Star Trek: Section 31 – Release date and first teaser art revealed

Michelle Yeoh’s Phillipa Georgiou steps out of the shadows, ready to lead Starfleet’s dirty deeds in a bright and stunning new poster for Star Trek: Section 31along with confirmation of the release date. Leaving the events Star Trek: Discovery and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, Star Trek: Section 31 see the former emperor of the Mirror Universe Terran Empire joining the clandestine arm of Starfleet after her appearance in Season 3, ready to make amends for her past deeds. The film is expected to be released on Paramount+.

As Star Trek was moved to New York Comic-Con, the release date of Star Trek: Section 31 was finally revealed during the event along with a new poster. Paramount+ confirmed that the the film will be released on the streaming service on January 24, 2025, globally. The teaser poster is simple yet striking, as Georgiou is seen against a simple lime green background, with a purple hue helping her stand out even more. Georgiou is apparently dressed mostly in dark clothing perfect for covert operations, including a large coat.

While not much was revealed by the new teaser art, the poster offers a new glimpse at a costume that perfectly evokes the tone of the series. Georgiou’s uniform complements the spy thriller and noir genre while its lack of notable Starfleet iconography makes it perfect for Section 31’s dark deeds.

Meanwhile, the January release date is perfect for the upcoming slate of Star Trek releases. With Star Trek Lower Deck final season scheduled to end in December 2024 and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 returning at an unknown date in 2025, Section 31 will satisfy fans and fill the gap between releases.

With a long production journey that has seen the series reworked from series to film, many viewers are sure to breathe a sigh of relief now that the release date has been confirmed. With Star Trek: Discovery having concluded in May 2024, Georgiou’s fate is one of the few remaining plot threads left from the series.

Furthermore, Star Trek: Section 31 will also explore one of the most elusive and somewhat controversial elements of his Star Trek lore, showing a darker side to General Roddenberry’s idealistic on-screen future. As such, the film is sure to provide not only answers but also a new twist to Star Trek tradition.
