Since then, Freeman has appeared in several films in leading and supporting roles, and among his most notable projects are Driving Miss Daisy, Glory, The Shawshank Redemption, Se7enand Christopher Nolan The Dark Knight trilogy. Freeman also participated in happier stories, such as Bruce Almightywhere he played God but was considered a “wise mentor” – and although it’s a role that suits him, one of his funniest roles reversed that in a brilliant and unexpected way.

The Lego Movie’s Vitruvius was a hilarious take on Morgan Freeman’s wise mentor characters

Vitruvius wasn’t exactly the best mentor

The Lego Movie Lucy and Vitruvius

Morgan Freeman played mentor roles in films of different genres – for example, he did this in David Fincher. Se7en as William Somerset and also in the comedy Bruce Almighty like God himself. The latter is one of Freeman’s most notable comedies, but there’s another hilarious character who turned into the stereotypical Freeman’s wise mentor: Vitruvius in The Lego Movie. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, The Lego Movie follows Emmet Brickowski (voiced by Chris Pratt), an ordinary Lego minifigure who ends up helping a resistance movement stop the evil plans of a tyrannical businessman.

When Vitruvius met Emmett, he guided him, Wyldstyle, and Batman to Cloud Cuckoo Land and shared the prophecy.

At the beginning of The Lego Moviespectators meet Vitruvius, a wizard who goes blind when he fails to protect a superweapon called Kragle from the above mentioned Lord Business. When Vitruvius meets Emmett, he guides him, Wyldstyle, and Batman to Cloud Cuckoo Land and shares the prophecy. However, Vitruvius is later decapitated by Business and shortly before dying, He reveals that he invented the prophecy – but he returns briefly as a ghost to tell Emmett that his self-confidence makes him the Special One.

What sets him apart is that he was terrible as a wise old mentor, starting with the fact that he invented the prophecy.

Vitruvius is the stereotypical wise mentor: an old man who has been through a lot and has a lot of knowledge to share. Furthermore, and to make him even better suited to the role, Vitruvius is a wizard – what sets him apart is that he was terrible as a wise old mentor, starting with the fact that he invented the prophecy, so there was really no guidance for him. Emmett. However, Vitruvius played a large part in the film’s comedy, which also reversed the role of the wise old mentor, who is usually a serious character.
