WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for The Agency episode 5.
Episode 5 of the Paramount+ political thriller series The Agency “Rat Trap” portrays Danny in hot water as Osman gets closer to the true identity of the “Paul Lewis” of Mars. Created for American television by Jez and John-Henry Butterworth (Edge of Tomorrow, Ford vs Ferrari), The Agency is an adaptation of the 2015 critically acclaimed French thriller series The Table created by Eric Rochant. Michael Fassbender leads the cast of The Agency alongside Jeffrey Wright, Richard Gere, Katherine Waterson, John Magaro, Saura Lightfoot-Leon and Jodie Turner-Smith.
Despite its promising source material and cast, The Agency received mixed reviews, resulting in a Rotten Tomatoes score of 67% following its two-episode premiere on November 29, 2024. The Agency episode 1 “The Bends” and episode 2 “Wooden Duck”, Fassbender's “Paul Lewis” is pulled from a six-year undercover mission to help locate a missing Belarusian CIA agent named Coyote. The Agency Episode 3, “Hawk from a Handsaw”, followed three agents disguised as “Felix” trying to escape Russian-occupied Ukraine. Marciano meets a KGB agent named Mikhail in The Agency episode 4 “Quarterback Blitz” which helps the CIA find his missing “bike” in episode 5.
How Martian and Henry discover that Coyote is leaking information
Coyote revealed one of its dead drop locations in Belarus
In The Agency episode 5, Martian and Henry finally discover that their missing Belarus agent, Coyote, is leaking information. They discover this because they ask Owen, Coyote's main point of contact, about a Belarusian address “31 Ulitsa Bratskay”, which Owen confirms is one of their “dead warehouse” locations where they previously transmitted information and transferred items in secret. As Martian and Henry manage to discover this address in the search for Coyote, they verify that the address has been compromised, since Owen and Coyote were the only two people who knew about this previously.
As Owen was already at Coyote's apartment in Belarus looking for clues when the CIA realized that Coyote was talking, Bosko informed Owen that he was not safe there. Owen panics and immediately suspects that the woman who randomly appeared in the apartment, an associate of Coyote cover “Piotr Rybak”, is not who she says she is. Bosko begins an immediate intervention and has the “laundry” arrive at the apartment after Owen finds Coyote's gun and locks the woman in a closet. It turns out that Owen didn't need to panic and the woman was innocent, which Marciano criticizes him for returning to London.
Who Is Edward and Danny's CIA Interrogation Test Explained
Marciano used Edward to test Danny's resolve
After Danny's uncomfortable scene with Professor Rez, who tries to attack his young student just days after meeting her, she is called into Rez's office. Rez apologizes for his conduct and asks Danny not to escalate the matter, which Danny agrees to in order to maintain closeness with him. At the exit, she is kidnapped by two apparently British agents, potentially MI5who tie her to a chair in an abandoned place.
A man, who appears to work for British intelligence, abuses and interrogates Danny to see if she will discover his secret identity. It turns out that the man's name is Edward and he is a CIA agent just like her. Noami and Martian instruct Edward to test Danny as if she had actually been kidnapped and questioned by an opposing threat. Danny stands firm after days of physical and psychological torture and Marciano gives her a B+ passing grade for maintaining her resolve. Danny then develops a romantic interest in Edward.
What Owen Discovered in Coyote's Minsk Apartment
Coyote may have been discovered by his secret psychiatrist
Owen is not a field agent and has not been properly trained in disguise, which is why he assumes his true identity in Coyote's apartment in Belarus. He claims to be Piotr's friend and does not expect the situation to become potentially dangerous, even if it does. Before Owen is extracted by the “laundromat”, he discovers that Coyote has been taking medications prescribed by a psychiatrist, which the CIA was unaware of. Martian calls Coyote's secret psychiatrist a “hole in the boat” and will likely be a new lead in the future. Marciano will probably try to identify that psychiatrist in The Agency episode 6.
Who wrote Valhalla in Coyote's shower?
Can you suggest who exposed Coyote in the first place?
The biggest unanswered question by the end of The Agency episode 5 is who wrote Valhalla inside Coyote's shower. Interestingly, when Owen first arrives at Coyote's apartment, he notices that someone has used the shower recently. He discovers “Valhalla” when he tries to mask his voice on the phone with the CIA by taking a hot shower. Owen doesn't think the random visitor knows anything about Valhalla, so they quickly erase her from the scene.
Given the known significance of Valhalla, this could imply that Coyote was killed. What's more likely, though, is that Valhalla is a code for something else, perhaps its own secret mission, and is another sign that Coyote is revealing secrets. Based on Marciano's own situation with Sami and the CIA psychologist's previous statement about love being one of the main motivations that transform field agents, Coyote could have revealed himself to an apparent loverhence the writing in the shower, which turned out to be an opposite intelligence.
The Burner Phone in Kebab Dead Drop Spot Explained
Simon finds hidden information in an event dated 2023
A message is sent to the phone connected to Mikhail referring to someone selling a “much loved bicycle.” This is a code for Coyote and proof that the KGB agent knows Coyote's whereabouts. It appears that Mikhail transmits the information about “31 Ulitsa Bratskay”, which reveals that the drop-off location has been compromised. A CIA agent named “Grandpa” recovers a white phone from the kebab shop and brings him back to London.
Simon discovers an event on the white phone marked for Wednesday, April 26, 2023, which says “8am, Locker 145, Code 66848, Goswell Road Estate.” The date is either intentionally inaccurate and is for the next day or is an old phone that reveals Coyote's last known location. This will likely be clarified in episode 6 and should involve Marciano giving the orders or arriving at the designated location. Whatever, It looks like someone close to Coyote is willing to talkwhich could finally explain what happened to Coyote.
How Osman Destroyed Paul Lewis's Cover
Paul never reported the robbery to the police
In addition to all of the Coyote developments and Danny's intense training, Martian is dealing with his own private dilemma as his relationship with Sami is causing huge problems for him that the CIA is completely unaware of at this point. Osman and one of his men track down “Paul Lewis”, who is temporarily staying at a hotel with Sami. The man knocks Paul, who is trained to be assaulted like a civilian.
Despite his convincing performance, Paul does not report the crime to the police, which makes Osman believe that he is not simply a teacher and aspiring novelist as he says he is. Osman tries to figure out how to eliminate Paul at the end of The Agency episode 5, as Marciano gets closer to finding out what exactly Sami and Osman are doing in Lodnon, in a building owned by a Chinese billionaire.
