Dragon Age has always been famous for its variety of companions and Dragon Age: The Veil Guard is no exception, with seven characters joining Rook on his quest to save Thedas. However, there were some familiar faces from previous titles that people were understandably hoping to see, either as companions or as cameos. While some of these absences make sense, there are others that feel like a missed opportunity.
[Warning: This article contains spoilers for Dragon Age: The Veilguard.]
Dragon Age: The Veil Guard has many cameos with a multitude of returning characters from previous games, books and comics. From previous companions like Morrigan and Dorian to expanded secondary characters like Harding, Evka and Antoine, The Veil Guard There are many pre-established characters from across the series to make the world feel more connected. However, there are some great characters that would fit well with the setting and plot that are sadly missing.

Velanna – Dalish Elven Mage
Appears in Dragon Age: Origins – Awakenings
Velanna is an often overlooked companion, which is a shame as she is a fantastically written character. Making his first and only appearance on Dragon Age: Origins DLC, AwakeningsVelanna may join the Gray Wardens after agreeing to work together with the Warden-Commander to find her missing sister. When she met, Velanna was at the lowest point in her life after leaving his clan, losing his sister, and committing multiple murders to avenge his fallen friends.
Velanna would have gotten along well with The Veil Guardis the plot of how she has ties to both the Gray Wardens and the Dalish, giving several ways she could have appeared. Its inclusion would have provided a fascinating perspective on the Evanurisparticularly Ghilan'nain's attack on Weisshaupt. It would have been nice to have Velanna as a temporary companion during the siege to hear her opinions and complaints about the situation.

Sigrun – Dwarf Rogue
Appears in Dragon Age: Origins – Awakenings
Another companion featured in Awakenings it was Sigrun, a casteless dwarf, who was Velanna's opposite in personality. While Velanna was moody and abrasive, Sigrun was upbeat and friendly with lots of funny banter. Sigrun was a member of the Legion of the Dead and after her battalion was killed by Darkspawn, she agreed to join the Gray Wardens to continue killing Darkspawn and finding the Architect.
Like Velanna, Sigrun could have worked perfectly in Weisshaupt as a cameo or temporary companion to guide Rook around the fortress. Sigrun could also have ties to Harding's personal quest which explores the lore of the dwarves, or even that of Davrin, which involves Guardians who set out to fulfill their calling. As the only dwarf companion until Harding in The Veil GuardIt would have been nice to have seen or even recognized Sigrun again in a Dragon Age game.
8
Shale – Golem Warrior
Appears in Dragon Age: Origins, The Stolen Throne and Asunder
Another former companion who could have provided interesting information about dwarven lore would have been Shale. Shale could be recruited in Origins with The Stone Prisoner DLC and was a huge stone golem with an intense hatred for birds. Through your personal quest, it will eventually be revealed that Shale was once a dwarf who volunteered to become a golem to defend the Thaig dwarves during the First Plague.
It would have been brilliant to meet Shale again and have her interact with Harding. Shale was last seen in the novel Separate, so there are many ways the golem could have been introduced to Rook, whether through the Inquisition or through the dwarves of Kal-Sharok. Never minced words, It would have been intriguing to hear Shale's thoughts on the Titans' fate.
7
Dagna – Blacksmith Dwarf
Appears in Dragon Age: Origins, Inquisition and Tevinter Nights
Dagna is a charming character who met for the first time in Origins when the group traveled to Orzammar, they wanted to be able to study magic on the surface. Even though dwarves don't have magic, Dagna wanted to learn more about it. and how it connects to lyrium. Dagna would later join the Inquisition as an enchantment specialist and began studying parts of the Adamant Fortress that had entered the Fade.
Dagna seems like an obvious choice for Harding to get in touch with when she gains a strange new magic with the lily dagger. How the Inquisition was dissolved at the time of The Guard of the Veil, there are a few ways Dagna could have appeared other than simply being friends with Harding. Her studies of the Fade naturally tie her well with Mourn Watch, while her mix of dwarven craftsmanship and magical knowledge would also make her a great fit for a Veil Jumper liaison.
6
Iron Bull – Qunari Warrior
Appears in Dragon Age: Inquisition
One of the best companions Dragon Age: Inquisition it was Iron Bull, the Qunari leader of the Chargers mercenary group. In addition to acting as an impressive tank for the Inquisitor, Iron Bull was also the Qunari contact for the Inquisitionacting as a liaison between the Ben-Hassrath network and Leliana. Depending on the choices made during InquisitionIron Bull could still be a member of the Qun or Tal-Vashoth during the events of Invader DLC, with an Iron Bull Ben-Hassrath being killed during a confrontation with the Qunari.
With the situation regarding Antaam in The Veil Guardbringing Iron Bull in to consult with the Antivan Ravens or the Lords of Fortune would have made a lot of sense. In some ways, Iron Bull makes more sense as a faction liaison than Isabela, although seeing the two work together would have been brilliant. Iron Bull and his right-hand man Krem could also have impacted Taash's character arc and also provided someone for them who is equally excited about dragons.
5
Anders – Human Wizard
Appears in Dragon Age: Origins – Awakenings and Dragon Age 2
A more controversial Dragon Age companion to include in The Veil Guard would have been Anders, last seen in Dragon Age 2. First appearing in Awakenings As a fugitive wizard, Anders was recruited by the Gray Wardens before fleeing after allowing his spiritual friend, Justice, to share his body. In Dragon Age 2, Anders becomes obsessed with the freedom of wizards, corrupting justice in Revengeand eventually blowing up Kirkwall Chapel.
Varric and Hawke can mention several destinations for Anders in Inquisitionbut everyone seems to suggest that he is alive unless he is killed directly at the end of Dragon Age 2. It would have been interesting to see Anders interact with Lucanisor Spite with Justice, and hear your opinion on Solas' goals. Another way for Anders to appear could have been through the Gray Wardens, official or otherwise, to help Rook in the Wetlands and offer Anders some form of redemption arc.
4
Cole – Human/Spirit Rogue
Appears in Dragon Age: Asunder & Inquisition
Another companion who would have been fascinating to see talk to Lucanis or Emmrich is Cole. Cole is a very peculiar character who straddles the line between human and spirit.as there was a human wizard named Cole who eventually became a spirit of Compassion after the original Cole's death. All over InquisitionCole learns more about being a person than a spirit, with the Inquisitor, Solas, and Varric able to help him choose between embracing his spiritual nature or becoming fully human.
Although there are two different paths for Cole in InquisitionThere would have been an easy way to introduce him to The Veil Guardstory, given its strange nature. With Cole's ties to the Fade, having him appear at the Crossroads makes more sensewith him acting as a guide to Solas' memories or opening new areas in the Caretaker's place. Plus, having Cole meet Manfred and Spite and participate in their pranks would have been worth putting him in the game on his own.
3
Merrill – Dalish Elven Mage
Appears in Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2
While some may not remember Velanna fondly, there was another fellow Dalish mage who is beloved by a large portion of fans: Dragon Age 2It's Merrill. Merrill was the naive blood mage desperate to fix an eluvian and recover the inheritance of his people throughout DA2three acts. Given the important role that eluvians play in The Guard of the Veil, it's a little strange that Merrill doesn't seem like an expert, although the obvious answer is that Bellara fills that role.
It seems like a missed opportunity to have a mentor/mentee relationship, and Bellara could have introduced Merrill as her teacher or at least a friend. Merrill's eluvian was also corrupted by Blight, so Having her involved with the corruption seen in Encruzilhada would also have made a lot of sense. However, it would not have been unreasonable to see Merrill acting as an ally of Solas, perhaps misguidedly, given his previous resolve to restore his people.
2
Fenris – Elven Warrior
Appears in Dragon Age 2, Blue Wraith and Dark Fortress
First appearing in Dragon Age 2Fenris was a runaway slave from Tevinter, covered in glowing lyrium tattoos, with extremely strong opinions about wizards and magic. Often butting heads with Anders, Fenris's journey was learning about your life before your marks and healing past trauma. In the comics Dragon Age: Blue Spectrum and Black FortressFenris is seen hunting slaves and learning to work as a team again as he helps free slaves and infiltrates Qunari strongholds.
In The Veil Guard, It would have made a lot of sense to have Fenris connected to the Shadow Dragonsalthough perhaps unwillingly. Perhaps he could have been a contact for them on a mission or their agent in Arlathan Forest to allow Fenris to reveal his thoughts on the Veil Jumpers. However, ex- Dragon Age main writer, David Gaiderexplained on BlueSky that Fenris requires a custom body model, making his return in any future games unlikely.
1
Zevran Arainai – Elvan Rogue
Appears in Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2
Finally, if there was an ex-partner, people were sure it would appear The Guard of the Veil, it was Zevran Arainai. First appearing in OriginsZevran was an Antivan Raven sent to assassinate the Warden and any remaining Gray Wardens on Fereldan, but ended up fighting alongside them. This angered the Crows as Zevran broke his contract and for years they sent assassins after him while he, in turn, tried to dismantle the Crows from within.
Given his ongoing conflict with the Crows, it is doubtful that Zevran could have joined Rook's team in Dragon Age: The Veil Guard without sacrificing Lucanis as a companion. However, Zevran could have provided an interesting perspective on the more sanitized version of the Crows seen in the gameopening up some dialogue about working with such a cruel organization. Unfortunately, fans of the charismatic elf will have to wait and see if he reappears in the future. Dragon Age content, along with all the others on this list.
