A promising update from 20th Century Studios head Steve Asbell details what’s next Agatha Christie adaptations and the books they will adapt. The studio has had some success adapting Christie’s work for the big screen in recent years, assigning directorial duties to Kenneth Branagh as well as starring as the iconic Hercule Poirot. All three of the studio’s Poirot films received relatively fresh reviews on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $612 million at the global box office, leaving the door open for more adaptations of Christie’s revered novels.
Talking to The Hollywood ReporterAsbell spoke about the prospect of more adaptations of Christie’s work. He revealed that the next three adaptations will be based on And then there was no one, witness for the prosecution, and Miss Marple. Asbell also said that there are “several other titles”In the works. No further details have been revealed, so it’s unclear whether Branagh will return to direct any of them. Read Asbell’s full comment below:
More, yes. We have and then there were none. We have a Witness for the Prosecution. We’re doing Miss Marple. There are several other titles we are working on. We have a very close relationship with the property.
What this means for future adaptations of Agatha Christie’s novels
Branagh may not be back, but exciting newcomers will step into the spotlight
Unless the creative team makes significant changes to the books, viewers shouldn’t expect Branagh as Hercule Poirot in these announced adaptations. The detective does not appear in And then there were none or Witness for the Prosecution, and never met the titular Miss Jane Marple in any of Christie’s books. He could return to direct, but those chances seem less likely since he probably wouldn’t star in any of the upcoming adaptations.
The most intriguing information here is the upcoming adaptation of And then there were none. As with any of Christie’s best work, the novel has been adapted numerous times for the big and small screenwith highlights being the 1945 adaptation, which still has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and the 2015 BBC limited series starring Charles Dance. Expectations will be high, but if 20th Century Studios takes its time, it could create an exciting project that could equal or even surpass what has come before.
Our opinion on Christie’s upcoming adaptations
These projects can feature incredible casts
As a fan of Christie’s And then there were noneI’m very excited about this upcoming adaptation as, like most films based on Christie’s work, serve as a fitting display of its cast’s talent. Branagh’s films thus far have achieved a high level of this, as each film involves a proud cast full of established and emerging talent, such as Branagh himself as Poirot or Kyle Allen as Maxime Gerard in A haunting in Venice. Whether or not Branagh returns to direct, these upcoming adaptations of CristinaHis work is highly anticipated.
