CBS’ Matlock series is a quasi-reboot of the original series starring Andy Griffith as Ben Matlock. Its premiere scored the most-watched non-Super Bowl premiere in five years, proving it could compete with the original, which is considered one of the best procedural TV shows ever. Ben used his folksy, unassuming demeanor to hide his sharp legal mind and wit in the original series. CBS returned the premise through Bates’ show but with a few significant twists. Her cause for justice in the pharmaceutical industry is for her daughter, who died of an opioid overdose.
