All 17 Supernatural Parallel Universes Explained

Like many of the largest franchises currently in operation, Supernatural
created a multiverse, but unlike the cinematic universes, most of these other worlds were explored in the main series. Considering the show’s extraordinary run from 2005 to 2020, there was plenty of time to fill in stories across 327 episodes of Supernatural. Although the show began with humble horror beginnings that leaned heavily into supernatural horror stories featuring demons and terrifying monsters, it quickly evolved into an emotional and dramatic fantasy series that revolved around two brothers.

Sam and Dean Winchester did Supernatural which is, from the minute the pair appear on screen together to Season 15’s emotional finale. But over time, the brothers come across increasingly challenging enemies, including the aforementioned demons, then angels, then supernatural beings that are as old as time, and eventually even God himself. And the action didn’t stop at the limit of its own reality either. In later seasons, starting with season 6, the show began to introduce and mention the multiverse, with other worlds parallel to its own.

Alternative Earth

Sam and Dean Winchester look confused in The French Mistake

The first mention of another reality Supernatural came in season 6, episode 15, “The French Mistake.” This introduction to the multiverse was perfect for Supernaturalas it used the meta humor that the show does extremely well to place Sam and Dean in the roles of Jared and Jensen. This world is very similar to Sam and Dean’s, with one major exception being the fact that magical and supernatural beings do not exist here. It is clearly implied that Sam and Dean have invaded the real world occupied by the public, by entering the lives of the actors who play Sam and Dean in the series.

World of the Apocalypse

Supernatural Apocalypse World

Apocalypse World most closely resembles the world occupied by Sam and Dean, and in fact, they both had the same history until 1973. At that point, John Wicnchester was killed by Azazel, and Mary Campbell was offered to save his life, but she refused. . As a result, neither Sam nor Dean are born, and when the apocalypse arrives with Archangel Michael leading the charge, the world quickly falls. This world is a battlefield, with many cities completely destroyed and an alternate version of Michael ruling the world with an iron fist.

The bad place

Inside Supernaturalon one of the occasions when Dean dies, he arrives in a large forest, full of monsters and deadly creatures. It was revealed that this was Purgatory, and the alternate world, known as ‘The Bad Place’, looks a lot like this world, except that there is a day and night cycle, while Purgatory is constantly in darkness. The Bad Place is only seen briefly in season 13 when Kaia Nieves is introduced. Kaia is a dreamer, capable of traveling across worlds, and is trapped in The Bad Place for two years, running away from monsters to try to stay alive.

The world of Yokoth and Glythur

Tentacles emerging from the world of Yokoth and Glythur in Supernatural

Supernatural Season 13 has done a lot of heavy lifting when it comes to introducing alternate worlds, as several episodes revolve around these mysterious places. In Season 13, Episode 17, “The Thing,” another is revealed when Sam and Dean accidentally free an ancient, hungry god known as Yokoth. Yokoth was a being who previously resided in a world where she and her partner, Glythur, destroyed galaxies and consumed all of their reality. One of the Men of Letters from Sam and Dean’s world opened a rift to bring in these destroyers and cleanse the Earth, but they were ultimately separated and Yokoth imprisoned until decades later.

Earth 2

Supernatural's God points to Team Free Will on a TV screen on Earth 2

In Supernatural Season 15, Episode 12, ‘Galaxy Brain’, God, also known as Chuck, is seen residing on Earth 2. This world is very similar to Sam and Dean’s own world, but God fled here after escaping from a prepared trap by Sam and Dean. This is where God chooses to camp out in a radio shed, watching countless TV screens and destroying each reality one by one. It takes time, so he spends weeks watching each reality come to an end on monitors before finally destroying Earth 2 and returning to face Sam and Dean.

12

HunterCorp World

HunterCorp's Sam and Dean Winchester in Supernatural

THE Supernatural The episode that follows Chuck’s destructive streak of destroying entire worlds, “Destiny’s Child”, introduced yet another alternate world, but this time, several of its inhabitants managed to escape their world’s explosive destruction. John Winchester of HunterCorp World was a wealthy businessman who founded a hunting company that became wildly successful. As a result, he spoiled his sons, Sam and Dean, and although they were ‘hunters’, they didn’t have as much experience fighting monsters as their alternate counterparts.

11

Scooby-Doo Universe

Sam and Dean animated in the Scooby Doo Supernatural crossover

Returning briefly to season 13, there was a notable crossover that saw Sam and Dean transported into the world of another popular supernatural mystery show, Scooby-Doo. “Scoobynatural” finds Sam, Dean and Castiel transported inside a TV, where they join the Scooby gang. This world appears to be the same as the one seen in Scooby-Doo, where are you!and just like that, the Winchesters and Cas are transformed into animated characters. This world is only seen and mentioned on TV, and a ghost child with psychic powers transports them in and out, which could mean it is not one of the worlds created, or later destroyed, by Chuck.

Supernatural: the world of the anime series

In another animated adventure, Sam and Dean Winchester were adapted into an anime series originally released in Japan, before being translated and released in the US. Supernatural: the anime series had a season of 22 episodes, with 12 adapted stories and 10 original adventures. This means that although there were similarities, this reality clearly diverges from the events of the original and stands out as an entirely different world.

9

Monster Club Universe

Mary and John walking with Lata and Carolos in The Winchesters

While The Winchesters was originally set as a prequel spin-off that would explore the story of John Winchester and Mary Campbell’s initial romance, the short-lived series quickly charted its own path. In the first and only season released before the show was canceled, Monster Club Universe, where John, Mary and their friends face incredible threats, they prove themselves incredibly capable as they battle menacing, world-ending monsters. The series has connections to the original, but this is not the John and Mary Winchester who appear in the original series.

8

The Akrida Universe

Akrida the Winchesters

The most notable threat the Monster Club members face is a monster known as Akrida. This creature has never appeared in Supernaturaland apparently they weren’t native to the Monster Club universe either. Instead, the universe the Akrida come from remains largely mysterious, but it was clearly a place these creatures fled to or left behind. Whether the Akrida destroyed their reality like Yokoth and Glythur, or whether they wanted to find a place where they could reign supreme is unclear, but they arrived in the Monster Club Universe and fought the Monster Club.

7

Sam becomes Lucifer’s world-vessel

Mark Pellegrino as Lucifer and Jared Padalecki as Sam Winchester in Supernatural

From now on, the universes mentioned below have incredibly limited information as they are only mentioned briefly in the show and most are never seen. In an alternate world, Sam chooses to give in to Lucifer, after discovering that he is destined to be the Archangel’s vessel. Once Lucifer claims Sam’s body as his own, he kills Dean. Why Dean wasn’t inhabited by Michael, as he should have been in Sam and Dean’s reality, is unclear, but Dean doesn’t give up without a fight and tries to shoot Sam/Lucifer with the Colt, but this ultimately fails. stop him.

6

Dean, the knight from the world of hell

Mark Dean of Cain in Supernatural

On the other hand, in another universe, Dean becomes a Knight of Hell, trained by Cain himself and sent into the world to cause chaos and destruction. Presumably this happens after Dean dies and goes to Hell, where he eventually has the opportunity to torture other people instead of being tortured himself. Dean clearly impresses the leaders below by being promoted, given the Mark of Cain, and sent out into the world to kill Sam with the First Blade.

5

Demon Sam kills Dean World

Jared Padalecki as Demon Sam Winchester smiling in Supernatural

Once again, reversing the age-old narrative, there is a universe where Sam is completely corrupted by the demon blood he received as a baby, and he kills Dean. In Supernatural In season 2, Sam discovers that Azazel fed him demon blood when he was a baby. This blood gave Sam supernatural powers, such as telekinesis, and made him part demon. However, while the series shows Sam overcoming this situation, the alternate universe tells a very different story.

4

Reverse world

Supernatural Season 2, Episode 20

Betting everything on reverse ideology, there is an entire universe where everything is backwards. This world is only mentioned and there is no real explanation of how or why things are backwards. Even the actual meaning of reverse in this context is ambiguous, with it not being said whether the timeline is reversed and time works backwards, or whether literally everything is the opposite. Anyway, this is one of the most bizarre and mysterious worlds mentioned in Supernatural.

No yellow world

Clearly, as the god Chuck was getting bored and running out of ideas, he began to create increasingly strange and nonsensical worlds. One of them was simply a world where the color yellow does not exist. It’s unclear if he traversed the entire color spectrum and created multiple realities with different color scales, but there definitely exists a world without yellow.

2

The world where Sam and Dean become vampires

Jensen Ackles as vampire Dean in Supernatural

In a Supernatural spin-off world, Sam and Dean transform into monsters. This reality is seen in the background on TVs in “Galaxy Brain”. It is not shown how the brothers were transformed and whether they transformed more friends and family. But presumably, if the Winchesters were turned, they would be formidable creatures of the night.

1

Squirrel world

Apocalypse World Rift in Season 12 of Supernatural

Once again, Chuck proves how boring and mundane life has become for the eternal being when he created a world entirely populated by squirrels. Presumably he means squirrels like the ones that exist everywhere else, but if so, there are no predatory animals and it is simply a world with squirrels and plants. Honestly, out of all of Chuck’s creations, this seems like one of the most peaceful and fun to watch in all Supernatural.
