Someone was watching Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton) at the patch party in Landman episode 7, but the show didn't explicitly show who it was or what it meant for the future of the series. There are several different stories that unite the cast of Landman each other, and the various parts of the oil industry and Tommy's personal life often overlap. Landman Episode 7 began yet another crossover between Tommy's professional and personal life through the man who was watching him at the patch party, and it could easily be the deadliest yet.
Near the end of Landman episode 7, Tommy had to meet Ainsley (Michelle Randolph) at the patch party she went to. When he arrived, he had to take her new love interest, Ryder (Mitchell Slaggert), away from her and gave the quarterback a beating and a stern talking to. When leaving, however, Landman revealed that someone was watching Tommy with night vision binoculars, but it wasn't someone instantly recognizable. The fact that someone is keeping an eye on Tommy and his family will almost certainly be important to the rest of the story. Landman Season 1, so it's important to know who was watching him.
The cartel was watching Tommy in Landman episode 7
The cartel has its eyes on Tommy and his family
The person who was watching Tommy at the patch party was a member of the cartel he had been in trouble with all season. Previously on Landman episode 7, some cartel members visited Tommy on an oil rig, only to be chased away by Boss's (Mustafa Speaks) gangster thugs. The cartel clearly learned that they wouldn't be able to touch Tommy while he was at work, but his personal life is filled with far fewer armed oil workers. Tommy and his family are much more vulnerable outside the oil field, and the cartel now knows it.
Is the cartel planning to kill Tommy or attack his family?
There is no good reason for the cartel to be watching Tommy's family
It's safe to assume that the cartel isn't watching Tommy and his family for any benevolent reason. After the plane crash in Landman In episode 1, the cartel is chasing Tommy, looking for reimbursement – or retribution – for all the cocaine they burned on MTex land. Tommy, however, was not willing to negotiate with them. The cartel may be monitoring Tommy to find out when the best time would be to attack him and his family.. Eliminating Tommy would make it much easier to destroy MTex's property to get the oil company off the cartel's land.

It's important to note that the man who was watching Tommy at the patch party was already prepared within moments of Tommy's arrival, which he wouldn't have been able to do if he had been following Tommy. It appears he was actually watching Ainsley, not Tommy, and that the cartel could be planning to take Angela (Ali Larter) and Ainsley hostage – or worse – to make Tommy listen to their demands.. If the cartel eventually kidnaps Tommy's wife and daughter, there's no chance he'll value Monty's (Jon Hamm) profit margins over their lives, and he might as well give in to them.
The cartel story will likely be the end of Landman's first season
The Landman cartel story has been creating suspense all season
Whatever happens with Tommy and the cartel will likely be saved for the season finale. Landman. The show has been building tension between MTex and the cartel all season, and it seems perfectly poised to turn their fight into a season-ending spectacle. The end of Landman season one could see the cartel kidnap Angela and Ainsley or see Tommy rally some of his toughest bullies to take the fight to them. Seeing Tommy put his life on the line for his wife and daughter would be the perfect place to end the Norris family drama.
Bringing up the conflict with the cartel would also be the perfect way to fully bring together Tommy and Monty's stories. If the cartel becomes a big enough threat, Monty will no longer be able to count on Tommy to handle it alone. The cartel would be the perfect excuse to let Monty bring in the big guns and really flex his financial and business muscles. The cartel also doesn't seem like the kind of story that would be saved for Landman season 2, which seems like more evidence that things will come to a head at the end of Landman season 1.
