Kimberly’s departure from Power Rangers at the end of season 3 led to a controversial storyline in Power Rangers Zeowhich would be reconfigured decades after the original Pink Ranger left. Amy Jo Johnson left Mighty Morphin Power Rangers halfway through the third season, with David Yost’s Billy and Jason David Frank’s Tommy becoming the only two OG Rangers still on the team. Both Billy and Tommy remained on the show after the Zeo transitionalthough the first one was no longer a Power Ranger and eventually left as well.
While Zeo was adapting a different Super Sentai show – Ohranger instead of Zyuranger – it was still a sequence of Powerful Morphine. Most of the characters were the same as the original series’ final season, and the Rangers still went to school and attended the Youth Center. As such, some stories and character moments from MMPR were taken to Zeo. This includes Tommy and Kimberly’s relationship, which would have to be resolved eventually given that the original Pink Ranger was no longer on the team.

Kimberly told Tommy she had found someone else
Kimberly Hart left Zordon’s team in MMPR Season 3 to participate in a gymnastics competition and pursue other things in life besides being a Power Ranger. Kimberly wanted to focus on her career and find different purposes other than being a superhero, which was a very interesting and mature way to take the character out of the series. The original Pink Ranger transferred her powers to Kat and moved to Florida. Kat would remain the Pink Ranger in Zeoduring which Kimberly never appeared, but was recognized in the infamous episode “There’s No Business Like Snow Business.”

A Power Rangers Comic Recontextualized Kimberly’s Letter
Power Rangers breaking up Tommy and Kimberly was controversial, especially because of how it happened. It was a somewhat tragic ending for some viewers who had been following since the first season of the original. Power Rangers show. Tommy “replacing” Kimberly so quickly didn’t work out too well either, though Tommy and Kat made a great couple and became endgame.
Happily, Power Rangers retcons Kimberly’s letter in 2017 Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Pink #6. THE BOOM! Studios’ comic about Kimberly’s life after she left Angel Grove revealed that, even though the original Pink Ranger wrote that letter, she was lying about finding someone else. Kimberly decided not to be a Ranger anymore and felt it would be unfair to keep Tommy in a relationship where they would rarely see each other. Kimberly was too heartbroken to break up with Tommy, so she made up a lie that would make everything easier.
