THE Virgin River showrunner confirms that a key character will not return in season 7. Virgin River is a Netflix romantic drama that began in 2019. The series has been well-liked by fans throughout its six completed seasons so far and has already been renewed for a 7th season. Virgin River features a main cast that includes Alexandra Breckenridge, Martin Henderson, Colin Lawrence, Tim Matheson, Benjamin Hollingsworth, Mark Ghanimé, Sarah Dugdale and Annette O'Toole. The sixth season was recently released on December 19th.
Talking to TV Line, Virgin River showrunner Patrick Sean Smith revealed that Ghanimé will not return for season 7.will not be a series regular in season 7.” The showrunner did not rule out the possibility of Ghanimé's character, Cameron, returning to the franchise in the future, expressing his reverence for the character and the actor. Check out Smith's full quote below:
“I love Mark, who plays Cameron, and I love the character Cameron. He will always be a part of the world, and I would love to see his character back, but he won't be a series regular in Season 7, unfortunately.”
What this means for Virgin River
Cameron was already being written
While this change may be disappointing to some Virgin River fans, the news isn't entirely surprising. Cameron joined the series during Virgin River Season 4, and served as a series regular that season and the following season. A threat to be checked out, he was a potential love interest for Mel, before later transitioning to being the object of Muriel's attention. Despite her regular appearances in seasons 4 and 5, Cameron only appeared in three episodes of Virgin River season 6. As such, it seemed like Ghanimé's character was already being written out of the series.
This was also evidenced by the way Cameron's storyline was handled at the beginning of Virgin River season 6. Cameron and Muriel's separation occurs between Virgin River season 5 and season 6, eliminating the character from the series. The series also seemed to provide closure for Cameron and an easy way to sit out the season. He is back with his ex, Michelle, and returns to tell Muriel that he is moving back to San Diego. This makes Cameron's storyline effectively over, even if Smith is open to bringing him back.
Our Take on Cameron's Virgin River Departure
Cameron's plot seems complete
Although Cameron was an attractive character in Virgin Riverit may be time for the series to focus on other important romances. The love triangles Cameron had with Mel and Muriel ran their course. The only way to bring Cameron back permanently in any way that makes sense would be to create another romance storyline or have him break up with Michelle again, which might seem tiring for the show at this point. That said, Smith didn't rule out the possibility of Ghanimé making some kind of cameo in Virgin River 7th season.
