The 7 Biggest Changes Virgin River Season 6 Brings to the Books

Notice! SPOILERS for Virgin River season 6, episode 10 and the Virgin River books.

The main stories of Virgin River
Season 6 differs greatly from the books that inspired the Netflix romantic drama. The series of novels that the Netflix show is based on was written by Robyn Carr and includes 21 books, all set in the titular town of Virgin River. Although the Netflix show focuses on separate stories simultaneouslyCarr's books work differently, and Mel and Jack's story was at the center of only the first book, Virgin River. Mel and Jack do appear in other books in the series, but they are not the main focus.

The different pacing between the books and the Netflix series inevitably meant that some characters appeared longer, changing their storylines consistently. This was the case for many stories that are part of Virgin River Season 6, especially Mel and Jack, whose story continues to be told in the books, but their wedding is not shown because the book ends before that. Some characters' stories, like Brie, Brady, Mike, and Charmaine, change more than others', but Virgin River season 6 ends up giving them more depth finally because you spend more time with them.

The difference of opinion between Jack's parents regarding Jack's choice to join the Navy has been a heavy weight in the Virgin River. Mel and Jack's wedding, bringing the Sheridans to Virgin River, was the perfect occasion to discuss the matter, and Sam offered Jack to pay for his wedding tuxedo in Virgin River Season 6 Episode 5 made a conversation about Jack's service possible. All over Virgin RiverJack was always proud of this, despite the problems it caused him after returning home. However, Jack's parents didn't take kindly to his choice, and Sam's speech highlighted how he saw Jack's life as off track..

[Sam talking about Jack’s choice not to continue his education to serve in the Marines showed how] he didn't see Jack as a “highly decorated hero” like in the books.

Instead, Sam is most proud of Jack's trajectory in the book of the same name. While talking to Mel in Virgin RiverSam admits that Jack has accomplished more, saved more lives, and done more good than others in education, even though his choice to serve prevented him from continuing his education. Not going to college was a sore point Virgin River Season 6 too, but how Sam talked about Jack's sacrifice showed how he didn't necessarily see Jack as a “highly decorated hero”like in the books, instead seeing Jack's choice to join the Marines as a disturbing obstacle in the way.

Sarah and Everett were never in Robyn Carr's books

The focus on her past is an attempt to expand the Virgin River universe

Virgin River focused a lot on Mel's difficulty moving on after Mark's death, but her mother's death also had a huge impact on Mel in the Netflix romantic drama. Everett appearing and being revealed as Mel's biological father in Virgin River Season 5 only strengthened Mel's feelings about not remembering her mother Sarah before her illness, centering their mutual knowledge on her love for Sarah and who she was when Everett met her. This made flashbacks to younger versions of Everett and Sarah possiblealso paving the way for Virgin River spin-off of the prequel.

Everett's appearance in season 5 and Mel meeting him in Virgin River Season 6 partially shifted the focus from Mel and Jack to Everett and Sarah, making Mel's parentage more important in the Netflix TV show, even though it had never been as much in the books. Carr's Virgin River never focuses on Mel's parents, but it was important for the Netflix series to do so, as learning about Sarah's life made Mel feel much more connected to her motherto the point that their deeper knowledge briefly drove a wedge between Mel and Joey during the bachelorette party.

A fundamental characteristic of Virgin River books is how the protagonists of each are different. In fact, if Virgin River has the story of Mel and Jack at its center, the second book, Mountain Shelterfocuses on Preacher and Paige and so on. Although Mel and Jack continue to appear in several books after them, Mel and Jack are not the focus of the story in Virgin River books after the first. While each Virgin River season puts the spotlight on different couples, Mel and Jack are still at the center of the story, especially with their wedding in Virgin River 6th season.

This did Virgin River Season 6's focus on Mel and Jack continues to share a lot about both characters, particularly Jack's time when he chose to enlist and his first marriage. Mountain ShelterCarr's second book in Virgin River series, focuses on Paige and Preacher's romance, which in the Netflix series didn't have a chance to truly blossom, as Paige had to continue on the run for four seasons. This completely changed the plot of Preacher and changed the way its stories related to the main ones in the Virgin River TV program. In fact, with Paige leaving town in the Season 5 premiere and the spotlight on Mel and Jack's wedding in Virgin River 6th season, Paige and Preacher's storyline effectively ended well before Jack and Mel's wedding.

Always considered one of the best Virgin River novels, Preacher and Paige's story suffered from the change in timeline. While Preacher found love with Kaia in Virgin Riverhis and Paige's story couldn't be the iconic one it was in the books, as it focused on protecting Christopher and letting Paige remain safe while running away from Wes and Vince. Paige and Preacher meeting at Mountain Shelter When Mel and Jack already have their firstborn, it effectively changes the couple's entire dynamicas Paige and Preacher's story already ended when Mel and Jack got married on the show.

Virgin River Season 6 Has a Preacher on Trial When That Never Happened in the Books

Wes is not dead on Shelter Mountain, but in prison for what he did to Paige

A major storyline impacting Preacher in Virgin River season 6 was his trial. Although fortunately it ended in the Preacher's favor for Virgin River Season 6, Episode 3, the discovery of Wes' body in Season 5 during the cleanup of Virgin River by firefighters after the wildfires incriminated Preacher, as he disposed of his body to protect Paige in Virgin River season 2. This brought judgment into the lives of Preacher, Jack and Brie, something they had to face to know what it could mean if it didn't end well. However, The preacher is never judged in the books, because Wes doesn't die.

Mountain ShelterThe ending involves a confrontation between Jack's Marine unit, including Preacher, and Wes, after Wes kidnapped Paige. While in the commotion someone hits Wes and he falls, Wes never dies, only getting a blow to the head. The multiple witnesses and his capture ensure some accountability for what Wes did to Paige, with the disgraced cop ending up in prison, along with Paige and Christopher finally free of him. With Virgin River going in another direction for the story of Wes and his body being found, Preacher necessarily had to be tried, greatly changing its plot as a result.

Benjamin Hollingsworth as Brady and Zibby Allen as Brie in season 6 of Virgin River

Brie learning the truth behind Lark and Jimmy's relationship rekindled her connection with Brady in Virgin River Season 6, teasing the emotional exchange when Brie considered Brady “worthy of love” And the two connecting again. Their reconnection seemed inevitable after Brie discovered the truth about her undercover operation with Mike to stop Melissa's criminal empire and protect Brie from her, but that didn't change how Brie was still dating Mike. However, this never happens in Whispering Rockas Brady doesn't officially appear until the fifth Virgin River book, and he is never romantically linked to Brie.

The third Virgin River book Whispering Rock focuses on Brie and Mike's romance, just having the two romantically linked, and also changing the timeline of Brie's story. If Brie connected with Brady first after moving to Virgin River in Virgin River Season 3, she only does this with Mike in Whispering Rockafter a criminal attacks her and Mike helps her stay strong during the court case against the criminal, where Brie must testify. The different timeline makes Brie, Brady and Mike's connections a love triangle in the series that never existed in the books.

Charmaine's twins and issues with Calvin are not present in the books

Charmaine isn't pregnant, but her baby story mirrors that of another book character

Although Charmaine exists as a character in the Virgin River books, she doesn't have as impactful an influence as she does in the Netflix series. Charmaine's centrality in Virgin RiverThe six seasons highlighted the actual length of the show's timeline, as she was pregnant for most of it, making it impossible for Virgin River seasons 1 to 5 last over a year. However, Charmaine was not pregnant at the Virgin River books and consequently her custody battle with Calvin never happened in the book series.

While Charmaine herself was never pregnant in the books, one theory (via Reddit) suggests Charmaine and Jack's pregnancy story was actually mixed up with the fifth Virgin River history of the book focusing on Paul. Paul is in love with Vanni, the widow of a Marine in his unit, but is briefly led to believe that he has gotten Terri pregnant after their one-night stand, because Terri wants a family and she considers him a good man with whom to build one. Terri's subterfuge is eventually discovered, as is Charmaine's in Virgin Riverbut season 6 still changes the story of Charmaine's book a lot.

Virgin River season 6 is now streaming in full on Netflix.
