Sonic the Hedgehog 3 arrived in theaters this weekend, decimating the box office, and the furry franchise is better than ever. This time, Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and his friends Knuckles (Idris Elba) and Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) make Dr. Robotnik (played by Jim Carrey despite his retirement from acting) an unlikely ally when Shadow (voiced by the fantastic Keanu Reeves) comes to Earth.
Sonic's dark counterpart isn't the only new addition to the franchise, as Jessica Jones' Krysten Ritter plays Director Rockwell of the Nations Guardian Units. James Marsden and Tika Sumpter reprise their roles as Tom and Maddie Wachowski, Sonic's adoptive parents, completing the full film. Sonic the Hedgehog family.
TelaRant interviewed O'Shaughnessey and Ritter about their roles in Sonic the Hedgehog 3with the former discussing what it was like to welcome Shadow on board, while the latter shared her own experience as the new kid in town.
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 through the eyes of a veteran vs. A newbie
“Quiet children’s films, that’s where it is.”
ScreenRant: First of all, Sonic 3 it's incredible. I love this film franchise. This is the perfect film to sit down and watch with the whole family. Colleen, as someone who has been a part of Sonic's world for years, what excites you most about Tails and Team Sonic's journey in part 3?
Colleen O'Shaughnessey: I'm so excited for him to be an integral part of the team now. He's the guy in the chair, like in Spider-Man. [Laughs] He's behind the scenes. He knows all things. He has the devices and is ready to help whenever they need him.
ScreenRant: Kristen, you're new to the Sonic franchise as Director Rockwell, who's a badass. What was it like entering a universe with this rich mythology and large fan base?
Krysten Ritter: It was so emotional. When you join a system that is already built, it may seem like you are the new kid in school, but it wasn't like that at all. I got there and I think the first thing Jeff said was, “Okay, we're taking a picture. We're all family here. Welcome to the family,” and that was the tone.
It was set from the beginning and it was very positive, very friendly, very warm and very calm. No one is shouting. It was incredible, and I thought, “Who knew?” Quiet children's films, that's where it is. It was the best. And working with Jim was like a dream come true for me.
Colleen O'Shaughnessey and Krysten Ritter react to the shadow in Sonic 3
“It’s a big challenge for them to try to save the universe once again.”
ScreenRant: Another new character we have in this film is Shadow. Colleen, how does Team Sonic feel about Shadow?
Colleen O'Shaughnessey: They don't know who he is or where he came from. He is very scary. He's the ultimate life form, and of course they have him kick Tails' ass immediately.
I saw someone put together a little thing of all the different iterations of Shadow kicking Tails' ass, and they said, “Why is he always kicking Tails?” [Laughs] But yeah, he's scary, and I think it's a big challenge for them to try to save the universe once again.
ScreenRant: What does Shadow's escape mean for GUN and Director Rockwell?
Krysten Ritter: Director Rockwell is not a big fan of aliens, she is very skeptical. She thinks they have a lot of freedom, but of course, Shadow means they have to recruit Team Sonic to come in and help. Without giving anything away, there is a little twist, but it's a really badass and cool character that I play.
ScreenRant: Colleen, Sonic 3 explores the themes of found family and decision-making. Can you talk about this topic during the film?
Colleen O'Shaughnessey: Yes, they've come together as a team, but they also have a family with Tom and Maddie, and it's such a beautiful thing. They have this kind of sibling rivalry, but I think it's a recurring theme throughout the whole movie because they have to figure out a way to stay a team and work together instead of everyone going out and trying to do stuff. on your own.
ScreenRant: Kristen, you talked about working with Jim Carrey, and we get a double dose of Jim in this film. What was your favorite moment working with Jim?
Krysten Ritter: Well, I have a really big scene with him where we're doing physical comedy, and that was one for the books, let me tell you. Doing big stunts like that, doing a physical comedy scene with the king of physical comedy was incredible. We were both very beat up and very sore and actually got massages after that. And being in the trenches with your comedy hero is just crazy; a great pinching moment. It was really important to me, to be honest.
