bryan C. Hartnell’s Role in David Fincher’s Zodiac Explained
Hartnell was a consultant on Fincher’s film
Bryan Hartnell survived his ordeal, but Cecelia Shepard succumbed to her injuries the next day. From his hospital bed, Hartnell gave interviews to the press and became something of a local celebrity. It wasn’t until 2007 that David Fincher enlisted the help of Hartnell to make his seminal film about the Zodiac murders., Zodiac, which starred Jake Gyllenhaal as Robert Graysmith, Mark Ruffalo as Detective David Toschi and Robert Downey Jr as Paul Avery. The film brought new attention and focus to the unsolved Zodiac case and encouraged a new group of amateur detectives to try to crack the Zodiac ciphers.
Hartnell was a consultant on the film, but he also managed to persuade Fincher to give him a role in the film, albeit a brief one. It can be seen at the one hour, 36 minutes and 28 seconds mark in Zodiac when Detective David Toschi (Mark Ruffalo) has a heated conversation with Captain Marty Lee (Dermot Mulroney) on the steps of the SAPD. Hartnell appeared as himself twice more on screen, in 1999 Case reopened2016 Buzzfeed Unsolved: True Crimeand once in Today in true crime podcast in 2019.

In the 55 years since his horrific attack, Hartnell has mostly kept to his own advice. Born July 1, 1949 in Walla Walla Washington, he now resides in Redlands, California, with his wife Monica Hartnell, for cinemaholic.com. He has two sons, Benjamin and Jonathan. His acting career was short-lived and may have been his way of dealing with the trauma of that day in September 1969. After appearing in Fincher’s film, he appears to have taken the opportunity to retreat from public view. He currently runs his own law firm – Hartnell, Lister and Moore – specializing in civil matters.
Hartnell’s description of the man who attacked him bears no resemblance to Arthur Leigh Allen
Bryan Hartnell is a central character in the Zodiac story and remains the only survivor. To some extent, his descriptions of the man who attacked him may have unwittingly contributed to the killer’s escape from justice. In This is the Zodiac speaking There’s a solid argument that Arthur Leigh Allen was the Zodiac killer, but Hartnell’s description of the man who attacked him bears no resemblance to Allen, who was much taller and bald. The mystery remains unsolved.
