2024 was an important year for Thorwith a series of important events that led him to leave the Avengers. Thor made this decision due to a serious problem with his powers which led him to be suspected of murder without being able to clear his name. However, he didn't leave Earth's Mightiest Heroes without godly muscles – before leaving, Thor asked a different god to officially join the team. The change is part of a much larger evolution in Thor's powers, which has seen him rise to true 'Allfather' status, like Odin before him.
The important change occurred Avengers #17 (by Jed MacKay, Ryan North, Javier Garrón, Valerio Schiti, Bryan Valenza and Cory Petit), with Sam Wilson's Captain America asking Storm to join their ranks. The mutant hero was undecided about the offer until he spoke to Thor, who revealed that he planned to leave, and asked him to ensure that “a God of Thunder still rides with the Avengers.”
Since then, Storm has actually taken Thor's place in the Avengers, while the God of Thunder's solo adventures continue with Al Ewing and Jan Bazaldua. Immortal Thor. So far, Storm has helped the Avengers fend off Superman-level villain Hyperion, and has already begun to bring the team into a much closer alliance with Cyclops' X-Men. Asking Storm to replace him was a smart move by Thor, whose powers were out of control when he was on Earth.
Storm and Thor have a long-standing bond, with the X-Men hero being one of the few individuals to be deemed worthy of Mjolnir.
Thor named Storm as his successor
The God of Thunder has a big problem operating on Earth
In recent editions of Immortal ThorThe Son of Odin clashed with the combined force of the Enchantress, Executioner, and Roxxon CEO Dario Agger, aka the Minotaur. The Enchantress used magic to create a false Thor responsible for Roxxon (aka Chad Hammer), while also clouding the real Thor's mind. Due to its magic, Thor becomes a clichéd action hero whenever he's on Midgard (aka Earth)robbing you of your ability to think creatively.
That's a big problem, because Thor recently unlocked All-Power – a divine ability that makes him an Odin-level creator god. However, All-Power is only accessible through the wisdom of the individual who uses it. Due to his lack of wisdom on Earth, Thor is unable to access his increased power levels and even becomes a liability. The Enchantress and the Executioner cleverly used this condition to frame Thor for the murder of Dario Agger, who – despite being resurrected shortly afterwards – is still believed dead by the public, killed by one of Thor's new mystical weapons, the ax known as ' Tormod the Sharp'. Edge.'
Storm's membership in the Avengers has already created a much stronger bond with Cyclops' X-Men, leading to a formal promise that Earth's Mightiest Heroes will support the mutant team.
Staying with the Avengers would involve them in this murder investigation, and Thor also knows that if he fights beyond the Avengers on Earth, he will be operating as a mindless parody of his true self, potentially creating even more problems. It's a shame, as Thor's wisdom has been the main focus of his appearance as of late. Avengers comics, for example, setting aside his pride and surrendering to Nightmare rather than forcing the team to fight the supernatural god. However, while it's a shame Thor couldn't stay with the team, he chose the perfect replacement.
Storm is only the third hero to join every major Marvel team
The Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four Trifecta
This isn't the first time Storm has joined the Avengers – she was recruited in 2011, but the Avengers vs X-Men The event meant that she barely appeared as a member of the team before leaving again. Her membership makes her only the third hero – after Spider-Man and Wolverine – to become a member of the Avengers, X-Men and Fantastic Four. Although Storm was originally described as a mutant with control over the weather, she discovered her connection to ancient magic and is worshiped as a goddess in parts of Africa, making her a true “Thunder God.”
It's no surprise that Thor would approve of Storm replacing him, given she is one of very few heroes to be judged worthy of Mjolnir. Just recently, Thor assembled an alliance of hammer-wielding heroes, with Storm joining Jane Foster and Loki to support Odinson against the Elder God Toranos.
Thor has also shown significant sympathy for the plight of mutants, especially since the X-Men are more hated and feared than ever. Storm's tenure with the Avengers has already seen them working more closely with the X-Men, with the two teams teaming up against Hyperion, and meeting for a baseball game in Avengers #21where Captain Marvel pledged to support Cyclops against the enemies of mutants.
Storm replacing Thor solidified his A-list status in Marvel comics, especially since it coincides with his own solo series from Murewa Ayodele and Lucas Werneck. It also built a new connection between the Avengers and the X-Men, who often don't see eye to eye. Hopefully, Thor can solve your various problems and return to Earth's Mightiest Heroes eventually – but not before fans have a chance to see Storm live like Avengers' new resident god.
Storm's adventures continue in Avengers volume 9available now from Marvel Comics.
