Some surprising letters from Pokemon Trading Card Game PocketMythical Island expansion are taking over the game's meta, surprising many players. Last week, Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket released its first new expansion, Mythical Island. The new set included several new cards that updated existing decks and formed the basis of new ones. But while everyone expected the Celebi ex/Serperior deck combo to become the new dominant deck, two different decks Mythical Island decks have surprisingly emerged as potential game-changers.
In a recent tournament organized by Pokémon TCG streamer Ursiiday with over 1,500 players, 13 players made it to the top 32 using a former Gyarados deck. Surprisingly, not a single former Celebi deck made it to the top. Additionally, the winning deck was built around Golem rather than a more popular option like Pikachu ex or Mewtwo ex. Considering so much focus was on Celebi's ex when Mythical Island it went out, no one expected the dominance of the former Gyarados or the Golem.
Why Golem and Gyarados Ex are dominating the Pokémon TCG Pocket
A key Pokémon card for both decks is Druddigon.
Gyarados ex has emerged as a powerhouse that deals 140 damage in a single turn, enough to hit most Pokémon in the metagame. When combined with Greninja (which can deal bench damage), players can beat literally any card in the game. Golem also shined as a one-point Pokémon card that can deal 100 damage and also eliminate most of the game's top meta threats with a single attack.
The key to both decks is the use of Druddigon, a Dragon-type Pokémon. As a basic Pokémon, Druddigon can be played on the first turn and used as a tent while building Gyarados ex or Golem. The key to Druddigon is its Rough Skin abilitywhich causes any Pokémon that attacks it while it is in the Active Spot to take 20 damage. Considering that Druddigon has 100 HP, it is difficult enough to survive two attacks from Pokémon like Pikachu ex and lower its HP to the point where Golem or Gyarados can KO them.
Our Take: An Unexpected Pokémon TCG Pocket Twist
A new, slower playstyle has gained prominence in the game
It's fantastic that players have already discovered some unexpected deck combinations in Pokémon TCG Pocket's new expansions. I expect we'll see more experimentation with cards that weren't used often in the game's early weeks, which could help push other decks unexpectedly to the front of the metagame.
Using Druddigon as an effective card can help inspire other intriguing and unconventional characters. Pokémon TCG Pocket decks in the coming weeks, especially for cards with high energy costs or other disadvantages.
