Elden Ring Nightreign's lore makes no sense (and that's okay)

Although Elden Ring's Night Reign'The reveal trailer at The Game Awards left FromSoftware fans excited that more was being done with the IP later Shadow of the Erd TreeAfter the huge success of, there was a lot of confusion surrounding what was revealed. The trailer showed many interesting features, but it was not clear what Night Reign actually it isbeing a three-person co-op roguelite title, which many began comparing to Battle Royales as Fortnite due to the Ring of Kingship approaching as night approaches. What was even less clear was what was happening to the tradition.

The Soulsborne fanbase is loosely divided into two factions: one that only cares about combat, buildings, and bosses, and another that will delve into the lore, trying to explain everything as if they were scholars of ancient history. While the former are likely excited to see new gameplay elements, bosses, and better traversal, the latter may be pulling their hair out trying to make sense of the mess that Night Reign introduced. Your tradition doesn't seem to make much sense, and this is probably good for the type of game Night Reign will end up being.

Perhaps the kingdom of Limveld is some sort of pint-sized prison, and the Night Lord is trying to break free, but if that's the case, then Elden Ring must be linked Dark Souls somehow because of the appearances of the Fire Guardian and the Nameless King. As with all Soulsborne games, there are a lot of questions about what is actually going on, but due to the nature of the Night Reigngenre (being a roguelite), there may not be answers to search carefully, as in Elden Ring or the Dark Souls games.

From a lore perspective, there may not be a reason for the Nameless King to be in Limveld and how the Fire Guardian managed to escape his duties at Firelink Shrine. Even the Centipede Demon of Dark Souls 1 returns as a boss, albeit altered to suit three-player mechanics, and these returning elements seem to be thrown without explanation. These assets can be used to save time so FromSoftware can focus on co-op mechanics and new gameplay features rather than being evidence that their IP worlds are linked.

While Elden Ring was the culmination of everything FromSoftware learned from the Soulsborne games, Night Reign seems to take the scaffolding of the 2022 GOTY winner and use it to try to try something new. FromSoftware always does things its way, sometimes making strange choices like not allowing double runs Night Reign, and appears to be on the right path to creating something truly unique. It contains only a few ancient elements to allow the experiment to run smoothly, although this experiment may sacrifice the sense of tradition.

Why Night Reign was explicitly stated to be in a world separate from and parallel to the Elden Ring, this means that everything that happens in the game does not affect the canon that Miyazaki and George RR Martin established. Night Reignthe tradition of could go completely off the rails, which seems to happen in some places, and it wouldn't affect the intricate story seen in Elden Ring, giving developers the freedom to try new things while having the biggest gaming IP of 2022 as a platform. Ultimately, fans will still try to understand the story in Elden Ring Nightreignbut since the story is completely separate, it doesn't need to make sense to be what FromSoftware is striving to do. The game is an experiment. Bringing in old elements saves time, money and helps get the community talking about the project so they can get feedback. Separating it from the main story means that all the breaking of tradition doesn't really matter, and Elden Ring I could continue with a sequel without worry.
