The film works for several reasons. Despite being an unrealistic story, Baker leans in to ensure that the end result is one we can completely let loose with and enjoy. But this is not just a story about drugs, sex and money. Baker is clear about Annie’s desires. After being raised in a broken home with no one to show her true unconditional love, Annie gravitates to jokes to fill the void. But Baker assures us that identifying and holding on to this type of love is not easy. If it comes easily, it is usually accompanied by shady promises and heartbreak.
