The origin of Star Trek: the name of the starship Anaximander from Lower Decks
Captain Boimler's ship is named after a real ancient philosopher
It is not uncommon for Star Trek ships that originated on Earth would be named after facets of real human history. For example, there have been several iterations of the USS Enterprise in Star Trekbut the name ended up being taken from an 18th century sea ship. “Fissure Quest” delves deeper into Earth's history to name Anaximanderwith Captain Boimler's ship inheriting the title of a very ancient philosopher who, according to Beautiful Salonwas born around 610 BC.
Many of his theories have since been proven wrong, but they were very impressive given Anaximander's primitive capabilities.
Anaximander is widely considered one of the founders of philosophy and science in the Western world.. He had some very interesting views about the shape of the Earth and how various bodies in the solar system interacted with each other. Many of his theories have since been proven wrong, but they were very impressive given Anaximander's primitive resources and lack of existing information. Very little of his work remains, but what has survived into the modern day is considered some of the oldest recorded ruminations on certain topics.
Why Star Trek: Lower Decks Is Called Captain Boimler's Section 31 Ship “The Anaximander”
The ship's namesake pondered a concept relevant to Section 31's mission
Anaximander's fundamental role in the evolution of human understanding makes his name a leading candidate when it comes to names that would be perfect for Star Trek ships. However, it actually goes much deeper than how important he was in general. One of the philosopher-scientist's most interesting theories was that the universe derives from something called “the aperion.” Today, the word can be roughly translated as something like “unlimited” or “unlimited.”
The concept of an infinite universe is perfect when looking for a title for Captain Boimler's ship. Section 31 likely named Anaximinder primarily for its namesake's thoughts on the aperionas Star TrekThe multiverse is also essentially endless – as far as anyone can prove. As Anaximander was assigned to monitor and investigate the portals between parallel realities, Star Trek: Lower DecksThe ship name selection is incredibly apt.
